Xbox One Catch-all

Because I just don't care in the slightest about the rest of the stuff everybody's been flipping their friggin wigs over.

I don't see how they could do it for discs but they could still have that system for downloaded games. I would be OK with that.

I don't want to touch discs. I want to install them once, and then just... press a button to play the game. One of my favorite things about Steam on the PC is NOT SCREWING AROUND WITH DISCS.

You have no idea how much I was looking forward to that feature.

Yeah, I'm disappointed that I can't play without the disc now...

Which will actually drive me to try and buy digital versions of the games! So this will move me more down the Steam-Bone path, as it turns out.

+1

It's gonna be crap when all the people flipping out, and cheering now, still don't buy an XBO, but those that do have lost the benefits we thought we were getting.

Me three. I was actually quite excited about the possibilities.

Is that a policy? All games day and date as digital downloads?

If so, fine, whatever, it's all good.

If Nintendo can do that as a policy so can MS.

No, I haven't read that anywhere, I'm speculating - but I think that's likely.

I did not mean to imply that it would be day one or anything. I buy plenty of games later in their life cycles, and there are tons of downloadable games already, but y'all all know that.

I don't see this as a black-and-white, all-or-nothing issue. MS can easily implement 30 day online check-ins for installed games or insert a disc to validate offline.

They're just failing miserably in their messaging. They never clearly demonstrated the overall benefit to the consumer - which indeed there were some. Between this issue and not demonstrating the advantage of Kinect, maybe the XB1 needed another year to cook?

That was already part of the bargain. What I will miss is the ability to share games.

Yes, and Microsoft was running some games at E3 on dev kits rather than finished hardware.

That's the biggest non-story of E3. Both Sony and MS games were running on a variety of hardware, including PCs. Which is normal even when new hardware isn't coming out.

Jayhawker wrote:

Awesome.

Hopefully the sharing thing stays an option as long as the game is a digital download. That would be a nice bonus to buying that way.

Either way, I'm good now. Time to abandon ship on this thread again

This is why we wait on preordering consols.

I think waiting on anything brand spanking new is generally a great idea. Let's them have time to work out the kinks and junk

Did they say there were removing that? They may still use that system with downloaded games considering there is the shared gold account.

Best of both worlds for Microsoft if they keep that sharing system and it drives digital purchases.

If they do, and if they're really ditching the DRM as is being reported, the sharing of digital games could actually be a feature that drives some sales.

What would be cool is if they opened up digital sales to others like Amazon, kind of like they did for awhile on XBLA games. Then you could also add some competition to day one sales as well.

The page with the updated info either isn't up yet or it is being bombarded... not loading for me.

And the link off that page to the update has killed the servers. Which is funny to me.

Should've hosted the site on Azure

Something amusing from Twitter:

"well if microsoft's site can't handle the traffic on a f*ckING NEWS STORY i guess it's good their console doesn't need to be ALWAYS ONLINE."

As quickly as Microsoft flipped, you have to know there were some serious corporate politics going on behind the scenes. Crazy for it to switch this fast.

Obviously a sign that Microsoft isn't up to the challenge of running a huge Internet service! Outages like these are unacceptable! I'm going PS4 now.

The page isn't up yet.

How can I trust Sony after they bricked my PS3 with the latest firmware update?? Gah, back to the Wii for me.

I believe it was up, but killed the whole site. None of news.xbox.com is working now.

Good point. Well, I still have my N64.

Yeah, giantbomb isn't working either.

Wow, kind of unreal how quickly they flip flopped on almost everything. Projections must have been looking pretty dire.

This should be fun to watch play out!

To be fair, they didn't have to worry about overloading the servers on launch day given the One's original popularity ;)

Zing!

EDIT: I wonder if the Jimmy Fallon segment has anything to do with the policy change.

This is what I get when opening news.xbox.com right now

Same here. The page/site is trying to load but failing hard due to the heavy traffic. Fun times.
