Demon's Souls - Catch All

Tuffalo, you are making me want to just answer each question one by one with quotes directly from the Demon's Souls Wikidot.

*scrunches face* Sorry. I just wanted to experience the game more like having a chat with friends about it. I realize this is a bit hard since the game has been out forever. I don't mind quotes from Wikidot if they are specific to whatever question! I just don't want to learn anything extra which is what will happen if I go to the Wiki.

At any rate, I got plenty of info about how to progress from Dakuna. However, I would love to see some quotes from the wiki in regards to the characters that I inquired about.

No worries here; I love talking about this game so I'm always happy to help where I can Didn't see your previous questions, though hahaha I'll check them out later if you haven't figured them out

Well, this could either be something or absolutely nothing. I'm really hoping for something!

Hopefully this doesn't result in a weird franchise split like the one involving Never Say Never Again.

Here's a quick question. I just went through level 4-1. I forgot to kill myself beforehand, so I got invaded. For some reason, the guy just waved at me and let me kill him. Not sure what that was all about. Anyways, I got a bit further and summoned someone for the first time! He made short work of the rest. I just hung back for the most part so as not to screw anything up. Got the demon at the end and a rating thing came up. The ratings were S, A, B, C, and D if I recall correctly. What's the best rating? I entered an A because he basically killed everything for me. I wasn't quite sure how the soul dividing worked. I still got a ton of souls, so I'm afraid I wasn't very generous.

After the first mini-boss, my helper gave me a bow. I did the Hurray! gesture. It was hilarious.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that when I just logged in 30 minutes or so ago, I got two recommendations on my signs. It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling. I can't wait for DS2, so that I can really take part in those. It'll be fun to actually be a part of the collaboration.

Edit 2: Oh man, I went back to 4-1 and found that enchanted falchion mentioned earlier. Holy crap is that thing great in level 2-2.

The best rating is S

IIRC, each boss is worth a set number of souls for the host (regardless of whether they have helpers), and a percentage of that number (50%? 75%?) for each surviving helper; there isn't a pool of souls that is divided among the participants. I don't believe the number of souls a helper receives is influenced by the rating they receive from the host, but I'm not certain.

You're correct, the souls reward is not mutable, and I believe it is always 50% to the helpers.

Thanks for the info!

Next question. I ran into this so called Dragon "God" last night. Somehow, I managed to run through the area to the first ballista thing or whatever it's called. I got nailed trying to get through the next part, however. After that, I couldn't even get through the first part. How do you sort of lure him into hitting the area you're trying to go so that all the obstacles are broken up? Every time I tried, I ended up getting to close and he nailed me. I tried shooting him to get him mad and that didn't work.

Spoiler:

You can take out those obstacles yourself, with spells, arrows or melee if you are careful. The idea that you can lure him into doing it for you never occurred to me. I guess running out then back might work, but it sounds very risky to and incredibly difficult to time (at least to me). The trick is to only move from cover when he is looking away from you and his eyes are not glowing red.

Oh!

Spoiler:

I tried arrows and nothing happened, so I figured that wouldn't work. Must have just been a goof. I'll try using soul arrow. Sounds like it won't be a problem with those tips. Awesome!

I plan on playing a bit tonight. Where about is this blacksmith in area 2-2 that got mentioned? I beat that jumping fire boss guy in area 2-2. I'm guessing the blacksmith is way down in the tunnels somewhere. Also, do you have to bring your materials from the nexus with you?

Spoiler:

That smith is reached via the elevator that is behind the filthy salesman (is that his moniker? I forget) near the start of 2-1. The elevator is activated by going the opposite way and going through a cave mouth leading outside near the lava-filled pit you get to cool off.

There is no blacksmith in 2-2. Only two smiths in total in this game.

Thanks! I must have missed him or just forgotten about him when I took a long break.

He's very easy to miss unless you know to look for him. The vendor in 2-1 is the Filthy Man.

I cleared the whole area last night before realizing where he was. I went to the top of the elevator instead of the bottom. Whoops. Got my dragon longsword upgraded a little bit.

Defeated the dragon god after 1 death. I forgot to put the fire resistance ring on and got nailed at the very end. I couldn't get arrows to work breaking the stone, but soul arrow worked well enough even though aiming was difficult.

Fortunately you can just chug spice as required

The night before last, I worked on area 3-2. Didn't really have a lot of issues. My main issue was falling to my death after a swing/lunge at an enemy took me over the edge. Any advice for avoiding that? My guess is that you just have to be really careful. I switched to using my enchanted falchion rather than the dragon longsword to avoid accidental lunges. I let the fellow with the curved sword/scythe thing loose from his cage. There was a liar note by him, so I killed him. Should I haven't? NO RISKS! I ended up not making it to the boss after that. Mostly, I was running really low on healing stuff, so that ended up being my undoing. It was right where you go up an elevator and two of the black winged dudes swarm you right as you get off the elevator. I wasn't really mentally prepared to deal with two of them in close quarters like that.

I don't mind getting advice for that boss, either, whatever it may be. I'm guessing it's a big, giant, nasty heart.

Good job killing him. His name is Yurt. You can see my rage about him on page 63 of this thread. Also, my suggestion for not falling to your death in 3-2 is to just finish it. I hate 3-2. Like hate it so much I think it doesn't belong in the Souls universe. I felt like very little of the challenge and accomplishment stemmed from difficult enemies, and almost entirely from game limitations and poor level design. But yeah, maybe a different weapon might help.

So weird... I always enjoyed world 3. The only thing I hated was the damn pvp monk issues. The terror and sweaty hands on the controller were crazy intense here, even after multiple playthroughs

You didn't like it? I found it quite easy by comparison to 3-1. Only fell to my death once, really, and that one time was entirely my fault. I did approach the stage - and the game in general - with an inordinate amount of patience, going reeeeaaaal slow. The first gargoyle stature spooked me, but then i got the hang of it so that even the ones that would spring on me while ascending the towers did not really surprise me; I rather expected something to turn up given how precarious footing appeared up those spiral staircases.

Speaking of 3-2:

Maneater(s) down! Gah, that fight gave me a ton of trouble.

I had some trouble with it this last time through, but patience and knowing the layout of the boss fight arena really helps. Congratz on defeating it!

3-3 down!

Only faced one player, this afternoon. Dick kept eating grass. We fought for at least 10 minutes before he finally killed me. I had him on the ropes many times, but he always managed to eat grass.

Tonight I got no players, just the monk. Beat him on maybe the 2nd or 3rd try.

4-2 / Old Hero down...on the first try. What the what?

EDIT: It was so easy that I looked him up; I lucked into walking into his room with the Thief's Ring equipped and only leather armor on, so apparently I had the perfect gear.

EDIT 2: corrected world number

4-3 down! Man, I set a goal of getting back in and finishing this before Saints Row 4, and I am trucking along!

Good show I think you've inspired me to give Gwyn a few tries on DkS.

Just picked up my NG+ run of this game the other night. The road to Platinum has begun!

5-2 down! Beat Dirty Mofo on the first try!

I found world 5 surprisingly easy, once I got over my aversion of it. Now I've tried going back, and have zero interest in slogging through it again. That said... Platinum. Hmm.
