Space Hulk Boardgame PC/iOS adaption

Didn't see a thread for this... so here it is.. I know we have more than a few Space Hulk fans..

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013...

People were going nutty on Twitter about this- surprised there are no responses in here about it.

Weird. They must be part of the IRC/Twitter/Too-good-for-the-forums-now crowd.

I'm really excited about this - never got my hands on a copy of the board game of my own, but have played a ton of it over the years.

Definitely looking forward to it, seems like a logical step given the success of XCOM.

The pre-order has shown up on Steam for $29.99.

Key Features:
The first Space Hulk computer game in 17 years! Available on multiple platforms.
Set in the hugely popular Warhammer 40,000 universe! Official license of the legendary boardgame from Games Workshop.
Turn-based tactical strategy game! Based on the popular and iconic board game mechanics.
Blood Angel Terminators! Fight the ferocious Genestealers with heroes of the mighty Blood Angels.
Fearsome Genestealers with challenging AI! Meet unforgiving hordes of Genestealers!
Thematic 3D environment! Experience the dark labyrinth of a Space Hulk as never before..
Single player campaign based on the "Sin of Damnation" space hulk! Take on the Sin of Damnation campaign, which includes 3 brand new prequel missions and the 12 missions from the classic board game.
Multiplayer head-to-head recreating the board game experience against a friend! Get in the hot seat and battle it out with a friend.
Cross platform multiplayer between Windows PC, Mac and iOS! Play asynchronous against friends and foes on multiple platforms.

The price is honestly throwing me off a bit (I was expecting more like twenty). I'm sure the iOS port will be cheaper, and I wonder if there are significant differences.

I'm actually really surprised since Warhammer Quest on iOS is (seemingly) much more game for $12ish after you buy all the IAP. Maybe the multiplatform multiplayer aspect drove up the costs.

Then again, the last incarnation of Space Hulk was selling at $200, so even at $30 this is a steal

Yikes that's expensive. I'd have to wait and see what value they added to the game over just the base gameplay.

Never played Space Hulk, but I'm completely fascinated by what I've heard, and the 40k Universe in general. $30 seems pretty reasonable for a launch price, but this does also fit the profile of a game I'd pick up on a 50% off Gamersgate or Steam sale anyway.

Hopefully some people pick it up so it gets a bit of traction.

I've been considering selling my copy of Space Hulk as it never gets any time on the table, and it's worth a ton of money. Maybe I'll sell it and buy this, I do love the game!

I hope this sells well enough to get an xbla port!

I'm a little hesitant about the lack of a mission editor (at least I've not seen one mentioned) and just a 15 mission campaign for the price, but game-play wise it sounds spot-on.

...also if all this isn't leading up to a Necromunda game somewhere down the road then there's something very wrong with the world...

Well, Games Workshop is, and always has been, all about the Benjamins. Note that there will be further content and features added - as DLC. To a $30 game.

Maybe Mr. Ian Livingstone wants his KBE.

So this a game not a computerized board game?

Yeah, it is, as I understand it. Space Hulk has been out as a board game for years... One of the big differences that they will surely monetize is that the board game has corridors that can be assembled into many different layouts for different scenarios. The computer versions will quite likely charge you for each official map layout. That's what I expect.

Actually, the game developers put up a very interesting FAQ on steam. There will be a free level editor "later."

This is the same company that put out Frontline: Tactics, so there is some mixed history here.

Q: Will there be user created content?
Yes. We are working on polishing up our internal level builder tools to allow everyone to make levels, to share them as well as download.

Cool - that's all I needed to know.

I don't think Livingston has had any involvement in Games Workshop for years. He was certainly pre-Warhammer as far as I recall. Unless of course Eidos are publishing this.

Well, that's a good sign (the free editor).

Yeah, you're right, I just rip on GW on principle, having watched them gouge the fans for decades.

Well if you want to get your feet wet without dropping 30$ you could try Alien Assault. Its the boardgame fan-ported to PC and is completely identical other than the art and names to avoid copyright infringement. The only thing it lacks is multiplayer.

Ooh, cool! Thanks for that, I'll have a go.

TBH I'm not interested in seeing a completely faithful boardgame port as the boardgame itself is a bit on the broken side. The core concepts are great though, and translate well to a computer game.

I really hope so ....

It's coming out today. I would love to hear some impressions before I jump in. I have become kind of a 40k junkie after playing Space Marine and DoW 2.

I'd like to know how the AI holds up.

So this just dropped on steam,

Anyone want to give opinions/review?

Love to...except my Internet died and I couldn't download either this or gone home. and the BT "helpline" seemed to be unmanned this evening.

I am displeased.

Playing it, loving it. Seems very similar to the board game. Only played the first few missions so I cant speak to more complex AI operations. The tutorial missions (called prequel) are well laid out. Introduces you to basic strategy: Action Points, Overwatch, Guard, Use of Flamers as blocking mechanism (and BBQ), destroying or blocking doors, and general combat. Missions I have seen so far include - Annihilation (Kill X Genestealers to complete), Rescue (Reach comrade and pass teleporter prior to getting overrun) and breakout (take squad from one point to another with X members surviving). The voice over work is a nice touch. I'm a sucker for Space Marine stuff so this is right up my alley. I could see this game minting money through DLC with skins and expansions. Might be a way for those who wanted more board game Space Hulk to get their fix. There are some nice touches in the game with the helmet "cams" and the atmosphere is perfect (IMHO). I haven't tried the multiplayer, but it appears similar to the 1v1 experience the board game generated. I will also pick this up for my iPad in a heartbeat.

Totally agree. The 'feel' is there with some nice touches. The voice over is great. The helmet cam is a nice touch. Very cool too is when the game zooms in with up close and personal animation of a fight. (Oh yea, I'm particularly happy about cross-platform play. It will be interesting to see if the iPad can compete well enough with with the desktops (I too will get the iPad version pronto...I keep searching for it constantly not knowing the launch time table for it on it:))

Rock Paper Shotgun review totally butchered the game.

"OMG THIS IS NOT A PERFECT RECREATION OF THE BOARD GAME RIGHT DOWN TO THE INANIMATE PLASTIC PEICES, IT IS THE WORST !!!1"'

Maybe I am missing something, but that is what his review sounded like to me ?

Have to say I was all excited to buy but that review made me worry. Is there a demo out?
