I thought this was going to be about Poutine and got all excited. Shouldn't browse GWJ while hungry. That said, this looks really slick and I hope more gameplay vids surface soon.
A graduate of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) who now teaches on the course he studied will see his debut game released on Steam next spring. After almost 500,000 views of the game’s trailer, Aaron Foster’s survival horror Routine, which is set on the Moon, was greenlit by Valve’s community in October.
The resulting sci-fi horror is inspired by movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, the original Alien, and bleak 1972 space thriller Silent Running. “I didn’t want to make a game that is like a movie, though,” says Foster. “I want to start pushing the reasons why people interact with a game. A game should mean something more than pressing the right buttons to trigger cutscenes.”
The jeopardy which is meant to ensure actions really matter in Routine is the introduction of the divisive mechanic of permadeath. “That’s a good starting point for putting pressure on the player,” he says. “If a player comes to the game with typical FPS preconceptions and dies I hope the permanent death will make them sit back and question what they do.”
It's dripping in atmosphere. The one thing I'd ding it on, which is a personal thing, is the heavy breathing when he sees the robots coming for him, which is the difference between "I'm scared" (as in, I, the person playing) and "my character is scared". I had a similar problem with Amnesia, that it's essentially saying "be scared now" rather than actually just scaring me. Amnesia had a ton of atmosphere too and didn't really need that extra bit, I wonder if there's a mod for that.
I immediately thought System Shock as well. Definitely looks good, especially this part...
A non linear experience lets you explore any part of the fully open Moon base and find out secrets that other players may not!
Be immersed with Full body awareness, Deadzone aiming, no HUD, no health bars or points system... you must run, hide and survive the best you can against what lurks in the base.
There are no health packs or multiple lives, in Routine there is a Perma death system that will keep you on the edge!
I didn't play Amnesia, because it just didn't interest me enough. That new gameplay video for Routine, however, looks and sounds great. This is definitely on my radar now.

892 condescending Certis quotes out of a possible infinity - Elysium scores Torchlight lower than expected.

That looks..like what System Shock 2 looked in my head.

Imagination rules. Tech's kind of cool, too.

Awesome! Good to see some gameplay finally and that it's looking real good and creepy!
No gravy, no cheese, no fries. This thread does not deliver.

I'm really liking the design. But if this is Amnesia in space, I don't think my heart can take the terror.

In the absence of music, some aural cues to tension are necessary to the level of immersion. As such, I'm totes cool with the heavy
pettingbreathing.Yeah, I love that touch. Just make sure your breath is louder when playing, Scratched, haha.

The character is wearing a space helmet, of course your breathing is going to be louder when it's enclosed in a small space like that.
Pretty typical sci-fi trope.

RPS just posted an interview with one of the devs, in which he says, "we are aiming for the end of this year. But you know how that goes!"
