super unimpressed with the zombies. looks like they're doin a great job making the game super frustrating zombie wise, in a bad way.
They still look like placeholder zombies from the original (Arma2 mod).
Well, at least we're all used to zombies-through-the-floor by now, one less thing to learn
At this point, while there's hope for the standalone being a great thing by itself, i'm more interested in whether it can be modded. I'd bet a lot that the actual standalone as released is just a big giant experience in frustration.
There's whole layers of interesting stuff that's been added to the mod by the community.
The new inventory and clothing system is the best thing i'm seeing from the standalone right now by far. If that could be combined with say DayZ epoch though, i wouldn't want standalone. I'd already have everything i desired.
The community dayz mods are doing things rocket will probably never do cause he just doesn't seem interested. But these things are added a game to dayz that makes it really fun to actually play. And it gives it more purpose.
With base building and buying and selling and currency and many other things and some mods even with levels and skill systems it seems, i'm more interested in what the community could do with standalone at this point, but now i'm actually worried cause standalone may cut out the mod tools to prevent hacking and we won't get things like DayZ epoch in standalone. That's especially disturbing since the community is doing a great job on it's own currently of improving the anti - hack means available to DayZ well beyond what rocket and bohemia and battle eye have done.
Given a choice between the two i'd prolly pick DayZ epoch at this point.

Very Important
Matt forgot to explain the situation with zombie attacks:
Basically, we made a new system for the zombie animation attacks, but there is no event handler for that yet because it just went in this week. We need the event handler to synchronize the animation with its attack effects. Currently, as a placeholder, it simply plays the effect half a second after the animation is started.
The event handler is scheduled to be finished any day now, which will allow us to sequence the attack. It's a very trivial change but will obviously instantly improve the output.
It has nothing to do with hit detection, animations, or anything. It's how it is designed a placeholder.
Because we are rewriting many parts of the engine, problems like this (i.e. known bugs waiting for replacement of placeholder elements) are very common through the development as we wait for the sequence of development to occur.
tl;dr
The zombie attacks aren't sequenced for the animations because its a new system thats 50% coded and waiting for event handlers to allow synchronization, which is trivial to implement once made
State of Decay might have stolen the thunder for this. Anyone know what the price will be for this?
From memory they were touting a low entry price point for the alpha, with steadily increasing price as it gets towards completion... but it's been a while since I've read about costs, and I'm sure they'll have changed their minds since the stand-alone was announced..

State of Decay is a completely different look, feel, style of game that just happens to have similar goals.

And I can't play it on my PC.

New youtube dev blog for August 2013
benchmarks, sprints, milestones feels like im at work.
New gameplay from Gamescom....looking better every time they show it.
I miss playing but too spoiled by Arma3 to go back to the old version. They need to hurry up and take my money!
Given the constant delays I'm thinking pre-alpha -> proper release is gonna be a longggg while that said I'd probably buy into a minecraft style pricing system if they ever bother getting around to that.
Did anyone else feel uncomfortable watching Rocket gun down a civilian women in cold blood to demonstrate the damage to her shirt?
Is my willing suspension of disbelief gland underdeveloped?

He shoots a guy too, but they used to get flak about not having women in the game.
Hmm, strange that there are discussions about having more equality between the sexes in gaming, and then also feeling worse that a bunch of pixels that are arranged to look like a female have more effect than those arranged to look like a male
If we're going to put real-life feelings into a game, I'd rather not shoot anything down in cold, or warm blood, for that matter

It is a bit weird how clinical he is about it ("watch what happens when I shoot her here"), but for him it's just a representation of the code and design he's been working on.
Wow that latest blog looks really good. Up to now I was not super impressed with their progress, but this latest blog really changes things.
The part that I'm most excited about is the engine itself. If they make it moddable, this can take off and spawn a whole ecosystem of games the way Half-Life did in the early days.
Just a note for anyone very excited that wants more up to date information. Here is a video from a youtuber that posts weekly re-caps of all of Rockets comments and tweets etc. Not a fan of his other work but nice easy re-cap to know whats going on with the stand alone.
Wow i hope so.
BRING IT ON
