GWJ OOTP League Thread

There must be something going around as my team looks much like that too.

Yay, welcome to the league Absurddoctor and BillT!

Welcome to the league, guys! Get ready to have some fun!

As for Portland, it appears that they're finally on an upswing (if you can call going 13-13 in May an upswing) after the abysmal April. However, it's looking like Angel Perez will be injury prone this season, as he's out again with a minor injury. At least my lead off guy seems to be hitting again. I'm almost willing to believe the preseason write up that if I can get a decent pick out of the draft I'll be in a decent position to make a run at the wild card again this year.

Yeah, I haven't had any issues with crashing or anything like that, and I'm as updated with patches/season files as I can be as of yesterday morning.

Yeah, I've totally deleted all the files and downloaded the most recent installer, but I'm not sure where else to look. I know the program saves data in multiple locations, so I'll have to do some more digging.

Problem solved, although I have no idea how or why, I just did the same thing I've done a dozen times and it happened to work this time. Seems to happen to me every time I need to reinstall OOTP.

Pred do you have a curse on Seattle. Last year lost 4 SP for season. This year lead the league with 8 players injuried and 5 of them lost for the season. I think I know how Yankees feel.

So immersed in my problems forgot....
Welcome to new GM's.

Thanks all! I look forward to making the Mets look good for the next couple of seasons.

And my closer - the only decent pitcher on my team - goes on the DL. Can we get a redo on this season?

Okay, I bought OOTP 14, so when y'all make the move I'll join up. Until then, it'll give me some time to familiarize myself with the UI, etc.

Check in around the All-Star break.

It's your punishment for having Brian Burke on your team.

New file ya'll!

Not going to lie...It is a pretty damn stressful moment for me when I click the "update League Files" button

....

Hey, looks like Portland is still improving! So, how is the sim going to go in relation to the draft? Is this next sim going to take us right up until the draft, or will it have already passed?

We are looking forward to our divisional showdown against Boston and Brooklyn this upcoming week.
Not that 8-1/2 GB behind the first place Boston is anything to write home about or anything

Boston is never anything to write home about!

How does the draft work for us?

Hey now...we'll see how the New York teams do this year in OOTP. Actually, I think Brooklyn can beat me in a series.

Basically, you enter a ranked list of players you want to draft for each round. I usually set the first few rounds myself and then let the CPU do the rest. You can get to your ranking screen via draft pool -> draft list.

I've been wondering what the draft list was for. That will be useful in single player as well, less bouncing back and forth to my spreadsheets.

I wanted to share a little tip with those who are new to the league- the rankings really don't matter (stars). Some things worth checking out are competition level, personality rankings, etc. Also check the signability rating for a player, it usually means you will have to pay through the nose to sign them.

Another point worth noting, if it hasn't been mentioned yet, is that it's all done in one sim.

Yes, this. Just a heads-up for our new owners, I don't stop ahead of time for the draft, so get your lists in. Although the AI usually does a bang-up job on drafting by itself.

Oh yeah? Then why do I still have crap for catcher prospects? Damn AI...

You need catcher prospects? Let's make a deal...

I didn't put any picks in for last year's draft and I got better talent than I thought I would. That said, garion is right about the AI probably not looking at need. I have a 3B I won't be sitting anytime soon, and two more in the minors that could be developed, then it used my highest pick last year on another nice 3B prospect. Trades are always a possibility though!

So I'm just getting my feet wet with version 14. Is there a game mode that more closely resembles what the league is like? Should I start with just a massive draft and build my team from scratch? Do you use fictional players?

So many questions...

One thing annoying about when the AI drafts is it doesn't like at signability. Last year I didn't put an draft list together and just about every player it drafted was hard or extremely hard to sign. I ended up only signing like 2 of the players because of that.

We do use fictional players. So learning to identify talent from rating is fairly important, but since we are 5 or 6 years in, we have a bit of backlog of stats you can sift through.

Fictional is the best way to learn the game imho. Knowing Barry Bonds is likely to be awesome is different than developing Player X from the minors.

I might be remembering wrong, but I thought that it did. Actually, it might just have been some sort of quality vs signing bonus expectation as I remember a lot of the guys at the bottom were horrible but asking for the world. I think I remember a disproportionate number of players being more difficult than you'd expect to sign. Perhaps it's better if you're in the big markets.

simpilot: To get ready for this league I just ran through part of a season using actual teams, up to about the draft. I knew almost nothing about baseball. Novocain and garion are probably right about some of the subtleties. I haven't been around long enough to see everything, I'm sure (1.5 seasons). It mostly seems pretty intuitive, though a lot of the mechanics are behind the scenes.

I have a starting pitcher with a ERA over 8.00 after nearly 10 starts. Oy. We are performing well below expectations so far this year.

Anyway, new file. Good lord are the good teams good.

EDIT: Oh, and in the interest of complete transparency, i'd like to deeply thank peedmyself for gifting me a copy of OOTP 14. He will receive no consideration from me as commissioner for this, because San Diego is playing .750 baseball. I hope Brian Burke blows his everything out. :p

Those teams better watch out--Portland's crawling up to the point of playing almost .500 baseball.

Yeah, I take back what I said about Brian Burke last season. That dude is a beast--I mean above .500 batting average?! It's like he's playing T-Ball out there.

I know it is early and things will undoubtedly change by the end of the season, however, I would like to point out that this is probably the first time in league history that Phoenix has a better record than Vancouver going into the month of June.
