Card Hunter Catch-All

I was surprise to discovered that this thread didn't exist after Julian talk about this game on the podcast a couple of weeks ago. So here it is.

From the their site:

Card Hunter is a brand new collectible card game that you play online. It’s free to play and you collect your cards by playing against the game, not by buying booster packs.

Create your adventuring party, explore dungeons, collect loot and then battle other players online!

Nice video overview here:

Looks great!

For those like me who'd rather have a link to the game's site than Google it.

My first question on these games is always "What's the business model?"

What will I have to pay?
The game will be free to play. There will be an in-game store where you will be able to buy items and other things that enhance your game experience. More details will be announced as we progress / figure it out.

I'm apparently in the minority here based on how popular F2P is, but I'd really rather see an honest up-front cost instead of finding out 4 hours into the game that I need to trudge through micro-transaction purgatory if I wish to continue.

Fired up the beta last night which was a mistake since it ended up costing me at least an hour of sleep.

From what I saw of the campaign it was...nice. This is a charming, easy n' breezy game from the looks of it. I am liking their rule system and attaching ability cards to items is a unique spin on on the usual loot/card compulsion cycle.

I don't know if this has the longevity to compete with the cavalcade of F2P TCGs hitting us in the face this year. It may actually be too easy n' breezy for its own good.

Unless I missed something, this is a dungeon-crawl RPG with CCG mechanics right? That's a bit different than what SolForge, Hex, etc. are doing.

I'm curious to see how the microtransactions pan out. If it's truly too easy, we could be burning through DLC campaigns left and right.

Anyone else really into this? It's been my go to game for the last week, so much so that I already pitched them some money. They really hit the sweet spot of game speed, theme, and interesting mechanics. Every time I think the game is petering out in challenge and complexity I hit a module that I can just barely beat.

Looking forward to trying it, but I'm planning on waiting until after it's properly released.

What did you spend your cash on? There are so many things asking for my pizza, I'm afraid to spend even the little bit they spotted me for free. I have no idea what's important.

Basically just enough to join the Card Hunter club for one month. I had been playing a while and thought it was worth sending them some money. Plus I think the pizza resets every time the beta resets, so I'll still have that pizza at launch.

Got it. Does the subscription have any benefits beyond the extra loot drop?

I'm still chipping away at the single player campaign in small increments. I lost my first battle in a Level 6 dungeon and the game asked for some currency to revive my party...so that ended my day yesterday.

Have you mucked around with multiplayer? I opened up the window, but the dialog suggested it would baby me into multiplayer later after I got further in the campaign.

Beta invite time! Loving this already.

Tried the multiplayer yesterday. I felt like a lamb being led to the slaughter. Not sure how many points you get for a win... but it's a little intimidating when the lowest ranked person online has 900 plus.

That being said, I did enjoy the game. Especially liked the fact that all multiplayer games seem to have a hard twenty minute cap.

Man, this game scratches me in all the right places. Cards? Tactical Turn Based Combat? Fantasy Setting? Kitchy Tabletop aesthetic?

Sooooooo good. I have no desire to try out the multiplayer, unless they have a way to tier folks by their equipment ratings/rankings (else it turns into a play to win scenario) but I'd love to do something like this with a "Sealed Deck/Draft" or even Zen aspect to it.. Make it happen Blue Manchu!

Haven't looked at multiplayer yet but am happy to have a go against reasonably equally tiered goodjers.

Despite the traditional flood of new games during the Summer Sale this is still my go-to game.

I have a spare beta key or two for this if anyone's interested.

I would love one!

go to http://accounts.cardhunter.com/register and use the key

If you use a key, please post here that it's used so I can remove it from the list. I realize that there's a very high chance of this not happening but thought I'd ask anyway :)

I claimed the middle code. Thanks!

Sent. Still got one spare.

EDIT: All gone.

Here is some more:

I have 3 keys also, pm if you want in. (not just posting them to ensure they go to gwjers).

edit: 1 claimed, 2 left

Played through the Greenfang scenario. Everything is pretty slick!

My only gripes at the moment are inventory management and that I can't change the characters' outfits it seems.

I grabbed VSJH-XXGQ-JFBQ. Thanks!

I've been living under a rock, is this game out and available for purchase?

Still in beta.

Yeah, got a key from Maq. So far it's seriously impressive. I like the aesthetic, the mechanics are cool and it plays quickly.

It's a little aggravating when you don't pull enough movement cards though.

Or when your Dwarf Cleric pulls 4 walks and a run.

What I'm curious to know is the difference between the different races at higher levels. Elves seem to get speed boosts, Humans have versatility and Dwarves get Survival. But I have no idea what that actually means in game terms, wish this thing had a wiki.

As you level up you open up an equipment slot for your class and an equipment slot for your race. You can equip "skills" in those slots which offer 3 cards of a specific type. A human warrior may, for example equip a Martial skill that provides an cards that offer ongoing bonus to slashing attacks plus a high value slashing attack. They may also equip a Human skill which provides command cards which allow all other members of the team to take a free move, for example.
