You're the president? You're fighting against aliens?

I doubt I'll have sunk significant enough time into SR3 by August, but I'm down, just maybe not at launch. Maybe this will encourage me to finish SR3?

I'm sorry to hear you're so sick. Maybe you should go home and play some SR3 right now.

The trailer didn't sell me, but the description did.

Sorry to hear it.

I put in almost 70 hours, including 3 DLCs.

There is no doubt in my mind that SR4 will not be as good as SR3. I am still SO IN.

If you're the president, do the police still get mad at you? Do you still need to take over turf? Do you get a flying robot?

Maybe you only get a mech if you're the second President?

Arise! I bought this during the Steam summer sale and can't stop playing. I think it cured me of my months-long gaming ennui. This game is so good/fun/ridiculous/outrageous.

I love hearing when new people can discover Saints Row 3. I've said it many times but it continues to be true that it is one of the most purely fun experiences I've had gaming.

This thread made me buy it because I was bored at work browsing random threads... best gaming peer pressure ever!

It went on a ridiculous sale in the wee hours of the last Steam Sale so I bought it. I had no idea a sandbox / criminal game could be so much fun.

I smile for everyone who gives it a tentative try and ends up infatuated with it. This game is something special.

So say we all.

This game is crazy fun. Even when I'm not crashing vehicles into stuff or shooting down helicopters, I'm just walking down the street, bumping into pedestrians and taking their money while insulting them.

Need I remind you of this?

It's about half way through our interview, one in which Rubin talks bluntly about past mistakes of THQ, of the problems he foresees for the company, of the challenges he and THQ face, that I broach the subject of Saints Row the Third.

I haven't played the game, I confess to Rubin, because I wouldn't want to be caught playing it by my wife or my son. It would be embarrassing.

While most reviews for the game were positive, Edge Magazine seems to have felt the same way when they gave the game a relatively low score in their review, calling the title a "fratboyish endorsement of crime and female degradation, devoid of any conscience or commentary."

Saints Row the Third isn't a bad game, but it's not the sort I'd want to play, I tell Rubin. Then I ask him if he thinks that's an issue.

"That's why I am here," he said, after saying he wants more from Volition, "because of what you just said."

To be clear, Rubin isn't saying there isn't any room in his company "for a game that features a purple dildo," in fact he points out there are now two such games (the other is South Park: The Stick of Truth). But that sensibility isn't always a good fit for a studio.

"It works for South Park, but I'm not sure it does elsewhere," he said. "I don't think (Volition) chose to do what they did because they had all of the options available to them. It was the environment at the time.

"I know I can change that."

It may be old and not in the hands of THQ anymore but it still scares me.

That was scary at the time, but not any more. There's an anal probe in 4!

Weren't Volition saying that Deep Silver was a good match for them?

Yes, but I don't have a poem for that.

At first I was like wat

It was totally unintentional, and I didn't see it until after I posted.

The meter leaves something to be desired, to be honest.

I had forgotten about that interview. What saddens me in hindsight is that, apparently, EDGE was unable to distinguish the tone of SR 1 from SR 3. Completely different things.

This one is still sitting in my Steam queue. Any suggestions regarding whether I should play it with a controller or mouse & keyboard? I tend to go M&K by default, but it seems like a controller may work better for the driving parts. And from the bit I've played so far, shooting precisely doesn't seem to be terribly important.

I've updated the OP.

I think Saints Row is a great example of "console/controller game on your PC."

It's very easy to switch between controller and k/m. You don't need to pause or anything. That's how I've been playing SR4.

As noted, outside of two challenges, the game doesn't really require precise shooting, unless you're going into like the hardmode, where headshots become pretty important for like the first half of the game or so... so whatever is most comfortable is what I would suggest. If you'd prefer controller, you'll be just fine. If you would prefer M+K, that'll work just fine too.

Take this game out of your queue and play it. Saints Row The Third was the singly most fun game I have ever played. Still waiting to see whether IV will have a chance to top it, but it'll be tough.

Man, do I ever hope he's right. I haven't dared to hope nearly so high.

I played the whole thing on a controller and it was just fine. The gameplay is more about the power trip than any kind of challenge.

I spent a few hours playing last night and only switched from controller to mouse for the few story sections where I got mobbed by like 20 guys. I'm not much of a controller person, so my aiming ability is pretty poor, or at least slow.

The game is super fun. It takes the GTA model in a direction I actually like, and while I didn't really know what was going on from a story perspective, I also didn't care. I think I may jump into SR4 right now though, while there's a community of people doing multi. It saddens the completionist in me, but I'd rather get the full experience from one game than single only from both.
