Dreadball

Just heard about this on another forum. Is it that good? Sounds like a playable version of Blood Bowl.

I haven't played Blood Bowl, so I don't have much of a basis of comparison, but this game was a lot of fun. The rules are pretty simple, and it is easy to pick up and be playing in almost no time at all. Most actions are rolling 3 six-sided dice, sometimes adding or subtracting a die, and hoping to get over a set number, based on your race/class. I think the first 4 turns took us about 45 minutes to play, since we had to look up each modifier, but the following 10 rounds only took about 30 minutes when we knew what we were doing. It manages something that I feel most miniatures games don't get right: a balance of the dice and the tactical placement. This is very much a dice game with miniatures, not a miniatures game with strong dice effects, but in general the Coach (player) can achieve a solid game plan even when the dice are not being cooperative.

My local gaming group loved Blood Bowl, but really only found it fun on the PC games. They also loved the idea of Dreadball, but so far only one person has picked up any teams.

Then enter Kaosball from CMON.

Supposedly this is even faster than Dreadball, and solves one of the biggest issues with Dreadball - the box comes with all 4 base factions, and ready for a 4-way game. There's no passing, which has been the biggest slowdowns when playing Blood Bowl. And the field is much smaller than either other game, getting straight to the interaction between teams.

4 other teams have already been unlocked, as well as a bunch of "ringers" that you can add in to your team to give you an edge.

This is right up my alley, but I watched the 40 minute gameplay video and found it so boring that I couldn't imagine backing it.

It's got me back to thinking of buying Dreadball, though.

Got some Amazon gift cards for Father's day, so decided to pick up Arkham Horror. I had wanted it for a while, so finally bit the bullet. My problem is, I have SOOOO many games on my wishllist that I want. Mainly I lean toward games I can solo, though lately I have also been picking up games I can play with ( or against ) my daughter. Just got Belfort by kickstarting its expansion, though haven't tried it with her yet. Once I finish up the game of Mage Knight I've been solo'ing ( and probably losing ), I'll let my daughter pick a game for us to play :)

Dude! I've got the game for you. Dawn of the Zeds, Second Edition from Victory Point Games (or any other Victory Point games for that matter).

Been looking real hard at Zeds. Have you played it yet?

I've played about a dozen games over the past month, and can say without reservation that it's one of my top twenty board games. Great mix of strategy and luck, solid replayability, and can easily be played co-op. For the price, it's hard to beat.

Dammit. Like I need another game... But always glad to hear about a good game.

Is it just me or, are you on the cover as a zombie?

I come seeking recommendations for a new version of Munchkin to acquire, back stab, and play. The most recent version I have is Munchkin Cthulhu, it is also my favourite standalone up to that point.

I'm looking to get some expansions too. What would you all recommend?

I was wondering if anyone went to Origins in Columbus, OH last week? Apparently a Sails of Glory demo was setup and I was curious if anyone checked it out?

Based on their excellent communication, Sails of Glory is one KS that I believe will show up eventually. I'm just not sure I can wait.

MonoCheli and I were there. As a backer I stopped to check out the Sails of Glory area. Didn't have the time to stop and play a full demo, but I did check out the ships and chat with the representative for awhile.

Two things I came away with:

One, I have no doubt this one will show up when it's due.

Two, I can't wait either.

Hey Smash Up players

Looking for decent card sleeves. I was using some boring ultra-pros and they were REALLY uneven in length.

Looking at Dragon Shield and KMC... any thoughts? would they still fit in that box thing?

Or should I just get penny sleeves or whatever.

Latest board game order game in, along with some random minis stuff, got Tokaido, Takenoko and City of Remnants. Looking forward to getting all three out this weekend.

If you've been a fan of Bauza's recent Japanese kick (both of these games are his), I just got notification on Wednesday that my order of Hanabi is finally in. It's a fantastic little co-op card game of his, deduction-based, plays in like 10 minutes. It's also like $8. Everyone should own this. I think it's even up for a SdJ this year.

Playing Rex again tonight. Arranging a future fall Twilight Imperium game in Kelowna, BC. Gonna happen. Planning an epic match. Never played it. Any tips? Any online version of TI I can cut my teeth on?

I don't think TI3 is all that intimidating; yeah, there's a lot of moving pieces but it's not too terribly complex. I think the most important part for people to realize is that it's not really a game of military conquest. Yeah, you'll probably get into some fights but armies are just as much a deterrent as they are an actual invasion force. So long as people know what they are getting into I think they tend to have a good time.

I prefer playing with the official Age of Empires variant or the unofficial Red Tape variant (see here or here). Both lay out all the public objectives from the start which allows for more strategic play; you can decide early which objectives to focus on and build your plans and techs around it.

Also check out my player aid. It can help save some table space and make the game run smoother with fewer calculations, etc.

Chase every single point on the board is the big rule.

Woooo! I didn't get totally wiped out in Rex tonight! And we got to turn 6 before life interrupted! (stupid life!) And someone brought free beer! Wooo!

Stay within your original zone of influence (the hexes around your home world) build a defensive fleet, take Imperial when ever possible, complete a couple of the easy objectives then win.

I'm in the club! thanks to my friend (NauticalNaught on here) gifting me Arkham Horror, I have the fever. Board gaming fever. I've spent the weekend studying AH and learning the rules and mechanics, and have played some both on my table, and with Cragmyre on Vassal, which was ridiculously cool, and fun.

I can't wait to add more to my collection. Primarily a single player, I have these on my wish list:

* D&D The Legend of Drizzt

* Agricola

* Fortune & Glory

* Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

* Marvel: Legendary

* Flash Point: Fire Rescue

* Police Precinct

* Mage Knight

* Zombicide

Those aren't in any order, but my most wanted right now are Marvel and Mage Knight. Well, enough chatter, back to Arkham!

For single player especially, I think Sentinels of the Multiverse is better than Marvel: Legendary by a fair margin.

Otherwise very solid list of games

Unfortunately SotM seems to be OOS, thus prices have been jacked up Also, a lot of people are reporting that the expansion to Legendary ( Dark City ) has improved the game. Of course, that means Legendary prices get jacked up because you now, in theory, need the core and expansion.

I own Legendary, and do enjoy it, but will also grab SotM when it is back to a reasonable price again, hopefully, someday soon.

Thanks, Mitchell.

according to both the BGG and Amazon pages for SotM, it's a "2 to 5 players" game. Is there a sp variant you're referring to?

edit: nm, Cragmyre cleared this up for me in chat.

Sentinels is indeed out of stock and has been for about a month and a half. They are indeed reprinting it. It's been out of stock at least once before this, it goes in waves as someone writes a notable review and then they sell through the 1000-2000 copies (I'm guessing) with each print run.

I haven't actually read up on the Legendary expansion. Does it change the coop in any significant way? I still don't have reason to own it, comic book art doesn't sit well with my wife, and after looking at it, doesn't sit well with me anymore either.

Actually just got a chance to play with the new sentinels of the multiverse expansions. Played verse the ennaed, iron legacy, and Akash'bhuta. Akash'bhuta was a nightmare, we were playing with only with three heroes so we just didn't have enough firepower. The board was filled most the time with enemies. The Ennaed were fairly easy. We just hit them very hard very fast. Iron legacy whommped on us so hard the room spun. Didn't even get close. First loss.

I'm loving it. It's also great how everything fits into the original box. I definitely recommend waiting for another reprint. I do remember before I bought the main set, looking at all the marvel and dc versions. Overall gameplay wise they looked so much less interesting the sentinels did. Which is sad as I would love a version of sentinels of the multiverse with heroes I know.

In a game of Rex...

Especially this guy.

Crossposted from the Michigan thread:

Good outing today with Jon, Jow, Cpt and myself.

Race for the Galaxy - The first game we played (sans Jon) I edged out Jow with my sick all genetics all the time strat, replete with the 6 point development to boot. Jow almost caught me with a good alien strat. Cpt lagged way behind, but it was his first game. He must have learned something because when we played our second game later on (now with Jon), he crushed us all with his ability to settle two planets at once.

in between the games of Race, we picked up our Risk: Legacy game...

Risk Legacy - With my stupid placement in Siberia, it was Jon's Australia (he gets Australia every game it seems like) vs. Cpt's South America vs. Jow's North America. Cpt and Jow fought each other while Jon reaped the reward of the super OP faction that gets one troop per round on its own HQ. So OP is that faction that it's won all three games so far, from a variety of starting positions. Just ridiculous. Anyway, Jon crushed many skulls and renamed Australia to something or other.

Guildhall - Instead of playing the game shop's Quarriors, I went and bought a $30 game! Guildhall is a fun game of set building, hand management, and a bunch of trading and other manipulation powers that let you steal your opponents' cards and generally mess them over quite hard. We had quite a nailbiter with Cpt pulling it out by two points over me after the game was given second life when the one vp card he needed to go out on the nose was snatched by Jon. You can be really diabolical and pile on people in this game if you want to

It looks like there is a stand alone, integrate-able expansion I'm going to have to pick up...

I was out of town the last few days with my family, and we got some gaming in:

Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin We had a good time with this deck builder. I liked the improvements from the prior version - so much so that I probably will get rid of it (I know you can mix the sets, but the OCD part of me shudders at the thought). We got stuck at one point with a wilderness full of tough monsters, but the level 3 sorceress ability to immediately destroy a rank 1 monster helped out.

Tokaido My kids had some difficulty picking up the strategy on this one, and it really didn't grab them. It's the type of game that does not favor differing skill levels, which often occurs when playing with children. By the end, two of them were wandering off, and had to be called back when it was their turn. It seemed interesting, but I'll probably try it out again with them in a few years.

King of Tokyo A perennial favorite. My daughter was quietly amassing points, and made it into Tokyo. She then had enough energy to get the card allowing her another turn. She rolled 4 fists, wiping out myself and my eldest son, and she was sitting at 19 points. My middle child then managed to roll the three fists to knock her out and win the game. Epic finish.

7 Wonders Another game we all enjoy. This time it was myself, my wife, and my two sons. We had two tight games, and I must say that the scoring app on the iPad is great.

Hearts We were at a restaurant, and my kids wanted to play a game, but I did not have one with me. I went to the gift store and bought a deck of cards, and my wife and I taught our boys Hearts for the first time. They loved it. We ended up finishing our game when we got home. My eldest son ended up shooting the moon on our last hand, which made him very happy, even though he did not win - that honor was bestowed upon my other son. I predict we will be playing this game again soon.

Kaosball seems really fun, but GOD DAMN the female models are really... ugh...

And my daughter really digs the game too, so I'm probably in. But JESUS GUYS COME ON.

Have we talked about Quarriors much? 'cause I've been playing it recently and I'm really diggin' it!

I love any game that allows you to roll huge fistfuls of dice.

Ha, I JUST ordered that.
