Steam Trading Cards Catch All

See if you can sell it on the Marketplace. Because, collector's item?

I'll take an invite if there are any floating around. At first I didn't care but now this has me really interested

edit: Got an invite, thanks Merphle! And I would respond to your chat but apparently TF2 is updating and I can't do anything while it's going. Sorry about that

So I got five TF2 card drops. All different. Upper right corner it says 'No card drops remaining'
I noticed it counting down. So I take it will reset every week, for every game.
Other games still show card drops available.

I've so far gotten 4 card drops from TF2, of which 1 was a duplicate. The TF2 badge says 1 drop remaining, but no timer.

Also, I noticed that CS:GO is free for everyone to play idle in this weekend...

Thanks for the invite, Brainz. I got three cards tonight.

I can has invite?

Edit: Apparently the answer is yes. Thanks Merphle.

Check the community hub. If you really want an invite. They're going for 23-25 cents.

That should have been made clearer from the beginning. They are called trading cards, so I guess it makes sense they would encourage you to trade them.

Restricting them to people who have only spent money on the F2P games is not very cool.

If someone has an invite, I'd like to try it. I'm due for a replay of HL2.

Trading requires you to have something to trade in return. If you can only get 3-5 cards for 5-9 card sets, what are you going to trade to get those remaining 2-4 cards? Sure, if you get doubles, you can trade those but you're likely not getting more than one card in return since they all have the same rarity so you're back to the drop limit. This isn't set up to encourage trading. It's set up so that if you want to complete a set, you have to purchase the remaining cards from the market.

It's disappointing that something seemed like this would be basically just a fun perk for playing games is going to require quite a bit of work outside of the games to complete. I'll get a TF2 badge but that's only because I'm crazy and have seven accounts for it. For the rest of the games, I'll just sell the cards so that I don't have incomplete sets staring me in the face.

Yeah, so, my enthusiasm for this is completely gone now. The drop limits for the games are permanent and don't reset (reddit post about it). So, once you've hit your limit, you have to complete the other half of the set either through trading or purchasing them on the market. On top of that, they've updated the FAQ to include that for TF2 and Dota, you only get drops if you've spent more than $9 on in-game purchases (or purchased TF2 before it went F2P).

edit: To clarify on TF2 and Dota, it appears that you just need a premium account ($5 in TF2 or purchased before F2P, no idea for Dota) to get drops and every $9 you spend in-game gives you an additional card drop.

Indeed. This really saps any interest I had in the system. It isn't like it's system breaking perk if they allowed slow, but unlimited flow of cards into the wild.

Oh, but I guess Valve could skim pennies off the market trades then.

This looks weird... I'm interested. If anyone has an invite, could I get one?

No reset on the drops, more drops only when you spend money...that's a big downer.

Wow, not going to participate further if that's the case. This seemed really cool but not if I have to buy cards (since I can't trade what I only have one of). On a brighter note, I did get the marketplace pillar achievement

I'm guessing they want people to not be able to get badge for all their games, and it's more a way of showing your enthusiasm for a specific game. For example, you value TF2 more than Portal 2, so maybe you're willing to trade away the Portal 2 cards you get for TF2 ones. If everyone could get the sets on their own there's no incentive to trade and the system falls apart.

Purchasing cards on the market is trading, you're just using cash as an intermediary. Sell your unwanted cards, get cash, buy the cards you want. Not much different than walking into a games store and looking at the cabinet of Magic: the Gathering cards they have for sale.

I think it's to prevent people from "gold farming" the item card system (and to prevent a repeat of the Humble Bundle exploits that were used in the 2011 Winter Sale to rack up coal/coupons/games). Remember, there's real money attached to this system between the chance at coupons, free DLC, and the marketplace.

Seems pretty much in-line with TF2's item drop system where non-Premium accounts can't send out items they've found.

Any extra invites floating out there still? If so, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands.

Thanks Hyetal!

I had one of these in my inventory yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared upon my account being added to the trading cards beta.

Tried out Don't Starve last night for the first time and picked up all 3 of my drops in one short 75 minute session. Spent about 50 minutes with and old HL2 save this morning and got 2 cards there. Seems like a card can drop about once every 30 minutes?

Invite please. Or not, I can wait to get in since they're handing them out left and right.

Edit: Thanks psoplayer!

Could I get an invite please?

My profile should be showing the correct Steam ID now.

I totally agree, but that's not dissimilar from how pretty much any collectible card product works. I compare it to baseball cards back when I was a kid. Nobody was trying to collect *all* the baseball cards, they just wanted a particular set such as a team or a specific player. In the case of Steam cards I don't particularly care about the TF2 cards, but would like to have a full set for HL2, so I'm willing to trade my TF2 cards for HL2 cards.

It's definitely a downer, I was excited about collecting all of them. The beta is early yet though, maybe this is a restriction they'll decide to change/lift if it turns out people stop participating as a result.

I'd still love an invite if anyone has one. Steam = JohnnyMoJo

Regarding XP,

As I understand it, ANYTHING that got achievement in it give you xp, even games that aren't in the cards system.

There's a thread on the steam group already 11 pages long with people either complaining about the no drops or making suggestions for way to have reset timers or how to fix the trading card system. My suggestion is that if their going to reward those that use physical money to get their virtual badge then why can't every virtual set completed earn the completer a real set of the cards they just completed collecting? I know the idea of a physical item would make me much more interested in actually completing these card sets because otherwise it's a neat feature that I'm soon going to forget and ignore.

Thanks for the invite!

edit: I have a Sniper card if anyone want to trade for it. Any class but engineer.

I have invites in my inventory. If anyone still needs one, let me know.

I think the Trading cards system will change in due time. If people complain already and it's being dropped by players...something will have to give.

I'm still looking for an invite, if you wouldn't mind.

I too would like an invite if anyone has a spare.
Some weirdo has given me an invite, so I'm all set now.
Thanks weirdo!
