The Binding of Isaac

I gave this another shot last week, hoping to finally beat mom. I managed to finally make it to mom, but was unsuccessful in defeating her. Currently 0 - 114. I'm setting it down again until the non-flash remake.

I really enjoy the game, and hopefully I'll keep improving when I fire it up again. I really surprised myself at how bad I am at it, but at least I enjoy playing it.

The internet suggests; Curse of the Labyrinth, Bible and The Emperor Card as an ideal set of pick ups/events.

The only time I ever got the Bible and Emperor combo, I managed to get hurt on Level 1 of the depths. Never saw it again, and certainly never saw them both combined with Labyrinth. That's out of at least 100 attempts, maybe closer to 200. Sometimes I wonder if McMillen coded some combos to be more unlikely than others.

So I got this combo today.... ಠ_ಠ

IV Bag + Bloody Penny + Magnet

. You can take care of the latter two by running Challenge 6 (the one where you start with Dr. Fetus) and just nuke everything.

Great bit of advice. Just did The Caves no damage run on my first attempt. Just the Depths to go!

Sorry to hear you are dropping out of it. I've seen people go for 200 deaths plus before killing her for the first time. But I don't blame you... it takes a special sort of patience to still say you enjoyed it after that many deaths.

Are you playing with the expansion? It makes things a bit harder. Are you avoiding spoilers? There are lots of little tips that can make this game a lot easier, if you know what to look for.

Runs like these are why I love this game - this did SO much damage.

Someone on reddit just released a "Binding of Issac Guide" on the iOS App Store:

Looks to be a pretty decent way of looking up stuff without having to minimize your game, and for that I am excited.

The Binding of Isaac wiki is so clunky, I'm going to download this as soon as I get home. Maybe play a little Isaac as well.

Sadly 2 years too late to be useful to me

Well, we can always hope for a faster turnaround once the remake comes out then!

Pyroman retweeted a Polygon article about an Isaac racing league. I watched one round from their second season, and I can already tell I'm going to go back and watch as many as I possibly can.
They all start from a common save file with all the same unlocks available. A match is a best of three rounds to see who can defeat Mom's Heart first. The randomness of Isaac really adds a cool element to the whole thing. I can't wait to dig into this a bit deeper!

I'm a racer in the league. It's amazing how much publicity this has received recently.

What's your racing name?

That's awesome! Tell us who you are so we have someone to root for

Sorry I couldn't stick around last night, Trainwreck. My internet picked a really bad time to cut out. Did you win?

So tempted to start racing. I do so love the BoI.

Unfortunately I did not. I'm still leading my division so I'm not too upset.

It's all my fault! D:

Wow this game is messed up. Also I'm pretty terrible at it, I have yet to get past floor 3. Any tips? The length of my game seems to depend entirely on what powerups I happen to get.

That's what makes it a rogue-like!

Tip 1: Losing is fun.
Tip 2: The longer you play, the more stuff you unlock and the easier it is.
Tip 3: Until it suddenly gets harder.

Thanks for turning me on to BoI. It's the most charming game about child abuse I've ever played.

What what do unlocks actually do? Sometimes I find random items that change Isaac, or other random stuff that he carries around. These show up in the unlocks menu, but do they actually do anything?

There's a big wiki about items, trinkets and tarot cards that explain what everything does. Occasionally you'll get a white message that something "has appeared in the dungeon," or something along those lines. That means you've unlocked a new item that might randomly spawn on subsequent playthroughs. It doesn't mean that it's literally appeared or that you should scour your current floor for it.

The "unlocks list" is just a catalog of all the items you've picked up through all playthroughs.

I like to think they're a metaphor for coping with abuse; Isaac must become a monster in order to survive his horrible circumstances.

I've been playing and watching this game a TON over the last few months.

What I find totally awesome is that just this weekend, I found and followed your stream only to come to GWJ and find out I was supporting a goodjer. Super awesome!

Such a great idea! The RNG is brutal, but skill is definitely a huge part. Kind of reminds me of Texas Hold 'Em, without playing for money. ...Yet.

Missed opportunity. Should have said, "I took Trainwreck as a late-round throwaway in my BOILeR Fantasy League. I'm pleasantly surprised!"

I watched Crumps's cast of your week 8 match. Your opponent got extremely lucky with his build.
After watching a few of these, I'm tempted to do a bit of practicing and then do a mock race against one of the casts.
