dibs - thanks for the new word - Schadenfreude! Admittedly I did have to google it, but I'm totally using that next time I see someone trip over.

Has anyone given Vendetta Online's iPad release a try?

Also, if any other iPad owners have young children my son is addicted to I Love Fireworks. It's not a game, it's a fireworks show toy. Wherever you tap, a firework appears. Longer tap, bigger boom. Draw a line and you get a trail leading up to the explosion when you lift your finger. ThatKiddo now asks for it every time he sees me on my iPad. There's a free "Lite" version, I highly recommend checking it out.

This is pretty much all I could find, but does anyone else have any suggestions? I'm looking for iPad games/apps for small children (mine's not two yet). Thanks a bunch, the AppStore is just so huge, it's really easy to get lost in there!!!

Pop along here.

Lots of wooden style puzzles and games (straight out shapes, or more complex tangrams). Most have a 'lite' version to trial, so you can find one they enjoy. Mine liked the wooden puzzle ones for the animals. You add in all the shapes, then the scene animates.best part is, no losing pieces under the couch.

Anyone recommend me a light weight turn based strategy game that plays well on Ipad?

NO RTS please, turn based. No heavy duty spreadsheet games.

I need to kill about 1 hour when I go get the oil changed.

Thanks ^^

No kidding. Thanks for the heads up.

And yeah. 1.3 gb? Time to unleash spring cleaning on the iPad app closet.

Thanks a bunch, M0nk3yboy!! I almost PM'd you, because I figured that if anyone would know, you would!! Going to start with 1+2=3 Jungle Puzzle! (and we already lost pieces in the trash can, he loves tossing stuff in there! )

If it's anything like Neuroshima Hex, I'm totally in. That is about my favorite IOS game.

It's not, but it's a great board game.

Waiting on price and review on that one. Seems like a bunch of board game conversions release in questionable shape fairly regularly.

Speaking of, Alien Frontiers came out to mixed reviews. Did that ever get patched up to snuff?

Here here. I'm totally with you. Hex is a lot of fun.

It's really not even a little like Hex.

Eclipse is like a 4X PC game. You're taking territory, harvesting resources and building space fleets. I've really enjoyed the few games I've played.

The 2 games shared iOS developers, not game designers. Kind of a meaningless plug in that article.

This weekend I decided to check out a couple of F2P card games based on existing properties. Here's my toughts:

Transformers: Legacy (Legacies?) - While I love Original Generation Transformers and I like the art on the cards (especially the diorama effect applied to Tier 3 cards that uses the gyro sensor), this is a straight-up Guardian Cross clone (if there's a proper genre designation for these games I'd love to know it). You have an energy meter, you do "missions" to find cards which you then use to fight bosses or other players in what is basically auto-pilot Pokemon. Unfortunately, this seems more fiddly than Guardian Cross as you have equipment cards to collect, each Transformer has two cards you need to "fuse" in order to reach their full potential, and you group the cards into squads to fight players. In a further step down from Guardian Cross the "missions" to collect cards are broken into smaller steps where you either find a card, fight a special boss or another player, or you have to stop missiles shot at you (tap on them at the right time which isn't hard to figure out) by the same character. Lastly, the game bounced me out (aka the "we want you to buy IAP now" point) on the second boss which managed to wipe my party by the time I had whittled down its HP to the 50% mark. This was after about 20-30 minutes of play. Delete.

Might & Magic: Duels of Champions - This F2P CCG finally opened to North America in the last two weeks, so there's not a lot of coverage yet despite being in beta in Europe for a while. At the core, it's yet another lane based combat CCG but with the addition of a second row on each side of the battlefield . Melee creatures in the front, shooters in the back, flying go in either row. In addition, creatures can move to a different row or attack each turn. Unblocked creatures damage your opponent's hero card (which generally has about 20 HP, highest damage dealt (before buffs) from a creature is 3 HP from what I've seen so far) as is standard. So far so good. In addition, you have spells and "destiny" cards which do different effects. Spells are the standard direct damage to creatures, buff/debuff, etc. Destiny cards tend to deal with card draws and increasing your resources. Finally, you have a choice from two event cards which change every turn and provide a very wide range of subtle options that are available to both players. Definitely liking the gameplay and it's a great attempt at distilling the gameplay from Heroes of Might & Magic into a 15-20 minute card game.

This game is fairly multiplayer focused. There's a small single-player campaign which serves as a tutorial and a way to practice and get some of the premium currency for free. However, it's not very long so if you don't care for multiplayer this probably won't be a good fit. I can't speak much to the IAP yet, but based on what I've read on BGG you're looking at roughly $1 for a 15 card booster although I haven't done the math myself. The game gives you a starter deck for free (from 3 different options) and you'll need to get additional heroes (for making more decks or playing with different factions) by buying the remaining starters or randomly via boosters. Fortunately, booster packs can be purchased with the currency earned from playing through the campaign or multiplayer matches, but I'm not sure how much time you need to spend to earn enough currency for 15 more cards. Oh, and there doesn't appear to be any sort of limit on the number of games you can play per day which was refreshing after bouncing off Transformers.

So I'm obviously going to stick with it for a bit. Unfortunately, the game requires a UPlay login since I think it can play against players using the desktop client. If anyone else is interested in trying it, please give it a try and friend "shoptroll" and I'll gladly play a few rounds with you.

I've been eagerly awaiting Eclipse on iOS for a couple of months now. Should be out any day. Love the board game, have played it twice and have been trying to get another session up for a little while. It's a solid four hours four a four player game in my experience.

BDC's said it would be $6.99 with no IAPs (except for the board game expansion they've said they'll work on next). They have put the release back twice now (in the face of a lot of fans giving the hurry up) I believe in an effort to release the game in what they consider an appropriate state. Going by Nuroshima that's a pretty high standard. All the stills and videos look thoroughly impressive though I've been on the kool aid for this one for a while now.

Eclipse looks to my eyes to be the best iOS release for me this year. It's absurd the number of times I've refreshed the App Store hoping for it to drop.

At 30% of the original vision, all of the douchbaggery the devs did - I'm not going to give them anything, ever. They took out all of the parts I was looking forward to on top of the sh*t they pulled.

Don't know what they had for an original vision, but my understanding is that they had to make some compromises for the mobile version/interface but I haven't really followed the development that closely aside from the updates on the PC port KS page. I'm still interested in the PC version which it sounds like is going to be the lead platform going forward anyways.

Star Command was supposed to be turned based, right? But then they screwed it and made it an RTS?

Screw those guys. I was interested in the early versions but am sooooo glad I never backed them.

They've been quoted saying PC as well as Mobile will be leading going forward - Polygon and Pocket Tactics.

They explained what they did here.

Reading past commentary on the kickstarter (specifically when one of the Coombs brothers started threatening violence to people who don't like the game on 2 April) it looks more like they pissed away the money, rather than get the frameworks in place to be expanded on. Stating that "PC is the primary platform going forward" pissed all over the people who initially backed the project for iOS, which was their first kickstarter and gave them the spring to get moving on the project.

Between interviews and the kickstarter, it paints a pretty grim picture of what they did with the money. They did a major engine change in the middle of the development cycle, from Turn Based to Real Time, and then ripped out all of the ship targeting, replacing with mini-games.

Yes. I'll dig around and find the articles if there is more interest.

EDIT: Punctuation. Commas save lives.
