Oh, Detroit.

So is that King Gorilla's new hobby?

Obviously Detroit needs some better cops. Maybe some sort of robot cop.

I am too smart to be a cop.

I wouldn't really trust a complete robot cop. What if it has a glitch and shoots me even after I give up? Crazy, I know. But still, I'd want some sort of human conscience controlling the robot.

I don't know, I think I'd trust a robot cop over an actual cop. For a robot cop to give you problems requires it to malfunction, whereas a human cop just needs to be greedy/irresponsible/power-tripping or even just having a bad day.

Please, in the name of all that is holy, give me a cop that can keep it's testimony consistent over the course of a month. It can be a parrot for all I care. Unless I end up back in defense work, then please let us keep our flawed but moral sensed human officers and let us not remove the very important human sense of right/wrong so necessary to policing.

Cancer doctor gave needless chemo in $35M fraud, prosecutors say

Every time I think I've seen the biggest asshole someone manages to beat them out, in this case "Dr." Farid Fata takes it.

Medical licenses can be revoked down there right?

Oh yes they can! He should get jail time, as well as a round of chemo.

Oshawa family receives hate-filled letter directed at autistic son

You may want to skip reading the letter, it's extremely vile. I hope they're able to track down who left it and do.. whatever it is that can be done in these sorts of cases.

This case will require very careful scrutiny of the timing. If you tell me that an old man is having a heart attack in his house, I have an exigency to enter until I know any differently. The medic alert pendant is to tell me that you need help but cannot get yourself to an ER, right?

So kicking the door in is fine, in my opinion. There is probably (based on my experience) a delay of a minute or two before information reaches the police from the caller, and when they tell me that getting somebody a defibrillator a minute or two sooner can prevent death, you might need a new door lock, but I won't be sad if you live. EMTs aren't in the business of kicking in doors, you see. At least not where I live. If they need that kind of access, we get called.

So I can see it being reasonable up to that point. But the old man has now been telling the Life Alert people that he is fine for a couple minutes, and doesn't want anybody in the house. He doesn't understand why the cops are now kicking in his door, so he arms himself. That is a terrible idea, but I understand why a combat veteran would revert to this behavior, and attack the cops, even though it will have awful consequences.

I think that the cops in that case would be commended for trying two separate less-lethal methods before resorting to deadly force. If they were in retreat (as the article stated) and he pursued them with the knife, I think that eventually it comes down to that. PS - Tasers are so worthless I don't even carry one anymore - they fail more often than they work in my experience.

So - up to all that, I can see this all being totally reasonable, even though it would be super f***ing tragic. A confused elderly man with a strong fighting streak and sense of independence doesn't understand why some good cops (that were told that he was having a heart attack) are busting into his house.

The problem I have isn't even with the audio. I'd need to hear it to decide what they were saying.

My problem is that at least one of the cops involved is already being sued for a racially motivated police brutality case that happened in 2008, where the plaintiffs were beaten very badly, and called multiple racial slurs. So, one - I'd sure like to know what the IA revealed in that department. In my department, I'm TERRIFIED to even give a black kid a ticket, because they have leverage to go to the top of our department and - in mid F***ING CALL SOMETIMES - complain about us. People have been on multi-week "admin leave" while my department tried to pin them to the wall for absolutely unfounded complaints because the department would rather discipline an officer than tell a minority that they had nothing to complain about.

So if they accused me of beating some of our Arabic students with a baton while they were handcuffed and calling them any type of slur in the process, I probably wouldn't ever come back from admin leave. I'd be gone. Looooong gone. I honest to God hate pulling over black people (and really, you usually can't tell until you walk up, especially at night) - or any other minority group - because their capacity to make me miserable as a result of entirely legitimate police activity vastly exceeds my capacity to deal with it.

I don't know why big cities tolerate these sh**y unionized police departments. They lead to cases like this, where a problem officer cannot be disciplined or removed from duty. Hell, I know cops who have gotten letters of reprimand for accidentally quoting a sentence (that the COP yelled!) in the wrong order in their report. As in, "Police! Don't move!" being accidentally quoted as "Don't move! Police!" And the cop got a letter for being dishonest.

As much as I feel frustrated by that, it's better than the East Coast style departments where the cops feel invincible, part of a gigantic union that spends 3% of their paychecks making it harder and harder to terminate them.

Gah.

Bit late I realize, but I saw an update to this where the autopsy showed that at the time he was shot his arms were at his sides and was probably not attacking them with the knife as claimed. No criminal charges on the officers even with this knowledge. so odd.

I saw snippets of the letter in the article I read about it. While whomever wrote it should be tarred and feathered, I'm torn as to whether there should be legal/criminal consequences. I'm thinking that community shaming should be enough.

That someone would write that filth and at the same time be cowardly enough to not sign it says that they are simply trolls.

I'm close enough to Oshawa that I can drive there to euthanize someone.
It won't be a child suffering from autism.

That was my wife's reaction too. I feel like she needs education before anything—at the very least for her writing. But also for, you know, empathy and respect and being a decent civilized human.

I definitely respect the family's reaction, though my first impression was that the letter is so pathetic it's laughable. That said, I wouldn't oppose criminal charges, on top of a (figurative) public slap in the face for that woman.

What makes me really sad is that she calls herself a mother. Is this what she passes on to her child(ren)?

Two teens decide to eat a human liver, steal a car, flee a car accident, and burgle a house.

Said liver belongs to the mom of one of the teens. The car belongs to the other teen's dad. Apparently, they had taken "blue pills."

Nebraska supreme court rules that an abused 16 year old girl in foster care is not mature enough to decide to have an abortion (in her first trimester). Though apparently she is mature enough to have a child she herself recognizes that she can't afford to support, and which will cause her to be kicked out of her current foster home, since her foster parents are very religious. During the original court hearing this summer, the judge in the case asked the girl if she knew that, "When you have the abortion, it's going to kill the child inside you." Her lawyer appealed, based on the exception for parental abuse in Nebraska's consent law, and also claiming the judge should have recused himself from the case on the basis of that statement.

In a 5-2 decision, the Nebraska supreme court upheld the judge's decision, despite the dissenting member's opinion that the girl was in a kind of legal limbo due to the vagaries of the Nebraska law brought to light by this girl effectively having no parents, and that the case raises US constitutional issues because she will not now be allowed to choose to have an abortion.

Japanese spam is indeed a horrible news story.

And WTF is wrong with your country, Larry? Do people actually get off on abusing animals?

Some people do. I think the videos are made for both local and overseas consumption, though. The example vid was not just a couple people getting off. It's actually something of a commercial product.

That's what I meant. I didn't realize that there were so many sickos who enjoyed watching this, that it could support a commercial enterprise.

More women complain of videotaping at Puyallup jail

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- KING 5 News has learned that nearly two dozen more women have come forward with complaints about videotaping at the Puyallup city jail.

Most of the women were DUI suspects who say they were forced to strip naked in a holding cell to change into jail clothes. They didn’t know they were being recorded on a monitor that could be seen by mostly male jailers.

[...]

The City of Puyallup said on the day that the lawsuit was filed that such filming in jails was a common industry standard and that they would not change the practice.

“The jail videos we’ve watched so far don’t show any inappropriate activity. In fact, the corrections officers are acting very professionally,” said Puyallup City Attorney Kevin Yamamoto.

Four jail experts told KING 5 in August that videotaping inmates in their most private moments is highly unusual and improper.

Curiously, the article doesn't say whether any male DUI suspects were put in this special video recording equipped cell and required to strip naked, or whether any have complained. I'd find it a little weird to have to disrobe and change clothes for a DUI, let alone be recorded while doing so.

EDIT: And here's why. Back in August - Suit: Puyallup jail filmed suspects' nudity

[Seattle attorney James] Egan said more than two years ago he noticed while reviewing evidence that two of his female DUI clients were forced to disrobe at the Puyallup jail, even though they weren’t being booked and they were about to be released.

He made public record requests for more jailhouse videos.

“I wondered if there was a pattern,” Egan said.

He said he found that women were being ordered to use the bathroom and change in cells equipped with video cameras. He found that males were more likely to use a curtained area in the jail’s common area that he said is not monitored by cameras.

Puyallup City Attorney Kevin Yamamoto says the suit is baseless.

At least they weren't babies... or were they?

This one is truly cringe-worthy, especially for you menfolk:

Mother rips her son's nuts off, then tries to superglue them back on.

The mother's location at the time of the incident falls under special maritime and territorial jurisdiction even though she is a civilian.

I hope this means they can send her to Gitmo... or something. How cruel.

Just snapped 'em off like a paper towel.

I always have a sense of dread when I click this thread.
