What the hell is wrong with Steubenville, OH?

Fang just labeled her an "extremely wealthy athlete" but she grew up in Compton and her older sister was killed in gang violence.

But she has been living a life of luxury for 10 or 15 years?

She moved to a tennis academy in Florida my when she was 9 years old. Serena and Venus didn't grow up in Compton, they grew up in a wealthy private academy before being homeschooled in the same neighborhood.

Vector, Christmas is over!

Or, as I said, this is her publicist not doing his/her own job to vet interviews and see the final copy.

Her publicist's job is to get Williams *into* Rolling Stone. Their job is to do everything possible so their client gets in the media to promote the Serena Williams brand, not throw up roadblocks in front of reporters.

Publicists don't get to ask a journalist for an advance list of questions they're going to ask (the journalist won't even know) and they certainly don't get to demand final copy before print.

The only thing that might have saved Williams would have been rigorous media training, but that would have left her talking a corporate spokesperson who simply read answers that were drafted by the legal department. And that doesn't work when you're trying to promote a brand that is a person.

Williams immediately reaching out to the family of victim, admitting fault, and apologizing is exactly what a good publicist does. It's pure PR crisis management. It acts like a fire break in a wildfire.

Admitting fault and apologizing straight away removes the fuel from the media sh*t storm and it simply burns out in a cycle or two. It's really hard to claim there's a controversy when the person who screwed up admits to screwing up and the person who should be offended most accepts the apology. It simply becomes a non-story.

So what ever became of the victim?

You know she could have said "I have a busy schedule and haven't been able to follow that case." probably wouldn't even make print.

Or maybe she is a real person and said something stupid. Between the media and friends, she was set straight in a way most of us hope our discussions do here. Then, because her fame causes her words to matter more, she reached out to who she offended and made a heartfelt apology that was graciously accepted.

Or maybe she should learn to keep her mouth shut. You choose.

Christmas is never I over when I'm around, baby!

Four Steubenville City Schools employees were indicted by a grand jury as part of a larger investigation of the rapes.

The superintendent was charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. The school's assistant football coach was charged with allowing underage drinking, obstructing official business and making a false statement. Two other employees--a principal and strength coach--were charged with failure to report child abuse.

Last month another school employee, the IT director, was charged with charged with tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.

Ugh. Why had I not heard about this already, given how long it's been known about: Uncovered Tweets May Reveal Yet Another Alleged Gang Rape Of Teen Girl In Steubenville (Eve Vawter, Mommyish, 2013-02-04)

The place where it came up again recently: Why Is No One Talking About the Second Steubenville Rape Case? (Katie J.M. Baker, Newsweek, 2013-11-27)

I had no idea there was a second rape. Thanks for posting that.
