I think it could be possible to do a good Superman film... but I still ask, why bother?

Because money.

Well clearly.

I meant more from an artistic point of view, clearly the Supes movies keep bringing in a profitable amount of people. Superman is the Mario of superheroes.

The best Superman stories, in my opinion, are the ones that force him to make moral choices, force him to question loyalties and friendships, and put his concepts of truth, law, and justice as odds with each other. See The Dark Knight Returns, but especially Kingdom Come.

So... you want a Watchmen Superman film?

Good news! We found a director for you...

Bump for trailer!

Much more excited for this now.

That was a really good trailer. I've been pretty indifferent about yet another Superman movie, but I'll definitely see this.

Huh. Well, I love Zack Snyder's visual work.

Yeah, that trailer tipped me over from being interested to excited and wanting this to be good. I think the main reason is because the trailer shows that Snyder might understand that one of the most interesting things about Superman is the fact that he's adopted. That he's alone. That he still leans on and relies on earthy parents. To me that's always been really the only emotional well to tap with Superman as a character.

Christopher Nolan producing makes me less wary of Snyder. It does look like it has the makings of a great story.

rumour going around that if this one does well they'll tap Snyder to do the Justice League movie.

As the father of an adopted son, I'm now extra stoked to take him to see this.

This is where my affinity for Superman comes from. I'm not as close to it as you are, but it's all over my life. Many of my closest cousins are adopted. My best friend is adopted. My wife and I, when we chose not to have children, did so in part because we knew that if we ever changed our mind we preferred adoption because of all of the kids who need and deserve a good home.

Superman isn't my favorite character for many of the reasons people often cite, but that aspect of his story, I feel, is very emotionally resonant.

Sadly, Superman doesn't seem to get it:

As Kevin Smith wrote, and it sounds right to me, "Batman is about angst; Superman is about hope." That that notion pops up at the end of the latest trailer is intriguing. Maybe that conflicted kind of storyline would be interesting in a later film, but it doesn't make a lot of sense for a reboot/origin story.

I pretty much hated most Superman stuff until I read the Superman stories in DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore.

No matter how much I prepare myself, I always tear up during that trailer. Every. Single. Time. Kevin Costner will be perfect as Pa Kent.

I wish there were a digital copy of that book somewhere legal. I would love to read it.

I'll probably end up going to the theater for this one.

Although it's dinged considerably for missing a story or two, most of it's on Kindle.

Here's a nice and short behind the scenes clip. Man of Steel

This is far and away my most anticipated movie of the year. So far, with the exception of the costume and prolific "fist clenched at sides stances", I've been very excited by what I've seen.

Is it a stance if it's just the prelude to a three-point takeoff?

Always loved this one:

Looking forward to this, but keeping my expectations low... then I'm not disappointed.

I really want to take my son (11 y/o) to this but after our Iron Man 3 experience (he was terrified of the orange glowy people) I'm a little gun shy about what PG-13 movies I take him to.

One last trailer before the official release. This looks freaking amazing!

Didn't Will Smith already make this movie?

I don't recall seeing one of his kids in the trailer, so I'm guessing not.

I'm going to be pretty crushed if this ends up sucking.

Well, now I don't need to see the movie. Why do I watch trailers any more?

For the journey, not the destination.

This is the one I'm talking about...

But who am I kidding, I'll take whatever they will give me!

Yeah but the movie is supposed to be close to three hours long, still MUCH goodness to be had.

Here's a nice little bit with Henry being interviewed by Leno, seems like a really nice guy. The clip has a previously unseen fight sequence between Superman and Zod just after the three minute mark if you're trying to maintain a blackout though.

I do feel a bit sorry for Brandon Routh though, I really liked him in Superman Returns though the movie was a bit dull.

Anyone see this yet?

I'm specifically asking if it is scary for kids. My son (11, but often emotionally younger) was freaked out by the orange glowy people in Iron Man 3 and we had to leave the theater. Now my wife and I are a little gun-shy to take him to the superhero summer blockbusters.

So has anyone seen this and is it dark and grim? Is it more The Dark Knight and less Superman 2?
