IX had a weapon you could only find if you were semi-speedrunning the game.
Interesting, I looked that up and it's Steiner's ultimate weapon. Worse yet, it's all-but only obtainable in the US and JPN versions of the game, since the PAL version runs at a lower framerate it's nigh-impossible to get to the item in under 12 hours. It's completely impossible in the PSN version of the game, since you can't skip cutscenes. I stand corrected then, there's at least 1 item harder to get without prior information than the Zodiac Spear.
Think he's talking about 12 for HD. Since X is getting an HD version, and if it sells well, XII is supposed to follow.
Yup.
That said, I'm sad we haven't gotten remakes of 5 and 6 on the DS/3DS like how we did for 4.

Matrix was busy with Bravely Default and 4 Heroes of Light I believe.
No, as obsessively as I played FFXII, I don't recall any in-game hints that you were supposed to not open those particular four treasure boxes.
The Zodiac Spear mess is a frustrating ding against an otherwise incredible game.
Zodiac Spear aside, I will jump on an FF12 HD remake day 1, same way I am going to be playing X and X-2 HD on day 1. I don't know yet if I'll double-dip for both PS3 and Vita, but I sure am tempted.
To be fair, the Zodiac Spear is available in the game even if you accidentally picked up a no-no treasure. Its just in a place you can't get to for a long time. And in my case, it might have been a better idea. I got it WAY too early by process of corpse jumping around lvl 20 and it kind of broke the game for me. I ended up not equipping it until I got to a really hard boss.

And in a rare chest. And is a rare spawn in that rare chest. It's a 0.1% chance to get it that way, which is equivalent to farming top tier gear in an MMO. Not exactly what I'd call fun.

Ditto that; I've had the X/X2 remake preordered for the PS3 since they showed up on Amazon.

As soon as they get their pricing/dating sorted out for the Vita, they're getting marked in my calendar
(I'd expect it to be announced at TGS next month)

Since it didn't happen at Gamescom, I'm hoping for a FFVI iOS release date then as well.

Personally, I'm fine if they never touch 6. I really didn't care for the art style in the DS remake of 4.

I don't disagree with you there. I would like a remake, but not the same style as 4. Perhaps make the characters scale more realistic, like FF12. The short dumpy look is fine for a few games, but I don't think I would like to see that in 6.
If 6 gets any kind of touch-up, it'll be along the lines of the iOS version of 5: smoothed out graphics and some new character portraits.
FF6 with the Ducktales Remastered treatment would be awesome. They can use the FF6 orchestra album for the soundtrack. Aw yeah.
Let them lie. FFVI was wonderful, but I'd much rather see the development effort go into new games, or getting FFXII up on modern consoles, since it's the last mainline FF that can't be played on them.

I don't need a remake, but I would like the ability to play it on a mobile device I own.

Honestly I'm ok with this too.
However, part of why I'm eager for remakes of the old games is because the FFXIII series and what we've seen of FFXV don't hit the same gameplay and thematic notes for me that the games I most love in the series did. It would be nice to get a classic turn-based (or ATB at worst) FF game with a more fantasy feel like the old games, or IX or XII.

I feel like there's a huge nostalgia market on Kickstarter (Project Phoenix, etc..) that's out there to scratch that itch. Square aren't the right people to do that any longer, though.
I want to see Square-Enix take a shot in the dark and make a JRPG that's not a Final Fantasy game. That's part of why I'm so excited for Bravely Default.

Have you tried Dimensions on iOS or Android? It looks and feels like a 16-bit Final Fantasy game.

I need a decent iOS or Android device first; playing games on my phone isn't my preferred method.
Fortunately there's still that style of game around from places like Zeboyd games and the like. But there was something special about the FF games; from the familiar icons, to the Crystal theme and FF theme, to the traditional class names and designs that often got worked in, to recurring cast members like Cid, Biggs & Wedge, moogles, chocobos, and the good old FF monster roster.
And frankly, a lot of it was the way that Sakaguchi and Uematsu seemed to meld the music and the game so well. Some of that magic was still there with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, but it still wasn't quite the same.
I was surprised (pleasantly!) at how well FFXII managed to recapture that magic of the classic FF's for me, from the music to the game systems and art direction, to the nice big ensemble cast (despite how blase Vaan and Penelo were).
I think this is a significant part of why I didn't enjoy FFXIII as much; it just felt far more different than any FF before it (and some of them, like VIII and X, were fairly big departures from the classics, but still felt close enough to count) and managed to be just too different for me to connect it to the franchise.
I'm fine with them having plenty of experimental games, but it would just be nice if they could throw a bone to their long-term nostalgic fans, much the way that IX was thrown to us after how different VII and VIII were.

While I understand this perspective I find myself wanting more of the old (while still developing original ideas). The new just (at least in my perspective) isn't up to snuff when compared to classics such as VI. And in regards to HD remakes and straight ports, we've seen a plethora of these over the years and I've owned FFVI in it's original form on at least three different systems and beatin' it numerous times on each. I'd like a new perspective of the old games, new engine, updated mechanics, new quests, enemies and items. It's gotta happen

There are emulators that work wonderfully on phones.

Why we don't have a sequel to TWEWY is baffling. Also, do Star Ocean and Last Remnant count?

I was actually thinking about picking up Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Any reason why I should not?
You will get mixed opinions on that game, I personally like it and playing it right now about half way thru it. English voice overs are poor for some characters and save points are very spread out, but its still enjoyable game for me. I think if you are a fan of the series you would enjoy it, if your not you probably won't like it as much.
I'm one of those that will tell you to stay away. The combat is fun enough, but the characters are absolutely horrible, not a single one of them is redeemable, the story is completely batsh*t stupid, by the halfway point I wanted the bad guys to win simply because I hated the protagonists so much, and the dungeons are over-long uninspired boring spaghetti plates of a mess.
Considering how much time you spend out of combat in that game, and it is a long, long game, I cannot ever recommend it. There may be worse games that released this generation, but at least Rogue Warrior had the decency to be less than ten hours.
This is nothing to say of how long it takes to fight the final boss, and I ended up dying almost all the way through it.
My roommates and neighbor in College really got a schadenfreudian kick out of watching me play that game.

True, but virtual sticks and buttons are the pits
