How is Heinlein visible in Halo?

Maybe the whole military as a dominant force in society thing?

For some reason I keep forgetting Starship Troopers, which is obviously influential to all space marines, especially armored ones.

It's a one-off for Heinlein's work; I think that's why I forgot it.

Pretty much, even though the only space marine power armor to remind me of Starship Troopers in video games is the stuff seen in Section 8 (or at least the trailers). From my understanding the Culture series (I believe that is the name) is the primary inspiration for Halo, followed by Ringworld by Larry Niven (more in setting than in narrative), and finally Starship Troopers.

I like the look of their sci-fi, from an age where everyone wasn't trying to make the future look like Apple owned everything.

Sounds to me like you're really looking for futuristic fantasy.

PS4 video announcement

I have pretty good feelings about this game, I really think bungie is trying to do something good here. I am looking forward to more info as it comes out.

Was at Best Buy and saw available for preorder.

They want me to preorder a game that doesn't have a release date or a price for that matter ($59 still hold?), for a console that doesn't have a release date or a price?

I'm sure its not the first time, but it just struck me as crazy.

Look at the alternative for Best Buy: people hear from someone about Destiny, they get to the store and none of the clerks know anything. Across the parking lot you can get an exclusive poster from Gamestop for putting down $5.

Also, it's been announced for 360 and PS3. So they're not just taking preorders for the PS4 version.

And as far as I know, it's only $5 to reserve a game there.

Finally, you can still preorder Final Fantasy Versus XIII from Amazon. It's been announced since 2006 and never got a date, but... maybe? The Last Guardian, as well.

I preordered from GameStop because the poster was pretty sweet. I love posters. $5 would be fine for one without the preorder.

I basically never preorder anything. Last time might have been Metroid Prime 2. There was a shirt.

Bungie's Destiny panel at GDC. Very interesting and gives you a great feel for what the game is going to be.

There's a new trailer out today.

Sorta cool and all, but I don't understand why there's wind on the moon.

"Fromthecreatorsofhaloandthecompanythatbroughtyoucallofduty" -- Marketing must love being able to put both those games in one text blip.

I thought it was kinda "meh". I still don't know enough about the world or its inhabitants for these kinda character-focused pieces to do anything for me. I guess it worked with Halo because I already knew that world, and so little spots focusing on little pieces like this were pretty insightful and exploratory.

But here I'm just grasping for anything concrete to attach wrap my head around in this game and I'm not getting a whole lot. I guess I'm more interested in the big picture since we know so little about that.

When Gustavo Fring orders me to Pay Attention, I do.

Oddly enough, it was the "sounds in space" that bugged me.

But I'll get over it. I'm hoping this captures all the things I loved about Halo co-op and turns it up to 11. And by Halo co-op I mostly mean 1, 2, and Reach.

Coincidentally, those are exactly the Halo games I've played.

I never finished the fight!

That scene looked like it was a generic night desert fight more than in space.

Just from the way people were running and moving. Or the moon is as massive as the Earth.

ODST had some pretty great co-op too.

Yeah, but ODST had Brutes instead of Elites, and thus is ultimately one of the lesser games.

This has me far more excited

I mean, anybody can google an image of Mars and see generally what Mars looks like, but you can't google an image of Mars and see an old, human city buried in the sand and off in the distance some alien war base that's coughing up big clouds of evil. And up in the sky, weird sky mines and like stuff on Phobos that you wouldn't otherwise see

This and the article reminded me of a section in the demo that actually impressed me. I think the whole Open-World Game thing is going to become more common with this next-generation of development, but where you had the CoD guys mentioning with next-gen you could "make fish swim away with you", I think Bungie knows how to really make the world feel alive.

When that Big Bad came in, it was cool seeing all the trees and structures in the distance fall apart. Then you got hit by the shock wave. Then birds in the distance took to the skies to fly away. THEN the Big Bad got closer and crashed.

It's small details, but just the right kind of small details.

Yup, I'm definitely interested in this game.

The whole MMO elements that are seamless into shooters seems to be a trend lately. Titanfall has that blend of story telling in multiplayer and The Division certainly showed that at the very end of the demo.

Sounds very promising.

Great article. It does sound good. I've never been able to keep up my enthusiasm for Halo multiplayer but I'd love a great Haloesque co-op experience, even with randoms.

I'm cool on the game at the moment but, I suspect, the more I learn the more I'll want in.

Evidently there's a new trailer out today. Still digging the game's aesthetic.

Love the look. The more it looks like an MMO the less interested I get. Probably good for my game life balance.

This is the only game I'm currently excited about and sure to get. Which platform, though? I guess if I have a PS4 or Xbone by the time it comes out, then it's going to be next-gen.

Hate the cover art, can't imagine it being more uninspired. And the guy has his back turned, which is just an instant turn-off for me. Also the same dude in the middle looks just like Master Chief from the new Halo reveal teaser. Ugh.

Preorders are up...early Beta Access...game is supposed to ship June 2014

After what we heard about The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite box-art, I wouldn't be surprised if Activision felt that one tested the best specifically for those reasons you hate it.

Though now that I think about it, box art is kind of a silly thing.

Heh, bet you someone's sitting there saying "You can't have Ellen Page on the box art for Beyond: Two Souls! She's a woman! It has to be Willam DeFoe!"

Except for them actually calling it a MMO they've said everything else that MMO shops say

Anyone else surprised that Bungie's pre-order offer (pre-order Destiny from select retailer and get access to the BETA) is only available if you buy the DISC.

One of the things that makes this coming generation so unique is that ALL games from day one will be available for download. Seems like a huge oversight not to offer BETA access if you also pre-order the game directly from Bungie for the platform of your choice.

I admit to being surprised how Halo-like everything looks and feels. I mean I guess it's to be expected given that's been their bread and butter for well over a decade, but it's still kind of shocking to me. To me that's not necessarily a bad thing -- I've bought both MS consoles on the strength of having a Halo title -- but even so it's mildly disappointing in a way.
