Summer Pile, Happened So Fast

Pages

Welcome to the hot summer months. E3 is around the corner and new consoles have been announced. It's time to knuckle down on this generation's pile games, because Sony and Microsoft have so graciously removed backwards comparability in the new ones.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

[size=30]Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People[/size]

"Charming. Suave. Muscular. Awesome. These are just a few of the words that Strong Bad would use to describe himself. In a world gone mad, only one man can be trusted to save the day... for himself. A man with a mask. And boxing gloves. And an attitude. A man called Strong Bad. " (Telltale Games)

I did pretty bad on last month's pile. :/

With Skyrim, Last of Us and SimCity all coming my way soon I won't have too much time to work on my older stuff. So for this month I'll just declare Journey (PS3) and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (Multi) and see how it goes from there.

Same here.

Although I fired up both Kingdoms of Amalur (PC, multi) and Red Dead Redemption (PS3, multi) in the last week or so. Didn't declare them as they're both so open I knew I wouldn't finish in a week. But might as well give it a try this month.

Starting easy, Strong Bad's first episode. We'll see how the rest goes.

I'm declaring Peggle Deluxe (Multi-Platform)! Because I only have 10 or 12 levels left. Whatever happens after that... we'll just see.

Failed again to get much done last month for various reasons, so going to tackle something different and go for The Testemant of Sherlock Holmes (multi) for starters, then see what other adventure games I've got sitting unfinished in the background.

I'm going to have to carry over Jeanne D'arc (PSP) into June. I am about 1/3 through so I might make it through this month.

Day 2 of the month, and the credits roll on Out of this World (aka "Another World") (SNES/multi). I think I first played this about 20 years ago and it was a very frustrating sort of love. The game is an amazing cinematic feat for its time and very memorable, but it's also maddeningly difficult with lots of cheap deaths that require trial and error. This wouldn't be so bad if dying didn't often involve having to replay several minutes of the game only to die at the same spot over and over again. Some of the puzzles are rather obtuse as well - at one point I was at a dead-end, fighting to stay alive for minutes, wondering where my rescue was! Turns out I had to shoot something numerous screens earlier so that he could actually come and save me. Hint book/videos required for those prone to rage.
The other downside is that the SNES version is rather choppy with laggy controls, which makes an already hard game far harder.

I'm still really glad I've finally played it, however!

Declaring for the month:
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams (PC and someday, multi) - my second released kickstarter game. Gorgeous and fun with amazing music anybody who owned a commodore64 is bound to adore. It's supposed to get fiendishly hard later. We'll see.
Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle (PC) - about time I get around to this.

Let's see how those go before declaring more, considering my last few months of failures.

*sigh* Mega Man Anniversary Collection (PS2/Multi) this month. Again.

This month I'll be conducting Space Diplomacy in Mass Effect (PS3, multi).

My primary goal this month is to prevent one of my recent games from becoming eligable for this thread. If I accomplish that I plan on attempting to work through Assassin's Creed 2 (Multi) and Bioshock 2 (Multi).

It's actually a tall order, since the said primary goal is a JRPG and I know I have two new games hitting this month that I'd like to jump into right away.

Going to start Okami (HD) today, and just got (I hope) Bioshock Infinite on ebay (thank you Video Game Deals Catch-All!)
Probably wont finish both this month, but ambitious plans on how to avoid the sun surely can't hurt.

Edit: Apparently not 3 months since Bioshock Infinite was released. Guess that one is out then.
At least for another few weeks.

Well, I've already started Mirror's Edge (multi) so I will finish that this month. My daughter and I will also be working on the adventure game Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People (pc). Other than that, though I've started a few games, I'm not sure how much I'll pursue them, so I'll be back to add more if, and when, I do

I'm going to carry over Dishonored (PC/multi). However, I'm 7 hours into what is supposedly a 10 hours game, but have only just finished the first mission, and not even back to the hub area yet. This one may take a while.

Carrying over Torchlight (PC) again, Saints Row 3 (multi) again, and adding Metro 2033 (multi). Hopefully i'll finish something this month. My pile's waistline expanded by seven games last month.

I'm a little bit into A Link to The Past (GBA), but totally digging something easy to play this month. Super Mario Bros Land 2 (3ds), Resident Evil: Revelations (3ds), Final Fantasy XIII-2 (multi) are still in shrink wrap and Yakuza 3(multi) which I'm a third into, I think will never be played again. And this is completely ignoring the indie space and my steam account which is just ridiculously long.

Gunpoint and Last of Us are coming this month. Which like a smuck, have already pre-ordered.

This month, it is:

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (Multi)
Mirror's Edge (Multi)
Bayonetta (Multi) -- And damn it, I am ACTUALLY going to beat it this month!

I put you down for all of those for June. If that's not correct, let me know.

List should be current.

A couple corrections (to aid Hemi), Torchlight has an XBL release, so it's multi. A Link to the Past is multi since it was originally a SNES release.

Also, did Motleyai mean New Super Mario Bros. 2, or Super Mario 3D Land? Probably NSMB2.

I have no idea what I'm going to play this month, except that I've picked Borderlands 2 back up, but I'm not sure I'll finish it since I have no idea how much more is left.

Thanks for the clarification. I've updated them. I always get Torchlight and Torchlight 2 confused as to which one is multi.

I'm going to give Puzzle Agent a shot this month.

Wait, what?!?! Guild Wars 2 counts? Cause I can declare that each and every month and consider it completed over and over!!

I did pretty well on the pile last month and hope to keep up that momentum!

Put me down this month for The Darkness 2!

I got through 10 levels of Peggle tonight, only 4 left, so there's a good chance I'll finish at least one game this month.

Adding two more for the hell of it... or three... they're short enough, so it should work out well, and since I needed something lighter in tone after a whole month and change of Demon's Souls, well...

Kung Fu Panda (multi)
Labyrinth Legends (PS3)
Sly Cooper HD (PS3)

I'm quite confident I'll make it through them all

Put me down for Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon (Wii). Thanks!

I'm going to roll over Max Payne 3 from last month. After that I'm back on the new game train until November (unless some of these new releases are super short). :/

If you're trying to get through every single game on there, it's no wonder!

Can't wait to hear what you think of this. That game's been in my pile so long that it started painting and changed its drivers license. Heck, I got rid of my Wii, and it's one of the handful of games I kept in anticipation of playing on the WiiU at some point...

Progress report on Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams
So far stages 1-1 through 1-3 were all pleasant platforming fun. Stage 1-4 is where the madness began with 30 deaths! I just completed Stage 1-6 after a "mere" 69 deaths! It truly carries on the tradition of its commodore64 ancestor.

...onward to level 2-1.

SCENE: A London Rooftop, Lestrade stands next to a makeshift spotlight shining the image of a smoking pipe against the smog-choked sky.

Sherlock: [taps the Sluth-signal] "Exemplary"
Lestrade: "I couldn't find any master criminals"

Sherlock: "Well Inspector..."
Lestrade: "You really started something, Anarchists running scared, a tiny fraction less misery on the streets"
Sherlock: "But?"
Lestrade: "We still haven't picked up You Know Who, or half the drunken comedy Russians in his employ."
Sherlock: "We will, we can bring London back"
Lestrade: "What about escalation?"
Sherlock: "Escalation?"
Lestrade: "We start carrying notebooks, they use over-complicated puzzle boxes, we start carrying lockpicks, they install ridiculously concieved locking mechanisms, and *you're* wearing a deerstalker and jumping off rooftops. take this guy: piracy, treason against the crown. Got a taste for the theatrical, like you. Leaves a calling card."

Lestrade presents Sherlock with an evidence bag containing what appears to be a slightly soggy playing card; Sherlock turns it over to reveal a crudely drawn cartoon of a submersible being attacked by a giant squid.

Sherlock: I'll look into it.
Sherlock: [turns away from Lestrade and walks toward the rooftop ledge]
Lestrade: I never said, "Thank you."
Sherlock:[looks back to Lestrade] And you'll never have to.....actually it would be nice once in a while.....in fact, yes do that. A lot.

aaaaaand SCENE.....

Er.. by which I mean I finished The Testemant of Sherlock Holmes.

LOL - I was going to count it being "completed" when I beat my personal storyline and dropkick Zhaitan. But we're all friends here, so if you want to count it each month I'm not going to judge!

Put me down please for:

Walking Dead
Saints Row 3
Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts
Guild Wars 2 - I'm back in and almost to 80, so might as well get credit for it

Well, last month I was thinking of finishing Yakuza 4. However, I ended up playing another 40 hours of Skyrim. You'll all forgive me, right?

So this month I won't be trying to kid myself. I'm going to try and finish the main quest of Skyrim (multi).
