Time is Running Out, Better Clear That Pile

Pages

We're getting to that time of year when new releases (and consoles this year too) are imminent. The time and energy required to play an older game lose out to the lure of the new. Let's try to make these last two pile threads count as we finish out 2013.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

The month's Pick of the Pile is

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

IMAGE(http://bestgamewallpapers.com/files/zelda-ocarina-of-time/bow.jpg)

"The game opens as the fairy Navi awakens Link from a nightmare, in which Link witnesses a stormy night where a man in black armor on horseback chases after a girl on a white horse. Navi brings Link to the guardian of Link's village, the Great Deku Tree, who is cursed and near death. Link breaks the curse, but cannot stop the tree from withering. The Deku Tree tells Link a "wicked man of the desert" has cursed him and seeks to conquer the land of Hyrule and that Link must stop him. Before dying, the Great Deku Tree gives Link the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, the Kokiri's Emerald, and sends him to Hyrule Castle to speak with the "princess of destiny." As Link is leaving, his close friend Saria bids him good luck and gives him the Fairy Ocarina, a precursor to the Ocarina of Time." (wikipedia.org)

Ooh first post!!

Keeping it light since Rome 2 will likely eat my soul in a few days.

PC

Bastion
Mark of the Ninja
Guild Wars 2

Small month for me: Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (PC) only.

This September I have to finish The Witcher (PC) and The Witcher 2 (PC) . I just know that for every minute I spend reading articles about The Witcher 3 with those two still on my pile, an Eastern European game developer sheds a tear.

Perhaps this will be the catalyst I need to devour the pile -- right? Right?! Sure!

PC
The Swapper
Antichamber

Wii
Skyward Sword

Let's start with that. Now, to dig out my old backloggery login info...

Let's go with Zelda games and Zelda-like games:

 • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Multi)
 • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Multi)
 • Pandora's Tower (Wii)

I'm clearing out my iPad of games, so I am going to list a few in here later.

If you're going with Zelda-likes, you should give Darksiders a go...

I've been doing my own year-long project regarding finishing games, so I haven't been in a pile thread. But this one's been bothering me.

Darksiders 2 (360)

It's one of those games I was really anticipating, paid full price for, and then got shoved to the side because something else grabbed my attention hard around the same time (The Last Story, my GOTY for 2012).

I've finished at least four games every month this year, and this'll be one of the four for September.

Oh yeah? Is it any good?

Well, getting ambitious in quantity this month. Carrying over Infamous 2 (PS3) and adding the following:

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Shadow (NDS)
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (NDS)
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (NDS)
Infamous Festival of Blood (PS3)
Guacamelee (PS3)
Night of the Rabbit (PC)

Yup! Gotta make room for the games that will inevitably come at around and after Thanksgiving.

My commitments so far will be:
Azkend 2: The World Beneath (multi)
Scurvy Scallywags (iOS)

I'm going to carry over COD:BLOPS2. I'll probably add some more.

Gonna carry over Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 1 (Multi), even though I still haven't gone back to it... Not sure I'll declare anything else just yet, because gaming time has been severely curtailed due to extreme exhaustion. Seriously, I haven't even played Guild Wars 2 in four days!!

I'm going to have another stab at getting through Assassin's Creed 3 (multi). Hopefully I'll be able to just mainline the more interesting story stuff and ignore most of the filler content this time around.

My goodness, whatever could be draining your energy...

Put me down for King's Quest 1 (PC). I turn 30 at the end of the month so the prospect of playing a 30 year old game seems amusing.

Antichamber is dunzo. The system works!

Also, my brain is fried. Maybe not the wisest choice to start my Labor Day.

Carrying over:

PC
Unreal - on mission 30 of 38
Unreal: Return to Na Pali

SNES
Illusion of Gaia

Hopefully I'll have a decent month of progress for a change.

The great thing about those old games is that they're short. Pretty sure I could wrap KQ1 under 45 minutes. Perhaps 30. What version are you playing, the original 1983-87 AGI version? Or the 1990 SCI remake? Or perhaps Tierra's 2001 fan remake?

Also, fellow 1983 baby, high five!!

You both made me feel very old all of a sudden.

Bah, it's all in your head, you're the youngest one of us all! IMAGE(http://siona512.free.fr/Smileys/smac.gif)

Question: can I still declare Game Dev Tycoon even though I already beat it when I got it DRM free? It just activated on Steam last week, and I've been playing it again to unlock what achievements I can... Don't want you guys to think I'm slacking or anything.

AGI version. I have a morbid curiosity to try and play through the Sierra's adventure games in order of release since I bought the KQ and SQ collections on Steam a while back and most of their catalog is now legally available on GOG. I'm going to try and stumble my way through them without a walkthrough, and if I need one I'm reaching for the old hint books that were uploaded to Sierra Gamers for maximum old school.

I'm half tempted to fish around on eBay for physical versions of the collection just because of some of the horror stories I've heard about how Vivendi/Activision "preserved" the games. I have a little bit of regret not getting the collections back when Sierra first started issuing them.

All righty, let's see what I can come up with this month....

XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Multi)
Sleeping Dogs (Multi)

You know, Clock...I think I'll join you in the Legend of Zelda pile:

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Multi)

I'm dropping Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 1. The game isn't all that great, and I've had my fill of Penny Arcade debacles.
I am tackling The Civ 5 DLC Gods and Kings, so that's a plus!

Alright, after nearly 2 months of no progress on paper, I'm going for these:
Torchlight 2 (PC) - Nearly done with Act 3, I think
Vanquish (Multi / PS3) Started playing despite not really enjoying the demo. Actually having fun with it now that I've eased into the game.
Mega Man 9 (Multi / Wii) Third time declaring it is the charm, right?

I might be jumping on ICO when it drops as a PS+ freebie.

Down goes Infamous 2... save for the game bugging out twice during the final mission (seriously SuckerPunch!?) on the same exact spot, third time was the charm, though it is truly exasperating. It wasn't cool having to see the story bits three times without the ability to skip them. A rather unforgivable faux-pas in this generation of games, really.

Reading up around the web this is a terribly common bug and, to be honest, someone at the developer should be proverbially shot in the foot for it, because it completely destroyed what enjoyment I had with the game up to that point. Terrible job of it.

Sorry to hear about that. I never saw that problem and enjoyed the game enough to go and collect everything. I basically did everything you can do and track for the good ending.

I failed in my quest to complete it last month(though I am close), so I'll re-up for Far Cry 3.

Other than that, I rather doubt I will get into anything else this month that I can actually complete. Civ V, Prison Architect, Kerbal, and Don't Starve are all asking for attention, and the baby that is supposed to show up mid-month is going put a major hurt on, well, everything.

Well, it looks like I had less to wrap up in both of those titles.

Azkend 2, completed, through chapter 17. A guilty pleasure, combining match three gameplay with bonus 'find this item' chapter mini-games.

Scurvy Scallawags, completely wrung dry. Pirate captain defeated, all Sea Shanties collected, all pirate costumes found and unlocked, all ships created, all side quests completed. Good fun.

F*ck it, throw another Ocarina on the Barbie for me too, and I'll also add in Batman Arkham City (multi). I'll make a second run at this title, ahead of the new title hitting in October, and now armed with the non-Metroidvania mindset (ie, you've actually got all your gadgets from the getgo). I missed a lot last time because I thought I was 'yet to get'.

I'm taking another swing at SR3. I dropped it down to casual and so far I'm enjoying it way more than the previous 3 attempts.
