SimCity 5 Disappointment-All

There was a country club reward structure in SimCity 4. Does that count?

Now I really want a new version of Sim Golf.

Also I'm just wondering but how is the Sim City Mod scene? Is it enough to redeem what EA has done?

I don't really know - but I would wager the mod scene is pretty small. As I understand it, EA's version checking prevents people from playing the game with mods.

Huh, I learned something new today. I had SimCity 4 but I didn't see that. What I'm really wanting to do is plop down a course or two on my landscape.

Just got given this, what's the best way to get into it? I know there's a whole region thing where you can specialise your city, but I guess with a lot of people given up in the past few months, might be best not to be relying on other nearby players, so maybe make a more generalised city? Maybe they've got a mechanic to counter the people who aren't playing?

Is there any particular thing I should be reading to get started now? There's a lot of material around that was written before the game was released

You don't have to play in multiplayer at all. I'd suggest starting your own region - doesn't matter how big or small, really. Create your first city, and specialize it toward something that can help your future cities, such as mining, oil, or power. Then build a second city, focusing on something like education. The first city will get students that graduate from the second city, and allow you to mine, drill, or produce more efficiently and more cleanly. Then you will probably need a third city that will focus on something interesting, like tourism and commercial stuff.

Mod scene is pretty much dead. Check out Simtroplis. The interest is there but the game isn't friendly to it at all. Maybe in the future things will pick up but probably not until thy increase the city size.

I think it's handed out when the R$$$ population reaches a certain level. It's the first reward tied to R$$$, with the Private School being the next one.

Update 4.0 coming tomorrow. Is anyone still here?

http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/li...

Update 4.0 Notes

• New: SimCity Launch Park, an exclusive new park just for our dedicated fans who were early adopters.
• New: Region: Edgewater Bay. Seven city sites in one cluster around a beautiful bay with one great work site.
• New: Your current server will now be shown in the options menu.
• New: More detailed rollover information on buildings telling player’s if their Sims received happiness from a park or from shopping. Previous to this fix, this information was generic.
• Re-Enabled Feature: Global Market prices now dynamically change during gameplay.
• Re-Enabled Feature: Leaderboards are will be active on EU West 3, Pacific 1 and Pacific 2 at the release. We will enable them on additional servers throughout the day.
• Re-Enabled Feature: Region filters are now enabled on all SimCity servers. Players will be able to search for open games by Map Name, Sandbox Mode, and Abandoned Cities.
• Rain Clouds: Fixed an issue where some cities would not have rain clouds to replenish their water table. If you had a city with this issue, you will start seeing clouds again within a game day.
• Fire: Improved response time of fire trucks to fires. Improved the time it takes for a fire signal to reach a fire station.
• Mission updates: Tuned Metals HQ and Community College missions. These were appearing too early, making them difficult to complete. They now appear later in a city’s development.
• Solar Farm Great Work: Reduced fire risk at the Solar Farm Great work. Local fire engines were spending too much time at the Solar Farm.
• Messaging: Improved pre-requisite messaging for Trade Port, Casinos, Smelting Factory and Oil Refinery. It should be clearer on how to unlock these buildings.
• Graphics: Fix for flickering low wealth buildings on NVIDIA graphics cards.
• Education: Fix for an issue some cities experienced where commuting students did not return from a neighbor’s city. This was causing a problem where students would disappear from a city in some cases.
• Tuning: Sims will lose a small amount of happiness if they don’t have a place to shop. Cities without places to shop will see complaints and feel the effect of unhappy Sims. This will emphasize the importance of commercial zones.

Looks like they're trying to fix that all-residential city exploit.

Quintin_Stone wrote:

That was fixed in 2.0:

Residential Tuning: Residential-only cities have failure state.

I wish the patch notes were simpler: "the game will now work correctly" or "it's almost there. We still need to tune the traffic before the trolleys don't clog", etc.

Do the trolleys and buses still clog into chains and leave people waiting for days? I've not played in weeks.

Oh whoops. Missed that one.

I still haven't seen any patch notes about fixing game saves. I'm not coming back to the game if there's still a chance of rollbacks.

Yep! They just announced some information about it on Facebook and linked to their blog. And then it went down from traffic, I assume..

You can't make this stuff up.

Classic

For all of you who are still playing, ONE OF YOU JUST HIT THE JACKPOT!!!! Ok, not the jackpot but a code so you don't have to brush your teeth to get something free.

49WPXTVH3TB4

It says you have to go crest.ea.com, enter SWEEPSTAKES and redeem the code.

And that's it - EA released the Amusement Park DLC today for $10 USD:

http://store.origin.com/store/ea/en_...

I've been trying to be optimistic about this game, finding the good bits and latching on. But having a fundamentally broken game with continual game breaking/fixing updates and then releasing paid DLC when things still aren't working... that's just poor taste. It's like EA/Maxis isn't even trying.

I'll continue to play my hour-or-two a week, but I'll never buy any DLC for this game.

(Spit take) $10!? That's it, no more EA at launch for me. I've supported Maxis and SimCity through all of release stuff, but this is it.

I don't care if Shigeru Miyamoto and John Carmack work together on something. If it's EA, I'm waiting for a steam sale and metacritic. I got hit by Spore, I got hit by this, and I keep falling for this s***. No more.

Was the DLC price a surprise to anyone? Was the DLC release a surprise to anyone?

After all, this is the same company that charges $20 or so for just a new town in The Sims 3 and milks the expansion packs for all they're worth. They also have a history of releasing DLC without fixing gameplay bugs, from Spore to The Sims to many, many other games. This is what they do.

While it's distasteful, I can't imagine that this development is really a shock to anyone.

The whole Simcity saga is so great, I'm just sitting here eating popcorn n_n

Kind of reminds me of the old Daikatana days a little, I for one hope they keep it up.

edit: It's also pretty interesting to go through the thread and see everyone who was optimistic about the game slowly come to the same realization...

Granath wrote:

Nope and nope.

It's why I figured as long as I was happy with the base content, I'd grab it and just skip any DLC down the road.

Is that store page working for anyone? Just says server error for me.

Works for me.

I opened it in IE and it works. Doesn't for me in Firefox 20.

Looking at it, it seems like a weak version of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3.

Now that's just insulting Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. At least it looked more entertaining and held more value than this sad piece of DLC. Heck I was even a tad interested if this DLC was free, almost tempted me to get the base game, because at least then I could make a miniature railroad empire in my city. Now I just want to slap someone at EA and go " What the heck were you thinking!"

With all this hoopla surrounding SimCity I've decided to sit out for a while, but I'm still getting the itch. I decided to treat that itch with some good OLD medicine. Zeus; Master of Olympus that I got from gog.com and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum (that's currently on sale on steam for the next few hours) did just fine to treat my problem. To my surprise, they both hold up very well, and will keep me busy for weeks to come. Now I'm just waiting for SimCity 4 to go on sale and I may not ever bother with SimCity 5. So, has any one else played Zeus or RT lately; what do you guys think of these older titles today?

-Happy Gaming.

It feels weird to admit this but I've been playing Roller Coaster Tycoon, the 1999 version before the expansions, and it holds up so well. It's been an amazing experience to go back and play parks that used to give my giant issues and now just kick their rear and build amazing parks. The isometric view and the music also helps it hold up even though it's not as graphically intense as todays games. Also played a small bit of Sim City 4 after the Sim City debacle but then I was reminded how buggy it was when it crashed not even an hour after playing. So now to get my kick I'm playing Cities in Motion and building a transport empire across Europe.

CyberTrick wrote:

Oof. There was a sale on Steam a couple weeks back you missed. I'd still buy it even at the current $20 asking price.

Saw this mention to SimCity modding efforts on one of the devs twitter feeds.
