Oh god, i've been laughing at this for the last 15 minutes.

I like to think that if it's a song I can remember playing on heavy rotation on MTV, then it has no business being played on an oldies radio station. Then I think about how long ago it's been since MTV played any video on heavy rotation.

FTFY

One of my favorite tidbits is that we're now as far away from 1991 as 1991 was from 1969. I'm pretty sure music from the late '60s was playing on oldies stations in the early '90s. It makes sense for music from the early '90s to be playing on oldies stations now.

Yeah, but oldies stations in 1969 weren't playing hits from the 40's.

God I'm old.

It was. My mom always listened to the oldies station, to the music from when she was teenager, and I'd say turn that old stuff off, let's listen to these CDs of Nirvana and Soundgarden and the Meat Puppets and oh god

....

....

luckily, I'm already drinking.

At least he's not the black Dr. Phil.

This isn't the random things I loathe thread...

When the boss is away, the kids will play. And by "play" I mean "go to lunch and have a drink".

So, after being berated by my more pop-culture savvy friends for still having never watched any of Game of Thrones, The Wire, Django Unchained or Mad Men, I realized i'm missing a really glaring hole in my gamer cred.

I've never finished Half-Life 2. Or Portal. Ever. I've dug a smidgen into the first level of the former, and then got distracted. I'm sure the answer is self-evident, but at this point and time, should I go back and experience it?

Portal must be played. It's not too long, and there will be cake. Portal 2 is great too.

HL2 is a very good FPS, but I won't say you have to play it if you've avoided it so far.

Also Django Unchained isn't even out on DVD yet. I don't think you can berated for not having seen that. I love Mad Men and The Wire, but realize that as great as they are they're pretty niche shows. You can't be expected to see everything.

I haven't seen any of Game of Thrones myself, even though I'm now hearing that all the women get naked. Maybe I'll have to remedy that...

Half Life 2 is one of my favourite games, but it's not as good as Half Life 1 imo, and most of what it did has been bettered since so I'm not sure it holds up for a new player.

It's still worth a play if you're so inclined, you may need to force yourself through Water Hazard. I stalled there any number of times. However you're no less a person for that hole in your repertoire.

Portal 1 is short enough that even I finished it. I think I plowed though in two sittings, though it may have been three. It's only about eight or ten hours long if you're slow like me. So much awesome.

Portal is typically 2-4 hours.

Like I said, if you're slow like me.

I spent a lot of time reading the walls and exploring off-script where possible, and I suck at fps. About 8 hours if you're slow like me.

It took me like 20 hours, you insensitive rudes! >:(

I'm sure you know better than most that faster doesn't always equal better.

I think one of the reasons I don't like Doctor Who is because Matt Smith has one of the most irrationally punchable faces I've ever seen in any medium.

You know that other actors who aren't Matt Smith have played The Doctor for most of the 50 years it's been on the air, right?

Yes I'm fully aware of that, thanks. But those ones aren't on the TV right now.

Yeah... I've never gotten into Dr. Who. Couldn't tell you why, it just has never grabbed me, despite my love of sci-fi and time travel. Never-the-less when ever I hear the name Dr. Who, the 4th doctor is still the one that comes to mind, even though I've actually seen more episodes of the last three doctors then I have any of the others.

Yeah, it's great, isn't it? He's easily my favorite of the Dr's. I'm even enjoying Clara more than I have the Ponds.

Is there a word for that state when you've just eaten a big meal and you're happy and relaxed? Like everything's all right

It's called a post-prandial state.

The Itis.

Or if you want to get technical, what Coldstream said.

If possessing gamer/nerd cred means having to watch Game of Thrones, then I'll gladly show myself the door.

As others have said, Portal is short and superlative. Half-Life 2 is still I think the best corridor shooter yet made, and worth playing for an experience that hasn't been bested in almost a decade.

On my way to work, I walked past a truck with a faded LuthorCorp logo on it. Must be an old Smallville prop.

While I can understand arguments for all of these, I'm pretty nerdy and I couldn't care less about everything you just listed. What use is this "cred" you speak of, anyway?
