FFXIV: catch all

I'm really hoping this turns out well, and every time I stare at my collectors edition of FFXIV i get a little pissed I didn't receive a beta invite for this version.

? They supposed to have sent one out to everyone that bought the last one. Could've sworn i saw a massively blurb on that.

So I looked into this. Apparently it was only if you had been a paid subscriber for something like 3 months.

[EDIT AND NDA WARNING - apparently the NDA is only lifted for the press / media]

Any further impressions from GWJers? FFXIV: ARR is supposed to be tracking towards Phase 3 of the Beta testing later in June.

I must say, the initially released game was beautiful, it was the interface and systems / content that were under-cooked.

From the noise that is spreading from beta testers though, it seems they are going back to basics (recycling mechanics and not trying to re-invent the MMORPG genre). It sounds as though most people are cautiously optimistic but it would be good to hear a personal account of things.

Got my beta invite today. Downloading now.

I must say though, over the last 2 years I've kind of developed an MMO fatigue of sorts. Most of the MMOs that I've played since then have been more of a single player experience for me. Still, I'm a huge FF fan from way back, and I did enjoy FFXI for a while, so I'm cautiously optimistic. Is there a GWJ linkshell (or whatever they call guilds in FFXIV?)

I got mine yesterday as well. I downloaded it and I'm ready to play. I spent $100 on those stupid crystals that I never used so I'm going to play for sure, I just hope they made the game run well on a kb+m like a traditional MMO.

None that i'm aware of... we've not been able to talk about it for so long it's just habit. Plus my mmo time has been with Rift here lately when i do play some.

That part i'll talk about. You'll be pleasently surprised!

I got the beta invite last night, starting to play now. Pretty...

Got my beta key this morning - downloading the client now.

Looking through the forum, it looks like the NDA has been at least partially lifted. Going forward (as of the June 12th) users are allowed to talk about and post screenshots of the beta. Video and audio are still no-go's, so not streaming or anything yet. In addition, you're not allowed to talk about or post screens, etc from earlier versions of the beta/alpha (if you happen have had access.)

I ran the benchmark yesterday. The game sure does look good for an MMO. I'll be tempted to pick it up when it comes out. I'd like to try the beta if I get invited. I didn't buy the initial game, so I don't know if I'll get invited.

Is the game better optimized? Ran like crap before.

What server are folks on? I created a character on Ultros, but I probably won't be sinking a ton of time into it.

Seems to run pretty smooth for me with things on High. I haven't tried maxing out the settings, but it's looking pretty nice.

I'm on Malboro. Toon is Artemis Valdrast.

You having any latency issues? It looked like all the FF named worlds were JP server.

Malboro is listed as a NA server.

Ah, OK, cool. I didn't spend much time looking at the list the first time in, but it seemed like all the recognizable names were locked up on the JP side.

I've gone ahead and created a character on Malboro named Feyza Aysun.

Whoops! I didn't realize that was you! Sorry!

No worries, I didn't realize the testing period was just the weekend: they've already taken the servers down. It sounds like the next test will include recovering our old v1 characters; time still TBD.

Ahhh. So we don't know yet if there's going to be another test this coming weekend?

I just checked, and it looks like they've gone ahead and scheduled the next test for this coming Friday & Saturday (June 21, 2013 (Friday), 2:00 a.m. to June 23, 2013 (Sunday), 2:00 a.m. PDT) - here's the beta forum post.

The post also contains info regarding old v1 characters being available. Basically, just find the server you had a character on before, and the character should be there waiting for you. They have some articles (here and here) relating to the transition, including currency valuation adjustments.

I only played up to level five, so take this with a grain of salt. I'm cautiously optimistic. Controller support already feels pretty good. Quests give XP and coin. Crystals stack to ... like... a thousand? It's a big flippin' number. Inventory space in general is less hateful. I haven't gotten far enough into the game to really comment on the content, but it looks and feels pretty gewd.

I'm currently torn on this, as I liked the look and feel of the game, I just found it dialogue heavy.

However, Greenmangaming has a 25% off voucher good through July 1 that brings price of game down to $22.50.
At that price, willing to take it for a 30 day test drive.

For anyone interested, GMG voucher is GMG25-BAWQB-8UQWG

Really enjoying this and I'll be playing upon release. I'm transferring to server "Excalibur".

Pretty interested in this game after playing in the beta. Do they have information out on live server names/locations yet?

So anyone know when the next beta starts? I got into the beta this weekend but it just keeps telling me to wait until the next beta.

Must be soon if launch is late next month. Are gwj folks transferring to a particular server? My problem is living in Australia so half the time either US or EU are offline so the only option is to pick a Japanese server and rely on the infamous function like I did in ffxi

I never played at original launch (tried the beta and it actually led to me cancelling the preorder), but the redesign of the game has me interested. I've preordered already and will see where that goes.

My understanding though is that legacy players will have their own servers. Is this correct?
If so, is there anyone else starting from scratch? Just wanting to know if I should keep an eye out for server selection.

From what I understand there ARE servers that are geared for the Legacy players, but not limited to to them. So anyone, even those new to the experience can join a Legacy server however, they will be playing with people who have already been playing the game for years and most likely already have many level 50 characters. Legacy servers are just servers created so those who have been playing can all gather together with other high level players. I also believe that there are JP specific Legacy servers and US/EU specific Legacy servers. Here is a list of servers:

United States

Balmung (LEGACY)
Excalibur (LEGACY)
Hyperion (LEGACY)
Sargatanas (LEGACY)
Adamantoise
Behemoth
Cactuar
Coeurl
Diabolos
Gilgamesh
Goblin
Leviathan
Malboro
Midgardsormr
Ultros

European

Ragnarok (LEGACY)
Cerberus
Moogle
Odin EU
Shiva EU

Japanese

Aegis (LEGACY)
Durandal (LEGACY)
Gungnir (LEGACY)
Masamune (LEGACY)
Ridill (LEGACY)
Atomos
Bahamut
Chocobo
Garuda
Ifrit
Mandragora
Ramuh
Tiamat
Titan
Tonberry

I'm confused by the whole legacy thing. Isn't the entire character leveling system different? I don't plan on using my old characters at all. Granted my highest one is like level 28 but still.

I haven't really played much in the way of MMOs before, but this seems interesting. Mainly because I like Final Fantasy and I hear this has a nifty crafting system.

I was looking at the Beta signups, has the PS3 beta started yet? It seems like it hasn't.
