Fallout: New Vegas - Fall 2010

I've played every Fallout, even each time I've replayed them, as super shooty guy. I just love shooting things in Fallout.

I never played stealthy in the Fallout games, but always have in the Elder Scrolls games. The result is that I've never used companions (or even horses) in ES games, but I couldn't imagine Fallout games without them. Maybe because of the originals? Or maybe the desolation just demands you partner up with people to stay alive?

Perhaps because I play stealthy, I don't usually like companions. I've felt I'm missing out on some fun by not interacting with them more, but my experience tends to be FUUUUUUUUUUUU AI.

Spoiler:

Cf. I took the BoS chick in FONV and she died trying to kill Caesar's assassins who were after me. I used range weapons and (eventually) survived. She used a Power Fist and eventually did not.

Damn it. I'm a junky for FO{3, NV} but when it became so obsessing my work suffered I kind of got burnt out. Maybe...I can just play a little bit, right?

You haven't played a Fallout game until you've played it Melee. It's hilarious! After playing with guns, it's also unbelievable that it even works.

I played my one Skyrim playthrough as a melee cat person who just punched the crap out of everyone. Then I got a huge dragon shield and laughed as people attempted to harm me. I punched many a dragon.

I'm always happy to see this thread pop back up. My final Fallout New Vegas mod, Chapter Three of Tales from the Burning Sands, is almost ready. I'm waiting on some voice acting work, and I'm doing a final round of bug hunting. I'm going redo the mod description with some hand-drawn stuff, as there's precious little of that on the Nexus. Here's a preview of some of my elementary-school-grade-art caliber drawings! That's not me trying to draw like I was a child with no talent - that's me drawing to the best of my abilities.

Unless fate deals the Moose a cruel hand, I'm hoping to have Chapter Three ready to download next month.

Stealth / melee was stupid OP in FO3.

I'll definitely check this out. Glad to see this post.

There's some serious Perks for stealth melee, but in terms of stealth I've only ever done Stealth Sniper/Spray 'n' Pray Close Up. Companions don't detract from this style at all, but I imagine you'd have to leave most of em behind if you're going Stealth Back Stabby.

Very, very satisfying silenced sniper headshots to be had, with slow-motion splatter and fairly graphic sounds. You can turn those off if you don't like them...

But why shoot them in the head if you weren't hoping for that?

Shiiiii! Time to re-load New Vegas! Puce's mods are incredible!

Puce, those drawings are perfect, considering the story of The Chef. Don't change a thing!

Probably because all the characters in every Bethesda game are completely bland and indistinguishable from everyone else. Makes it hard to care one way or the other.

I'll probably remember the characters from Mass Effect until the day I die. I'd be hard pressed to name 5 characters from New Vegas and I'm literally playing through it right now.

I should have held back on posting this here.

Now I'm 100 hours or so into the game, on the verge of finishing. Unlike FO3, there are some memorable characters for me in this game. The survivalist's story in Honest Hearts was particularly affecting.

But where I think Obsidian particularly excelled is in world design. Every single location in the main game seemed to have a logical purpose for being there. There weren't any long, tedious subway stations or giant factories. All the minor factions and towns had plausible back stories and I had a sense that they interacted with the each other. And of course they all played some role in the central conflict of NCR vs. Legion vs. House, which was well done. Overall I consider it a big improvement over FO3 and I hope Obsidian gets to make another one someday.

This is the internet done right.

Chapter Three is almost done, boys and girls. I hope the image brings back good memories for a few folks.

Ha! Awesome! Talk about coming full circle.

Alright! Chapter Three is now available for download. It's my final project for New Vegas, and it represents about two years of work. I hope you guys enjoy it!
Chapter Three starts in the same way as the first two chapters - head to the Saloon in Goodsprings and check the help wanted terminal.

Tales from the Burning Sands All Three Chapters

Whew! Time for a Moose to celebrate tonight.

I so can't wait to get the Fallouts on my PC. It's the whole reason I built it, and especially to mod it.

Congratulations!

I'm going to have to reinstall NV and start a new character now.

I restarted NV after finishing Project Brazil Pt1, been just screwing around doing random bits, so I'll probably take a look.

It's weird what you end up playing some times, I feel I've got enough out of NV, there's nothing significant left to uncover in the game, I've got other things to play, but I still go back to it. Perhaps it's the type of game it is, I did the same with Skyrim for a while.

I went back to New Vegas after a long hiatus today. Yep, still feels way too cluttered. Might have to give your mods a shot, Moose, since the stuff that comes in the box doesn't interest me the way Fallout 3 did.

What I really want is for them to release Fallout 4 already. Seems a bit sci-fi, yeah, but post-apocalyptic New England with robots sounds way more interesting to me than Gladiator Vegas.

This will sound cheap, but the GOTY versions of each of FO 3 and NV are on sale on Steam for $5. I built a PC recently primarily to play these with mods. I can justify getting only one. I enjoyed each.

One way I could decide is to figure which has the most interesting mods available. I'd really like to see what Puce Moose had done with narrative. I also want to try my hand at the GECK.

Is there sufficient differentiation to make my choice easier?

FO3 was more stable (less crashes), but FO:NV has more references to the first two Fallouts. If you haven't played either of the first games, I'd go with FO3. Puce made mods for that too. Link

Yeah, I started looking through those mods. I spent ~120-130 hours in the Capital Wasteland finishing the main and almost all side quests. I spent ~200 hours in NV and haven't finished the main quest. The former I played with my wife, the latter almost exclusively solo. Maybe that's a good reason to go FO3.

NV was less stable? I figured they ironed 'em both out more or less identically. I played each on PS3, though.

And then NSMike solves the problem with a thoughtful and super-timely gift!
Thanks, NSMike!!!?()$6$

$5 bucks? My rig could handle NV but only played it on PS3 as my wife's platform of choice. Damn if that isn't tempting.

Ok, my FO:NV stopped working correctly. I can launch it just fine, but when i get in, my mouse and most of my keyboard don't work. I tried verifying the cache, but even though it says it re-downloads the corrupt file, the game still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

1. If your keyboard functions on the main menu, use it to navigate to Options, from there to Controls, and see if 360 Controller is enabled. Disable it.

2. If it isn't, try going to C:\Users\*yourwindowsusername*\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV - Ensure the game is closed, and then delete "Fallout.ini" and "FalloutPrefs.ini". Be careful not to delete the entire folder, as this is where your savegame files are. When next you start the game, you'll have to reconfigure resolution etc.

3. Repeat the first step.

4. Still no? Are you using any mods that might be conflicting?

People who prefer FO:3 to FO:NV? What manner of blasphemy is this? There's a whole thread for this kind of insanity.

I can only wonder how it must feel to be so incredibly wrong....

Not to contaminate the thread, but I still think the setting of FO:3 is far superior. Not going to speak to anything else about it, though the setting is a huge part of the game's appeal.

To be honest, I liked the Enclave. I felt that NV missed some of the really awesome threats because it didn't have the Enclave. The engine in NV is more refined and I loved the weapon mods, but I really wish it had that bigger overall enemy. The dudes in skirts just didn't cut it for me.
