Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

What I'm really enjoying right now:

Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (and Other Stories)
Jose James - No Beginning, No End
The Dear Hunter - Migrant
Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
DJ Koze - Amygdala
Rhye - Woman

New Frank Turner really hits me hard at the moment. Looking forward to the album release.

Kacey Musgraves was getting talked about on NPR, so I figured I would give this song a listen to today. It's pretty good. I really don't like modern country music, so I'm surprised at how much I dig it. The lyrics are actually pretty interesting, too. Anyone have any thoughts on the album? I may actually pick it up. I've only heard the song below and one of the other singles. Both are pretty good.

Edit: Okay, I bought the album and am about halfway through it. I'm pretty sure it's a great album. Really digging it. I think that people that dig Rilo Kiley will like it.

PAPA - these guys opened up for Lord Huron and killed it. Great set and a great EP.

I just put this in the Kickstarter thread, but I thought it might also be a good fit in this thread. The drummer is a friend of mind that did some work on my last album.

All Songs Considered first listen of the new Lips album, "The Terror."

Unsurprisingly I guess it sounds kinda like Embryonic; my initial reaction is that I prefer Embryonic, but maybe it will grow on me.

Been listening to an Aussies Hip-Hop/Electronic group Hermitude!

Some excellent stuff

Oh god, I just listened to this a bunch... I think I'm in love

Neither a band nor a song you should know about, but a website and iTunes/Android app-- Songza. Commercial-free music for the moment. Go there. It's good.

Impressive variety in their playlists.

The Beards!

Remember Me by British Sea Power, the best British band that hardly anybody has heard of. Also recently called the best British band of last decade by the Independent's gig reviewer.

Hey, you guys like metal, right? Hey, you guys like smashing random objects with a 1979 Impala station wagon, right?

That was fantastic!

That was $5000 well spent!

Current songs of the moment:

Murder by Death - Lost River

I'm convinced Adam Turla was possessed by Johnny Cash's ghost in 2003. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Toh Kay - With Any Sort of Certainty

Video by GWJ's own bombsfall

Just can't get this one out of my head. I go around whistling the whistling part all damn day. This was the only version of the video I could find on YouTube due to the record label that thinks they own the song issuing takedown notices left and right. Jerks. In protest I made sure I bought the record straight from the source so the label wouldn't get any of my money. First time I've ever bought vinyl as well. Should be sweet!

Janelle Monáe has a new song with Erykah Badu: Q.U.E.E.N.

Thanks for this!

The new Mindless Self Indulgence is coming shortly- it's already out for Kickstarter sponsors. I'm a little dissapointed that they keep moving further away from the "MSI" sound, but it's still a really good album nonetheless.

Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson's collab project The Uncluded dropped today, it's strange, unexpected and pretty awesome. Their radically different styles shouldn't logically work as a whole, but they totally do.

Last but not least, lately I've been really digging a local metal/hardcore band called Gaytheist. They're pretty awesome. Go buy all their albums so they can keep making music, please.

Something folky for your afternoon:

Going to see her on May 18th.

FIDLAR - No Waves

Frightened Rabbit - Acts of Man

Rah Rah - Duet for Emmylou and the Grievous Angel

The Films - Number 1

Submarines - Shoelaces

Frank Turner - We Shall Not Overcome

Im really digging the whole new album by Frank Turner

I really dig that Frightened Rabbit track. Cool song, and cool production. I love those super-compressed, super-roomy bashy drums.

Please read the following and use your discretion before clicking the link to listen.

I've been debating about whether or not to post this because Funeral, the Norwegian doom metal band playing the linked song, is quite arguably the most depressing band in the world.

I decided to post it because after a few years of listening to my co-patient's deepest fears, experiences, thoughts, and concerns I've become very aware that my experience is not the experience many diagnosed with terminal illness take away. I think some of this track very poignantly captures and communicates some of what they have been sharing with me and I think that insight has value, even if it does come wrapped in one heck of a downer package.

youtube; Funeral: The Architecture of Loss.

Been enjoying some dubstep lately:

Excited to see these guys and hear their new stuff next weekend!

New Clutch next weekend? Suh-weet

Holy crap, you guys! Songza is my new favorite thing. Check out this playlist:

Teenage Riot: The American 80s Underground.

So much good stuff!! Bad Brains, Descendents, Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr., Jawbreaker, Hüsker Dü, Fugazi! This is like the best parts of my teenage years all over again!
