Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

I'm surprised there isn't more discussion about this first person multiplayer melee game because it is hilarious and awesome.

I own. I did the tutorial and played a match. Then I got a job...

The melee combat is extremely satisfying. The ranged less so because of the speed of the arrows and difficulty hitting moving targets. It may get interesting if you can develop bowman skills because the armor coverage is accurately modeled and neck shots are instant kills.

I'm not sure about the rank up system. It's pretty opaque but you can unlock custom helms and new weapons.

Free weekend is on, who's interested in some friendly fights on Sunday?

friendly? I'm chopping some heads off!

Send me an invite and i'll play!

I am loving the crap out of this. I had to buy it.

I'm very busy these days but it's a very good for quick pick up play.

If my server is ever not full, you guys can play on it. The name is 'Arena 24/7'

Had fun with the free weekend.

Just don't if I should throw 12,50 at that game when I think this game should be 10$ at base price...

I can't be the only one who thinks ending a weekend deal mid-day Sunday is a terrible idea. Here I was, going to enjoy the rest of my night hacking dudes. Instead, I waste my time searching through my games list to no avail, only to discover I missed the mark by hours. I think I remember this happening to me once before. This isn't a recent thing, right? They do midnight unlocks for released games, how much trouble is it to do a similar thing for trials?

I'm going to look at some kitty pictures now.

Anyone else playing this? I'm playing pretty much every free moment I get. I picked it up on the free weekend and have over 50 hours played already!

This is the most fun I've had in multiplayer since Left 4 Dead, wish I had some Goodjers to enjoy it with!

I just played this with a few buddies. Some guy was annihilating everyone with just fists. Does anyone know a counter to that while using a weapon? He basically won every fight, even when he was outnumbered.

As I remembered the tutorial, you could kick him to get him off balance, and then swing at him. tried it?

How do you kick? I literally jumped in and started fighting against my buddy without checking anything in the game.

Press F to kick

Oh, so, do you know how to stick and thrust your weapon then?

There are many attacks as well done with your mouse movement and middle button.

Yeah, I found the variant attacks. I've tried to kick a few people, but it seems like you can stun lock people in this game somewhat easily with fast weapons. Most of the time when I try to kick they attack so fast that nothing happens and I just get killed. So far I've been using the claymore weapons and trying to get kills with archery. I have not used the heavily armored knight yet.

Got it too. This is soooo much fun. I love the depth of the combat system.

This is a LOT of fun... Shoot me an invite if people jump into play

Anybody still playing this? It's $8.50 on the Uplay sale. I keep being tempted to buy it.

LFG Chivalry players who want a good time.

You were nice enough to gift it to me; I'll gladly play with you. Who else would like to kill mannes at a time in the near future?

send me an invite when you start to play. If i'm able i'll jump in.

Is there a steam group?

I could be a meat shield while a level up...

Invite me!

I've been very much enjoying killing mannes. This game is a blast!

I bought this and haven't jumped in yet, either, but am ready to do so if we get a group together.

Chivalry is my most played game! If you hop on, check the friends tab of the server filter, I'm probably on!

You'll find archers or MAA using small weapons really quickly but it is stoppable. It's just one of the easier tactics to do that is not so easy to defend against.

I mostly play as a Knight so here's a detailed description of my play style and tactics:

Main weapon: Sword of War (first unlocked from the bastard sword line)
- This is slightly faster than the other two handed swords, it's recommended for stabbing and overhead swings
- I use this when in any group encounters or 1 on 1 with Knights and Vanguards
- I use ~70% stab attacks which have good speed/range and low chance of hitting a teammate
- Combination attacks are good and bad. Your second attack comes faster but your recovery time is longer.
- Learning to block with a weapon is essential. I'll write more about blocking below.
- Horizontal attacks are almost never used. Alt Horizontal attacks are only used slightly more often because they’re so unexpected.
- Keep opponents with shorter weapons at a long range. Fast SoW stabs are highly effective when an opponent is lunging in for an attack.

Secondary: Falchion (first unlocked from sharp line)
- Faster weapon that still has decent damage
- I use this when in 1 on 1 encounters with Archers or MAA to make up for some of the speed difference
- Combination stabs are fast and usually work when an MAA dances out of the first attack, they’ll often dance in at the second stab.

Special: Throwing Axe (Ranged version of Hatchet)
- I like to have a range option when injured enemies run faster than my heavy armor
- You can’t block with this weapon so it’s important to never find yourself in melee range

Blocking:

-When blocking keep the tip of your enemy’s weapon in the center of your screen. If you’re standing on top of each other this could mean you have to turn your view 90 degrees or straight up.
- Blocking is mostly dependent on location/direction of your block. If your timing is slightly off the game will often still give you the block if your location is correct.
- All attacks can be blocked, lots of people complain about impossible blocks but they are possible if you have stamina
- All attacks and blocks cost stamina. If your stamina is low your block recovery is slower. If your stamina is empty you are staggered after blocking. Your attacks are also slowed when stamina is low or empty. This means it’s never a winning strategy to block repeatedly.
- Always use counter attacks after blocking. This is done by initiating an attack immediately after the block. Your attack comes much sooner and consumes less stamina than blocking + regular attack. I almost always follow up a block with an overhand.
- It’s best to keep moving when going into blocks. If you’re in control of where you are in relation to the opponent you can anticipate where the weapon will arrive.
- You can cancel any attack that’s less than 50% through the animation by pressing Q or block. In this way you can do two important moves: recovery blocking and feints
- Recovery blocking uses more stamina but is good if you know your attack isn't going to complete because an opponent swung first.
- Feinting makes an opponent think you’re attacking before your swing actually comes so their block is early.
- Only use feinting in 1 on 1 situations when the opponent is acting defensively. Otherwise your recovery is slower and stamina is wasted.

Fighting 2 opponents at once:

- Keep opponents on the same side of each other
- Stay aggressive, blocking two attacks is near impossible and your stamina won’t keep up to theirs
- When you land an attack on one opponent the second almost always lunges in. This is the most effective moment for combination attacks.
- When you block an opponent the second almost always lunges in. This is the most effective moment for counter attacks.

Fighting 1 opponent vs. 2:

- Keep your teammate within your view and never very close
- If your teammate is aggressive stay back and wait for an opportune lunging stab
- If your teammate is defensive use a combination attack to hold the opponent for two attacks

Nice tips, thanks. I will have to load this game up again. Lots of fun!

archery tip: the arrow doesnt release when you click your left mouse button but when you release it. I'll click on it and then track my target and then release to fire. Much easier to time your shots this way.

Holy crap, played my first live match and it is fun and unreal what you get to see/hear on the battlefield! Someone screaming for over a minute burning alive; a boulder crushing your enemy just as you moved out of the way; accidentally TKing because you forgot what team Random put you on...

*cough*
