Sleeping Dogs (Formerly Known As "True Crime: Hong Kong") Catch All

Oh, I've already played through Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Arkham City over the past few months so I'm already a master at countering. Hell, usually I just hang back and wait for them to make a move. It's making a leg sweep that never seems to work out for me.

I'm liking this game a lot. Like those other two games I mentioned, there is just something about it that scratches an itch when most games of this type usually fail at retaining my interest for more than a few hours.

The heavy moves just plain don't work on all enemies. Many of them just don't fall on the leg sweep until they're stunned - you may be doing it right.

The only bit I've struggled with initially in the melee are the wrestling heavies. Until I unlocked a roundhouse kick or something - I think it's the second heavy move - they were getting me all the time. I do feel I want to be on the offensive until those guys are out. With the lighter guys it's counter all the way.

Just finished the story last night (stayed up too late because it was pretty clearly coming to the climax). What a great game. As others have said, some parts are a bit cliche/trope-y, but it's more a thing of genre/style so it works well.

Fun dynamics, enjoyable story, good voice-work. Really enjoyed it. I am strongly tempted to go back in and just mess around doing many side things I skipped because I like the world so much (even though the pile calls me).

Just a great, fun game. Deserves the hype. Definitely NOT for children to see while you play!

Got this from Steam for 10$. I usually burn out on open world games quickly but I figured it'll hold my attention long enough to justify 10$.

The game would freeze if I had the texture pack installed. Disabled that and it ran. Wouldn't load my save this morning despite the texture pack not being active. Found a solution but now it hitches. Runs well enough but should run better on my laptop.

Yeah, this isn't really telegraphed that well in the main gameplay. You have to do the training in the dojo to get the real info on enemy types, how to identify them, and what moves they are resistant/weak to.

This is on offer on XBLA this week along with discounts on all the DLC. Which DLC is worth it. I'm a tad dazed by the sheer quantity of the stuff.

I'd say only the Nightmare in Northside pack. It's the only story DLC that's on sale (Year of the Snake just released today, so is not part of this sale). It's short and pretty combat heavy, but I found it to be quite fun.

Most everything else are weapon/suit/car packs, and aren't really worth it, as it's basically paying for God Mode items. And it's so easy to level up your skills and earn money to buy stuff in the game as is.

Stay away from the car packs! They'll impregnate your sister!

The fighting contest is pretty fun.

I do regret getting this on the PS3. The framerate is all over the place, although just about within acceptable bounds, but the image doesn't pass a quality check. I've never been bothered by upscaling this much. Maybe they're upscaling more than, say, Halo, where I don't even notice it? It casts everything through a blurry, grainy filter, and when those textures are low-res to begin with, it's not pretty. It's still an atmospheric title, but I don't want to stop to look at it. Overall it looks to me like it's a video feed that has been compressed a little too much. Should've been a PC title for me.

Which DLC is worth it.

Year of the Snake and Nightmare in North Point are probably the only two actual story-content packs. Avoid anything that's gear-related. You don't want it. You just want to play the main game. Buying the extra weapons and cars and such will totally foul up the sense of progression and accomplishment.

And no body wants that.

Thanks all.

The combat is great and has addressed my biggest problem with open world games; combat sucks.

Now to fix the massive stuttering problem. Stupid compatibility mode.

Spoiler:

I loved putting Big Smile Lee in the f*cking ice chipper, especially after what he did to my hommie Jackie.

I picked this up recently, and although I haven't played too much, it's been a lot of fun. The melee combat is quite enjoyable, and I find myself looking forward to fights. Tonight's highlight was when I grappled a guy, ran his head into a large glass wndow and emptied out an aquarium. Fun times.

So I just started this up and am absolutely loving it. I haven't had a game that had me waking up to play a bit before work in quite a while. I love the aesthetic, the sound and (thus far) the story.

Got it for 20$ and it was a steal.

I just finished this after getting it on PS+ for free last Tuesday. I probably won't go for 100 percent, but it's such a fun world and game that I will probably go back and complete more favors and races.

I can't say anything that hasn't been said in this thread, just wanted to register my enjoyment. I would have happily paid $20 for it.

It was worth the $16 I paid for it, for sure. I really enjoyed Sleeping Dogs.

I hear the Nightmare DLC is good. Is anything else worth checking out?

The fighting tournament DLC was fun.

My god.. I picked this up for $5 or something a while back from GMG.

This game is FANTASTIC. I don't normally like open world games.. but the combat and atmosphere is so satisfying. Beautiful graphics on the PC!

Yeah, it's a great game. I rushed through it a little, since I have so many games to play, but it's one of the games I fully intend to replay. And that's not something that happens often.

Playing the game again- this time on my PS3- since my wife deleted my game accidentally mid-playing it. I was previously

Spoiler:

shortly after the Winston's wedding, don't know how far in that is.

Even playing the game again- man, it's just so enjoyable. There is very little I don't dig about the game.

I'm still trying to figure out how they made me care so much about the story and the characters. The cutscenes were really, really well done.

Agreed.

Am I missing something here? Open-world, martial arts action with Arkham Asylum-style combat mechanics. I should love this. And yet, after a good hour and a half, I was ready to toss it out the window. I can't seem to get into the flow of combat, which is both surprising and frustrating considering how much time I spent in Batman: AA and AC.

Maybe I'll just go back and finally play through Jade Empire.

Lobster, those screenshots are closer to real life than you might think. Especially since I think the second one takes place in the club district here.

Sleeping Dogs tries to do a lot of stuff and ends up being B quality at everything. The combat is good but not as tight at Batman, the racing is decent but feels kind of tacked on, there are women to date but there's little story there and after the first date they pretty much vanish never to be heard from again, the game world is pretty large and interesting but the graphics feel a bit dated, etc. All in all, I liked the game, but not enough to stick with it to the end.

Regarding combat, the correct approach depends on the enemy, but the core of it seems to come down to counterattacks, plus putting the occasional dude's head through an air conditioner to thin the crowd. Once you've upgraded your combat skills a bit the combos get pretty powerful and things start to get less tedious, but I never felt like I could just cut loose like I can in Batman.

Those are great screenshots. In a game that has so many wardrobe options though, I do with your choice of dress would affect NPC reactions a bit.

I started playing recently. I think I got it for like 4.5$ on a limited time 91% off deal. I watched someone play it on a stream (maybe Quink )and started playing . It's a fun "light game".(smash buttons and people get beat up) . I'm not that good at it and the counter attack key isn't always responsive. Maybe I should try to play with a controller - I have one but I am not used to playing anything with a controller.

I pretty much get in , do a mission, beat a bunch of people up and then quit to do other stuff. The driving is manageable . I'm not a fan of racing games but I got first place on the first race somehow (2nd attempt or so after I crashed into something and was stuck). Maybe my success was related to running over the lady that started the race . The game is fairly brutal but the graphics isn't that gross.

The city is really nice looking but well it's just a means to an end. The plot is pretty decent - good guy/bad gun combined in 1. I do need more cloth but it's not that important. The camera sometimes has problems with obstacles in the way but it's usually ok. I found the Karaoke game kinda silly and pointless. All I want is to beat up some people in 1 way or another. Maybe guns are "nice" but I think it would be better to just Hand to Hand everyone.

For a 4.5$ game it's a good return on investment.
