Pacific Rim, a movie by Guillermo del Toro

the whole GLadOS threw me for a loop when I heard it. I was like "noooo, it cant be." (secretly hoping I was wrong)

CES trailer

GdT has said that he's going to take another stab at getting At the Mountains of Madness made. How well or not well Pacific Rim does will obviously be a huge factor. Therefore, seeing Pacific Rim is now a moral imperative.

I still have a huge nerd boner for this movie.

My god....I wanted to see this before but now I have no choice!

At first I was like "aww 2013" and then I remembered it was 2013. Hooray!

After watching that CES trailer the first thing I think of is "I need to go dark on this one". Looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

I'm going to be very disappointed if it doesn't have serious callbacks to the kaijuu classics.

I'm pretty sure there's a slightly new trailer out for GlaDOS versus Godzilla.

New trailer, LOTS of spoiler filled footage. Still looks like AWESOME fun!

You know, I still think it looks awful, but that trailer at least looked more fun than the first one I saw. I might go see it.

*ahem*

WANT!

Sorry about that.

Saw it earlier. My brain made sounds that I'm pretty sure are X-Rated.

I'm curious about your POV.

I thought the first trailer was fair, that VO hurt it, but I felt this one hit me with the feels. I don't feel confident about the scientist guy.

Still not getting why it had to be two pilots.

Yeah, that really confuses me as well.

I assume that it will be "BECAUSE SCIENCE!!" as well as "PLOT REQUIREMENT!!" like in Top Gun.

Probably also "Because that's how the Japanese do it so f*ck logic, I'm making a two hour homage!"

I could understand it better if they had different tasks, but we see them in lock step, each performing the exact same motions.

The trailer briefly mentions some sort of mind-meld as well, so whatever is going on they're basically able to mentally read each other's heads and decide on a common action.

Maybe the robots are too big to be controlled by a single brain?

But when has GDT ever made a bad movie? For me he's one of those "safe bet it's gonna be awesome" directors.

I don't think that applies. The Japanese typically have a single primary pilot for their mechs, no matter how large. Generally, there's only 1. Where there are two pilots, they're typically required to entwine around each other to operate the mech, usually in titillating ways. Yes, this also applies when both pilots are men or both are women. I'm curious as to how this could work in a live-action setup.

That's the "in-universe" explanation. From some of the other material (interviews and such) that have come out, the Jagers are run by directly interfacing with the pilot's nervous system, but they are too big for one pilot to control alone. So one pilot controls the left side and the other the right side. (No, really.) In order to make this work the pilots have their nervous systems linked together.

This, of course, will probably become a major plot point.

That's practically a romantic wrinkle built into the lore.

Charlie Day makes anything better by being in it.

I couldn't find the pirate door scene.

I am horrified by my answer possibly being right!

But the real reason must be TWO PILOTS = DRAMA.

He is exactly who you want dealing with alien mentality:

I've enjoyed some of his movies, disliked some, but never fallen in love with any. He's a director with great visual talent whose stories usually feel half-baked. My impression of this movie to this point had been that it looked like one of those where I enjoy looking at production stills and effects reels more than actually watching it and paying attention. But this last trailer seemed to have a bit more humor hanging around the edges (like the robot using a cruise ship as a weapon) rather than being smartly-made militaristic humdrum with a lot of speeches about humanity not giving up in the face of danger.
