My first reaction too. Hopefully that's Celsius?

It's Winnipeg, so it's C. But if there's windchill, it could be -21 F too! Which a Winnipegger would probably consider "brisk".

Did 6.1 or 6.1.1 change the lock screen playback controls? Because one way or another, the skip back/next buttons have finally moved to the edges of the screen instead of being right next to the pause button. No more accidental skips when I only wanted to pause!

Yes it did, and I welcome this change with open arms.

6.1 moved it. This change should have been advertised as its ABOUT TIME! I cant believe how many podcasts and audio books ive skipped back to the beginning of because of this.

Ya its Celsius Its very warm atm in winnipeg. Almost need that extra sweater when you go out.

Downcast makes those buttons seek forward and back a chosen number of seconds. (I use 15s back and 30s forward)

Is Downcast still the podcast app of choice, or has something better come along in the last couple of months?

After putting up with Apple's Podcasts app for way too long, I've finally had enough.

I loved Downcast the whole time I was on ios (until 2 weeks ago).

Trying to find something as good on Android right now.

I use Downcast. Love it!

If you're still comfortable syncing podcasts from iTunes (I am), just remove the Podcasts app from the device. They'll reappear in the Music app. You will lose the ability to do on-device downloads, though.

I use Downcast since i got my phone, and I have never looked back.

Can I be the voice of dissent and suggest Instacast? I did try Downcast a while back but at that time it did not have 2x playback so I didn't switch. Also really like Instacast's ability to change settings at a individual podcast level.

Downcast has that too. They also keep adding features that make it more and more awesome. Maybe I'm an idiot and just missed it all this time, but I recently discovered the "Priority Play" feature which makes the playlist + priority sorting features all the more useful.

How does Pocketcast compare to Downcast...anyone here who used them both?
I already own Pocketcast and am loving it so far. But if there is a better one...I will switch.

I bought Downcast, and so far, it does everything I want it to do.

And in retrospect, it's weird that I hesitated so long over a $2 purchase.

I've used Pocket Casts for ages and have since tried most of the other apps, but I keep coming back to Pocket Casts. The interface and overall functionality is just a little bit better in Pocket Casts. That or I'm just more used to it.

So, iOS 7 is officially official. It is also very flat, and very, very Helvetica. Aside from the new look, features from the general announcement include self-updating apps, quick shortcuts to toggle settings from anywhere (wifi, bluetooth, do-not-disturb, etc), iTunes radio, and multitasing:

iOS 7 takes note of which apps are used on a frequent basis and it keeps those apps updated in the background. It has intelligent scheduling and opportunistic updates, such as when a user checks their phone throughout the day. It detects coverage signal and it responds to push notifications, giving the app time to update in the background, so that it will be up to date when it is open.

iTunes Radio seems to be similar to Pandora and integrated into the music app. It will be ad-free for iTunes Match subscribers.

That looks so much better. iOS has needed a style update for a very long time.

Agreed.. I like the new look.. as well as the functionality.. sure a good deal is catch up.. but when you are Apple you can afford to just play catch up and keep ahead on the physical side.

I'm looking forward to playing with iOS 7. Of the things Apple announced today, it's easily the one I'm most interested in.

(Although the new Mac Pro is quite a thing. Cubes didn't take, so now it's time to try cylinders!)

I have absolutely no need for a Mac Pro but I want one of those sooooooooooooooooooo bad.

By the way, I wouldn't say that the Cubes didn't take. The Mac Mini exists and it's basically just a shorter Cube.

I didn't like the color palette at all of the new icons and the color schemes of the apps in general. I did like all the refinements and updates though. I was hoping for integrated Flickr integration as was rumored. Also, did you catch that Siri will be searching Bing? Goodbye Google.

I'm also a little surprised that the update will go way back to iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

Siri will search Bing, and Wikipedia and Twitter, in addition to Google.

I have an iPad 2 and it did not handle the last update very well. I'm pretty surprised that it's supported for the next one.

I have a 4S out of contract with Verizon with the no-more-available unlimited data plan. Someone once said (probably on these boards) giving that up would be like killing a unicorn. I think I'm going to try to try to stay one generation behind and buy unlocked phones, at least to try LTE with unlimited data.

It's "supported" so you'll update and realize it's time to buy a new device.

You're right -- the G4 Cube was, in retrospect, a trial run for the Mac Mini. Apple has a certain history of trying out ideas before their time.

I was also expecting my iPhone 4 to be left out, and glad that it's included. Though I wouldn't be surprised if some features get locked out on older devices, like panoramic pictures are currently for iPhone 5 only.

According to CNet...

not all iOS 7 features will work with all of the aforementioned devices. The file-sharing service AirDrop, for example, will work only on the iPhone 5, the fifth-generation iPod Touch, the fourth-generation iPad, and the iPad Mini.

And while users with the iPhone 4 or later, third-generation iPad or later, iPad Mini, or fifth-generation iPod Touch will be able to use filters embedded in the photos app, only those with the iPhone 5 or the fifth-generation iPod Touch will get filter effects directly from the camera.

(I'm sure there are other nuances as well.)

I hope they add a gesture keyboard -- I've been alternating between iOS and Android. Overall I still prefer iOS but I LOVE Swype.

Small but nice update for me is that notifications will sync across devices. I hated clearing out Notification Center on my iPhone and iPad and had actually turned it off for most apps.

Apple always does that. Its very annoying but it's part of the way they add value to their new stuff. Overall I like the update although I was hoping for a better way to organize apps and layout. My Nexus 7 has spoiled me.

Well, at least you can have multiple pages within folders now.
