GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

Over the last couple of weeks, I've noticed the My Favorite Topics counter not counting correctly.
I have 10 favorite threads with unread posts, but the counter only tallies up to 4.

Is there an expiration date on the counters? Some of those thread I've left for later due to spoilers and other reasons.

Threads with posts that were edited will show up as having "unread" posts, but the favorite topics (new) tally won't count them.

There seem to be other conditions, as there's a couple threads I have stopped going into, but are still on my favorites and the number of new keeps changing up and down but it never gets reported as part of the tally.

The site has gotten so slow for me that it's borderline un usable. Sometimes clicking a thread and having to refresh multiple times to get anything to show up.

I thought it's actually been better this week, since the Sun night maintenance.

Not for me it hasn't.

I haven't had any problems with the site in over a week.

It's been laggy for me all day today. I'll post or edit, then wait for over a minute sometimes to see if it actually took.

It got really bad when the Xbox news broke.

I continue to have occasional slow page loads over the last couple of days as well. My general sense is that the side is performing somewhat better than it had been in recent weeks, though.

Hey folks, sorry about the recent performance issues. I'm upgrading us to new hardware later this week (probably Thu or Fri night) and hoping that will help.

Hey all, so we did a "hardware" upgrade over the weekend ("hardware" because it's a VPS ). Things seem to be performing much more admirably now, but please let me know if you continue to encounter issues.

On a related note, I'm being very aggressive about blocking behavior that looks like it's coming from bots or spammers. If this affects you or any legitimate users you know of, please PM me here or DM @GWJOps on Twitter.

It's running real smooth for me, for sure.

I use RSS from the forums frequently but I am noticing some problems getting TT-RSS or other feed validators to see the forum feeds as valid.

For example: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/taxono...

TT-RSS says: This XML document is invalid, likely due to invalid characters. XML error: Unknown at line 164, column 7

Line 164 is the last line of the document. Weird. Looks like a valid close rss tag to me.

W3C Atom/RSS validator says it hates the itunes category tags: http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.c...

Not very helpful.

Any ideas? Is this just a bjorked Drupal thing?

I looked into the RSS issue a few months ago. The core of the problem is that the RSS tag at the beginning doesn't have namespace declarations for the itunes and libsyn tags.

Right now, things seem smooth. Thanks for the hard work.

Butter smooth for me. Thanks for all the work you do.

Quoting myself:

The issue is that there is no xmlns entry for the "itunes" or "libsyn" namespaces.

I wrote a little php script which takes the feed and makes it valid. For reference this is available here. Note the extra xmlns attributes in the rss tag near the beginning of the document.

There's not much to "fixing" the problem by adding the xmlns attributes after the fact - I can provide feed proxies URLs to "fix" this for end users until the real fix happens, if anybody is interested in that.

Is anyone else having an issue with using quotes in posts? It doesn't seem to be working properly for me. All it does is include the quote tags rather than putting the quote itself into a block.

It's an anti-spam measure to prevent malicious links. Newly registered users (coffee grinder rank) can't use tags. It's been mentioned many times that it could be much better explained.

Lol, you know. I had a feeling it was something to do with that. But I didn't want to seem like the paranoid noob. Turns out I was just the regular old noob on the forum.

Thanks for the reply.

edit: In hindsight, this might have gone in the wrong thread

Any chance we can get a "add to favorites" link on front page articles? This would be helpful for tracking new posts in article discussions.

Suggestion for feature: The ability for a user to delete a post within 60 seconds of posting it? Might clean up some of the doubles.

Or dupe post detection?

Somehow flag the spot in a game catch all, at which the game releases.
The discussion changes significantly from anticipation and speculation, to strategy, bug help, tips, and kudos.

I'm often late to the party, and the game release can occur as far as 80 or so pages in.

Just noting an odd thing to make sure it really is just an odd thing and not something more sinister.
As of 8/15 7pm GMT if you look at http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/tracker there's a row for a post that is by anonymous and has no forum associated with it. (It is also not a live link which is probably a good thing in this case)

Feature Request:

It'd be cool to embed Vimeo like we can with Youtube videos (as well as Sketchfab and/or p3d.in, though obviously most Goodjers wouldn't often post links to 3D models. Just thought it'd be cool).

If we're adding embedding, Twitch.tv would also make sense when the big update comes. I think we even have some twitch streamers around that might want to post their streams.

Anyone else getting permission errors accessing some parts of the forum?

it's a bit erratic, atm i can't access 'games and platforms' at all. Usually i can't go to older pages in the forum.

probably a vagary of Windows Phone 8 and Internet Explorer.
