GWJ-ATX 2013: Third Monday Movies

That's all I could think about all movie.

I literally believe the pitch for this movie was simply: "Die Hard meets Red Dawn, but today." And bam, they had a "go" picture.

By the way, super disappointed to find that Terror in Beverly Hills is not on Netflix streaming. The trailer had me sold.

The Last Stand has stood down. Third Monday Movies has a new master.

For the record, The Last Stand has scores of 54 and 59 at Metacritic and http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/last..., respectively, while Olympus Has Fallen brings home a 41 and a 47. I am no longer the weakest link!

For those who have an interest, I've picked Saturday, 5/4 as the tentative date for the GWJ-ATX spring picnic. Input is welcome.

Now that it's the next thing on the calendar, it's time to start thinking about the Second Annual(?) GWJ Austin Family Picnic. Last year seemed to work out fairly well, and given a lack of feedback to the contrary, I guess we'll do it again. Same time (11-2), same place (Cat Hollow Park). Here's last year's post for more details. Since it's Cinco de Mayo weekend, I think I'll make some carnitas and bring some tortillas as my contribution. You all are, of course, welcome to bring whatever you like.

Post questions (and RSVP as well) in the thread and PM me for my phone number if you want it. Also, feel free to pass the link on to any GWJ'ers in the Austin metro that you want to invite.

I need metal friends in this city. Kylesa coming May 18th. Mastodon coming with the Mayhem Fest tour in August.

So far, only *Legion* and MyBrainHz have indicated any likelihood of attendance. As such, I'm thinking that it may be appropriate to cancel this due to lack of interest.

I plan to attend Mayhem, but probably in Houston. And I may leave early; I'm going for Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom. Are you a regular on the metal thread, Legion?

And Grump: I'm interested, but I don't think I'm keen to commit the kids to that drive at their present ages. Come to the game of the century this September and I'll see you there!

We're putting our house on the market so I'd probably have to back out anyway. There's soooo much to do in the next 1-2 weeks to make that work...

(Not moving out of the area, just to a different place)

Get me a ticket (for under $200) and I'm there.

At risk of making this thread all about BC MUD, where are you going? We looked at a couple houses on the other side of Brushy Creek this past Sunday. Some more land was our thought, but there are definitely some trade-offs.

Better yet, you and Brain should come together! Tickets are hard, but I can almost certainly get you a free place to stay.

Well it's been over 24 hours since I floated the idea cancelling the event due to lack of interest and in that time, the only local (sorry, Fed) feedback has reduced attendance by 50% so... yeah, I guess there's no interest. On the plus side, (the rest of) my family was going to be in slim attendance anyway due to other obligations so I guess this eliminates those concerns, anyway.

In other news, it looks like we should have some fun movie choices in May.

TL;DR: Picnic cancelled, movie on May 20.

Sorry folks, I just got back from a long vacation. Sucks when you don't have internet for so long.

Why don't we put out a few dates and see which one people can make it to? I loved the last picnic, good clean austin fun.

Man this month is flying by. It's time to pick next Monday's movie. Iron Man seems to be the obvious choice but I fear everyone else has already seen it. Thoughts? Alternatives? (Star Trek is out because $DMD is taking us to see it on Thursday.)

I haven't seen Iron Man yet, but can't make it anyway, because I'll be unpacking or packing, depending on whether we move this weekend or next. I will be there for the June movie, though.

Well, Drew Magary (Deadspin funbag) is having a book reading on Monday downtown.
I may attend.

What book?

The Postmortal was fantastic.

He has a new parenting book out.

I should probably check that out, since I'm a parent and he's hilarious.

The Postmortal wasn't funny at all. Still great!

May is just too full... and I already got my monthly movie fix yesterday (for free, woot!). I'm out of town (sans family) this weekend too boot so I probably shouldn't push my luck with the spousal unit.

Anyway, _if_ Boogle goes to the book reading, I _may_ join him (and y'all are certainly welcome to coordinate here if anyone else is interested) but other than that, we'll put the gathering on hiatus for this month. Thanks for understanding.

Well I got my May movie fix from Star Trek but I didn't get my GWJ fix. What shall we see next week? Except for the aforementioned, I haven't seen any movies since April's venture to see hashtag Olympus Has Fallen.

Well, throwing one option out there: Lake Creek is showing Jaws 3D as part of the Summer of '83 series.

Man of Steel opens this week, so it should be playing everywhere next Monday.

This Is The End also opens this week, has some fairly good reviews already, and given that the wife and I just watched Freaks and Geeks, I'd be up for a comedy with Franco and Rogan.

So, this then?

Man of Steel got panned so I would be in for This is the end (depending on location).

I was gonna go Village to get us somewhere in the middle but they don't seem to be playing This Is The End so I guess 6:50 at Slaughter Lane it is. If you're still in, buy two tickets (you may recall my CC getting closed due to fraud) and I'll give you the money at work. Don't forget to post seats in case anyone wants to join.

Row 46, seats 13, 14

For the adults in the room who might not be sure what they might be getting into, "This Is the End May Be the Greatest Stoner Movie Ever Made" That's just as likely to be a warning for some as an enticement for others.

I bought Row 45, seat 14 - right in front of you guys - as it's the only thing in the ballpark of being next to you that was still available.

Hey guys, I would normally be in, but we just closed on our house today and I still have a bunch of stuff to do at the apartment. Catch you in July.

I'm never going to see anything with all the light reflecting off Brendan's head.

FYI, I'm waiting to see what the feedback is like on pacific rim but right now I expect to be at flix on Monday night to see some movie or another (recommendations, suggestions, and requests welcome).

Sorry, too highly rated for you.
