Torchlight 2 Catch-All

The first game really grabbed me due to the timing. Diablo 2 was so old and crufty that I wasn't ever going back, but Torchlight mashed all of those same buttons that D2 did.

Torchlight 2? It came after both Torchlight 1 (of course) but also Diablo 3. I bought TL2, and it seemed fine, but it just had no legs because I think I'd already reached my Diablo quota for a few years.

If I get the urge to go back for a "Diablo" game in the future, maybe it'll be TL2.

Synergies mod. Play as the necromancer. It's a minion-master's dream.

+1

I didn't get D3, but I also played TL2 for about 1/3 the total hours I played TL1. For me it was because TL2 released (after multiple delays) the same week as Borderlands 2, a lootfest game that I was anticipating more than TL2.

Yeah, being matched up against Borderlands 2 by a week was yet another unfortunate bit of timing for the release. It's the headline deal of the day in the steam sale for $5 so maybe the time is finally right?

I picked this one up too, I'm down for some co-op. I've got my, girl with the guns?, to level 17 I believe.

Synergies mod. Play as the necromancer. It's a minion-master's dream.

Wow the Synergies mod changes a crapton of stuff. Will I miss anything if I install it right off the bat?

And are there any other mods you would recommend? I definitely want a respec potion. That's the only mod I made to the original Torchlight.

Gifted this during the sale, too. Let's light some torches!

Also, can I get an invite to the steam group?

I'll defer to others for mod recommendations, as I'm generally not a huge mod guy. That said, I played vanilla TL2 for a while and it just lacked...something. Something that TL1 had (and still does, even going back to it). Sort of how no game in my mind has ever been able to duplicate how good the guns 'felt' in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Synergies does indeed change a lot of stuff, but overall I feel that it was an improved version of TL2 compared to the original. If there's any issue with it, I'd say that there's a possibility of being a bit unbalanced (i.e. you can become pretty powerful fairly quickly) but the overall increase in the challenge of the creatures and dungeons compensates for this nicely. Thinking back, I had a lot more fun after I installed the Synergies mod than I did with the base game. Given that, I'd recommend that you go for it right out of the gate.

I really wish I could find like just a bullet pointed list of what Synergies does. Explanation of those changes under a sub-point for each main bullet point. For all the time they've been doing this, their features section of their website still refers to the forum... and the forum is lacking in this. For how long both the game and the mod have been out, that's kind of pathetic.

Just started a new game with Synergies as a Necromancer and I'm loving it. Thanks for all the recommendations, everyone.

Also, I'll just say again that I love how quickly you level and get good quality loot in TL2. The phat loot kept me up way too late last night.

I decided to give synergies a chance. Wow. Just use it. Loaded a game in progress, and it seemed to give the game an even better feel.

That was the main draw of TL2 for me... leveling and find loot for upgrades just felt right. Now if only I could have that with an ease of respec/# of potential builds from D3 and I would have the perfect dungeon crawl ARPG,

So it works on an existing save? no need to start over? I have a level 14 engineer I'm liking.

Yup. No issues with my existing save.

No need to start over. Tho, if you remove the addon on, the game could be weird or reacting weird to some of the items.

Thanks @MrTomaytohead, @Manach

Since it might break vanilla if I decide to stop using it, is there a way to back up your existing game first?

Do you think just backing up and restoring the Torchlight 2 folder under My Documents would do it?

That should be enough. But once you'll use synergy... You will not want to go back to vanilla, it's like a total upgrade which respect the core game.

Does anyone know of a mod that will keep the narrator from doing this:

"your pet is injured"

"your pet is fleeing"

"your pet has fled"

"your pet has fled"

"your pet has fled"

"your pet has fled"

"your pet has fled"

"your pet is injured"

(repeat)

Drives me nuts.

The Helpful Narrator mod is what you want.

Hyetalhaussered!

Maybe give your pet some decent gear and use the stances so it doesn't get its ass kicked.

Gracias, Hyetal & MeatMan.

I'm playing as a Necromancer on Veteran difficulty and so far things seem to be at the right balance. I only have trouble with larger packs and bosses who put up much more of a fight. All of my minion support gear applies to my pet cat as well, so he kicks ass.

The whole 7/7/7 + 3/3/3 skills and passives setup seems interesting enough. The mod does include a respec potion but it only affects skill points and not attributes. Attributes don't seem to be hugely important, Vitality and Focus affect health and mana, but Dexterity and Strength pretty much just tweak percentages. I guess they also grant access to gear, but all gear can be accessed at a particular level too.

I like having minion swarms but the integration is still a little rough, it doesn't tell me how much damage they do or how much health they have. They also don't show up on radar either so I have to keep track of how many have been destroyed and resummon them periodically. It's satisfying, but it's no Diablo 2, at least not yet. The number of minions ramps up pretty slowly.

It doesn't have the ludicrous complexity that Path of Exile does but it doesn't really need to. Not sure how much of everything is from the synergies mod as I have never played the base game and can't compare the two.

I just downloaded the Synergies mod, but I don't see a necromancer class. Did I do something wrong?

EverythingsTentative wrote:

You don't have the scroll button option at the character screen? Also, do you have any other mods installed? If so, maybe bump Synergies mod to top in the mod config screen.

DOH...I wasn't clicking play with mods.

Do you guys have a particular build you go for in terms of attributes? As a necromancer I think I should be focusing on Focus and Vitality the most. I'm also mixing in a little STR AND DEX to round off my crit percentanges to the nearest 5.

Just picked this up during the sale. I love how steam handles mods now. I was just thinking I would love a few changes and I go into workshop. Top rate mod are the synergies mod you mention and a compilation mod. The latter looked more to my taste and should be perfect for me. Now if I can find a mod to have more free time.

Been playing this game as my primary time sink lately. I'm on my first time through. Have Synergies installed and playing on Veteran. I'm currently mostly cleared out of the 1st open area in act II and level 26 or 27 as an engineer with 4 bots (healing, sledge, gun, slow) + summon skeleton. So I can bring up a good host of helpers for big encounters.

Anyways, if anyone wants to co-op let me know. I might only be able to do an hour a night most nights, around 9:30/10 Eastern, though.

Finally fired this up, and used the Synergies 2 mod, as Necromancer was quite appealing to me. I transferred over another save with a Berserker at about 2 hours in... immediately upon loading I was attacked by a huge group of mobs with 3 Hero class baddies!!! I'm assuming this was some sort of glitch?
