Post a Picture - Something You Created!

You guys are all so talented!

Just about finished with this - a queen-sized farmhouse bed, with almost all traditional joinery. The headboard and footboard are tongue-and-groove, with hand-cut dowels connecting the stiles and top boards. There are mortise-and-tenon joints between the rails and head/footboards, reinforced with 8" long cast iron bolts, forged by the good folks at Horten Brasses.

This was a fun project. It took about 4 months, as woodworking is a hobby that lends itself to weekends, and mine are largely consumed with skiing in the winter months. I did the majority of the cutting in January, and then gradually assembled the pieces in my basement shop and waited for warm enough weather to haul everything up into my garage to stain and polyurethane. The past few weekends have been nice, so with the doors open, I wrapped up the project, finished the assembly, and moved it into the freshly-repainted guest bedroom this afternoon.

You must've got the C-Clamp jumbo pack. That looks amazing, congrats on your hard work!

Thanks! Second piece of furniture I've built, after a farm table last year. Next up may be chairs for that table, but the rear legs have me somewhat daunted.

A man can never have enough clamps. I need at least four times as many as I have now, along with some truly long bar clamps.

This is the truth. Every time I get more clamps, the next project makes me feel like I still need more.

Nice bed, btw.

Pshaw! Dude's only got 2. Not gonna get much done with that.

He's got 3 more, you just can't see them.

Oh wow! I saw a link to this video on the Streetlight FB page and made a note to watch it when I get home. Now I'm extra excited cause I know a goodjer made it.

I'm super pumped for the new SM and Toh Kay albums. I've been rocking the new streetlight single in my car all week.

Holy crap, bombsfall, I am truly impressed. Nice work!

Wow bombsfall. That was beautiful and amazing.

Hey you there - just reading the thread. Why aren't you watching that?

I am confused and awestruck. Beautiful video.

I don't know what I watched, but it was haunting and lovely.

THANKS GUYS. Tomas and I sorta go back a ways. Sorta.

Awesome post. I think you and I had similar experiences with Catch 22. My friend turned me on to Keasby Nights back in high school, but by the time I was able to see them live Tomas had already moved on which made me quite sad. They were still good, but they weren't really the same bad band. I really feel they should have taken on a different name, but hindsight is 20/20. I can remember years laterI got an IM from the same friend (yes this was back in the days of AIM) with link to a teaser MP3 from a new band called "Streetlight Manifesto". I had no clue who they were at the time and the sound in the MP3 was completely reversed. I figured half the reason he IMed me was because I knew how to edit audio and could flip it back forwards. So I finally got it reversed and that was the first time I heard "Everything Went Numb". I can remember when I heard that familiar voice I nearly jumped from my char I was so ecstatic. Since then I've seen them a ton of times and even opened for them once back when I was still in a ska band. Still one of my favorite artists of all time.

If you really dig the song do yourself a favor and pick up up the first Toh Kay album. "Better Place, Better Time" is especially good.

Edit: Bombsfall, I just noticed you're living in Pittsburgh. You totally have to come have a drink with me and SuperDave some time. We can bully the jukebox and play dumb ska songs.

Yes. this. Very cool work.

QFT (posted from bed in exactly the same pose).

I made a case for Dominion + Intrigue + Prosperity.

Nice! Where'd ya get the box from?

The art store Michaels. It was $10.

Michaels AKA the "we've always got a coupon for $40 to 50% off" store. I have their app on my phone JUST IN CASE I need crafty things on the cheap

That reminds me of a similar sports card box I made for a class project in HS. Of course, it wasn't nearly as polished that, but I still took alot of pride in it.

EDIT: Wrong thread! I did NOT create this picture.

I decided to 'make something' with my 3.5 year old daughter as a project while her sister is at Pre-school. We settled on a bird house for a tree we just cut down. It can sit on the stump, and will look nice between their two vegetable gardens they are currently tending.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC01.jpg)

So, I started with three treated pine fence pickets, a handfull of screws, and a couple of Pot Plant saucer/bases.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC02.jpg)

Pickets cut to a length that will accommodate the larger (water) bowl, and the smaller (seed) bowl. Smaller bowl is smaller to allow for a cover to protect the seed in Winter.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC03.jpg)

Weathered Jarrah (Australian hardwood) used as the base plate that will sit on the tree stump in the garden. Hard enough to keep any termites out of the main construction, even though that is also 'treated' pine.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC04.jpg)

Uprights, and mitred butt joints for the roof section.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC05.jpg)

Attaching the roofing panels, overhang marked up on the end pieces.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC06.jpg)

All panels in place, counter sunk and pre-drilled to avoid any splitting, and maximum bite on the other side. Might be over kill using two screws for each section, on both sides, but I tend to over engineer a lot of what I make.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC07.jpg)

Right way up.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC08.jpg)

Roof uprights attached with dowel pegs. I really need to get a peg rig for my drill, this was a pain doing it by sight/guesstimation.

IMAGE(http://members.iinet.net.au/~monkey.boy/TiM/BH/BHC09.jpg)

Scored the ends to give the PVA glue more to find a purchase with, and then attached the up bits to the across bits.

And that's as far as we've got. We're going to undercoat and seal the two wooden parts tomorrow, then stick it all together on Friday. Both my Daughters can then paint it on Saturday. I have no idea how that will turn out, but I believe the words 'rainbow' and 'glitter' were spoken by them both as they discussed options.

Oh well, more pics as it progresses.

I bought more than a few boxes that were for Magic Cards from Michaels.

Very cool work bombsfall!

Ugh, I wish I'd never learned about that Red Pill nonsense.

That's really attractive. Love the dowel joinery - aside from tongue and groove, dowels are my favorite type of joint in terms of difficulty to implement vs. strength.

Kudos.

Thanks!

I've been toying with the idea of tackling the Tetris Shelves I mentioned in this thread. Given how much fun I had with working with wood with this project, I think I owe it to myself to keep at it.

There is a video a few more posts down from the one I linked to with an example of someone creating a dove tail joint with only hand tools. I don't think that is beyond my ability, so I'm going to try it out on some of the off cuts from this project. If I like what I make, I'll go ahead with the project. It should also give me an idea of what tools I am short for the process too.

My sister wanted a breadbox, so I made one for her:

IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/Eg5Pfut.jpg)

IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/RYhv8Hu.jpg)

It's walnut & hickory, finished with one coat danish oil and 3 coats of wipe-on poly. I also finished the bread knife (from this kit) with padauk scales. It mounts in the groove on the side, there a few magnets inset in the groove to keep it in place.
