ArcheAge: Catch-All

So, basically you just milk cows during your playtime? Gotcha

Anyway, what game do you feel the combat is closest to. Tough to tell from those videos.

The state it's in now with the heavy CC it's probably the closest to SWG pre-cu

Ran, did you see my last post on the previous page?

Can you tell us more about the ship combat? Like for instance how expensive are ships and how fast do they build? Did one of your guys teleport in a ship at the end that you guys jumped to so that you could demolish the battered stolen ship you were on?
Or was that an enemy ship that was not well guarded.

Are the ships guns fired by the players on board? Are the sails just a toggle or do they provide some sort of benefit? What kind of xp do you get for ship battles?

Isn't there friendly fire in this game?

Totally missed it...

There's different tiers of ships.

Row boats, speed boats, trade ships, galleons, Black Pearl

Row boats: Everyone gets one from a quest. The other ships are crafted and depending on the blueprint have 1 or 2 different configurations. The Black Pearl has the same or close to the same material requirements as the galleons, but the blue print for it is a very rare drop and sells for around 1.1kg in the AH.

The speed boat is relatively easy to build (i have one). You have to have the materials 1 pack of wood 1 pack of ore and 1 pack of cloth. 1 pack = 100 refined item. 1 refined item = 3 unrefined. You also need some extra wood to build the rack/frame the boat is built on and then it's just a matter of loading the building frame with the correct materials in the proper order. Takes a bit due to the fact that you can only carry one pack at a time and you move REALLY slow with a pack (slower than a walk). Trade boat X3 the materials of a speed boat and galleons around X5.

With the economy the way it is the materials, if you bought them, really isnt that expensive. Around 15g(or less) for a 1 pack of materials.

Once a ship is built you get an item in your inventory and the ships are spawned/despawned by clicking on the item. Ships can be destroyed, but there's items you can buy from a general vendor that will restore a broken ship.

(FYI that pvp video was from a different server and not our guild)

In ship combat you have cannons that are effective in destroying other ships. Player spells do damage, but it's very small compared to cannons. What you saw in that video was a group that attacked players on a boat. Killed the boat owner and for awhile took control because you cant despawn when your in combat and it takes some time for a boat to despawn after the owner dies. What's cool about the video was them using it for as long as they could and taking over the next one before the one they're was going to despawn.

While this is still fun it highlights one of the frustrations some of us have with the game. With it trying to straddle the fence between hardcore/nonhardcore the economy is suffering. No one loses their equipment. Only thing that is up for grabs in ship battles are from people doing trade routes and their trade packs can be taken. The only thing that was lost in that video was pride.

One of the dominant class builds right now is called Grim Reaper. It's a combination of Magic/Death/Calling(vocation) The combos between Magic and Death make their AoE attacks super brutal.

Personally i'm running Calling/Wild/Death. Not sure of the build's name, but i'm focused on high crit range with a bow and use the combos between Calling/Wild to build up my crit rates, and death magic for crowd control and extra damage.

FYI i suspect that the class called 'Calling' or 'Vocation' will be westernized into something else. It's the assassins class. It has mix of range/melee attacks along with stealth and backstab abilities.

fyi here's a video of one our guys with the Grimreaper build dishing out some damage.

I keep forgetting that Trion is handling the US release, and I have a fair bit of confidence in them because of the care they are taking in establishing a strong reputation for themselves.

Ouch; the things that bug this guy are things that would likely bug me too.

ArcheAge release version review

However, I still hope that depending on how much control Trion has over the NA version, they could still make improvements. The sandbox bits sound the most disappointing compared to other sandbox games.

We've been raking this guy over the coals on this one. He just admitted to not truly putting much time into this. It was obvious from the way he wrote it because some of his complaints were wrong and some of the more important or high profile problems were left out. Not to mention in the article itself he talks about getting the opinion of someone in general chat.

Do you have a good counter-summary you would recommend to read that addresses the concerns he raised? Still very interested in how the game turns out since many of its ideas appeal to me.

I do but in a training boot camp so most free time is spent studying. Over the course of next week ill go over the counters. As you may notice from my earlier posts the game isn't without it's faults

No problem, I'm in a busy project phase at work so I totally understand. I'll keep an eye out for your posts, thanks for the replies!

I'll do this in chunks... catching up is a Female Doggo.

One of the first thing he talks about is the combat. While i admit that the animations seem a bit off and typical for a mmo they all flow together well. Some of the things he's knocking stuttering, standing in place for abilities are either due to lag which granted even with a vpn connection it's not good or just not there at all anymore. The video and some of the things he talks about are from beta which just another point to show that he's going at that article mainly from second hand.

Plus the skill system involving the combat is very in depth. Here's a picture of all the different combos between schools from the end of Beta (russian). It allows for some very nuanced play and originality although there's still folks who are doing the flavor of the month builds

where were we?

Oh yea skills and combat. There's no individual CC that locks you down for 30secs. You have 120 different class combinations with thousands of combo posibilities so there's no lack of strategy involved.

He then goes on about the graphics and realism kick. I've not seen Crysis 3 yet, so i wont say all games, but this is the best looking MMO i've seen to date. This is based off a KR fantasy novel so there's no intention of trying to be realisitic. It's from that world so not sure what that guy was thinking or writing about.

Next is about the nature of the sandbox and economy.

They're trying to make this a blend between a sandbox and a thempark. You're free to do and go wherever you want but there are quest and quest hubs that need to be attended to in the process. The housing is fun and building your own stuff, gear, ships, tractors adn the like is fun. Main problem here is the economy. This is probably one of the biggest problems and can probably take up a whole thread discussing it.

Patch this week just adjusted the prices on the goat hair and milk so we wont see farms with nothing but cows and goats anymore, but while that's a plus they added a skill to boats that made it almost impossible to pirate peoples ships. There's still no true money sinks in this game so the primary commodity is time and that not a good thing. This is just the tip and his article barely mentioned this stuff.

Sound... this one i'll give him, but i suspect this is a culteral thing. There's some of the same sounds in this that i've heard in other KR mmos.

He then tries to compare Trion publishing this against what happened to Tera which is completely unfounded considering the companies involved. They dont line up at all in comparison and doesnt indicate what happened with one will with the other.

I do know from talking with the Trion community manager that they seem to be doing all the proper steps to make it work for the NA launch. With Trion's track record there's no reason to think otherwise. Of course we need to remember that ultimately that changes and development of the game is in XLgames hand's.

Depending on what XL games ultimately does with some of the few game changing flaws will determine just how successful this game is and until then there's no reason to ignore this game.

That 'review' didnt discuss most of those flaws and slightly skimmed the ones it did touch on. The rest was second hand bullsh*t by someone that put very little time into the game.

English language podcast.

pvp video of someone making good use of the Cleric build. Not the normal FOTM build (may change though)

I sincerely hope that bunny hopping like that isn't actually a battle tactic that makes the hopper harder to hit but is rather something that hyperactive nutjobs engage in for their own amusement.

tab targeting so it doesnt matter. Some guys just cant stop the habit

Ok, that's what I was hoping.

The primary English forum site for AA has spawned a podcast call the ArcheAge Report. It's teh forum's admin and an enthusiastic German that goes over all the updates that are currently happening in the KR.

When i get some more free time i'll start updating the OP because a lot of things have changed or were wrong and i didnt discover that until i actually played some myself. No word yet on the NA launch.

There is leaked news that the Chinese game will be f2p. Obviously this doesn't automatically mean there is a greater chance the US game will be f2p. Here's hoping!

Most games in China seem to be f2p. Their beta also starts next month. The odds of this being f2p here in NA are slim.

There may be more about this and makes it seem like this might end up with more weight behind the NA launch.

In KR the month of May will be F2P. The main thing it seems is that as a f2p player you dont regen your labor pools (which is required for crafting) and have to buy items to recharge them in 500 chunks (you max out at 3k)

Interesting development...

Trion stated at E3 they're still deciding, but AA will be going F2P in KR starting in July.

It is going F2P in Korea in July. I would say the odds just went up a whole bunch.
