Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U & 3DS) Catch-All

What I've found, going all the way back to Monster Hunter Freedom, is that it's very helpful to keep a decent melee weapon and a decent ranged weapon. Melee weapons are great damage-dealers, but if everyone's going melee they get in each others' way. They smack each other all over the place, they hit each others' shields and drain their stamina, it's a mess. But ranged weapons usually don't pack enough of a punch to get the job done quickly and easily, and with no melee characters front and center they have a hard time keeping some distance between the monster and their chewy gunner armor.

Short version: when I solo, I use melee. When I'm in a group and everyone else is melee, I go gunner to provide support.

Yesterday, I took out Great Jaggi with no problem, and then did the first capture quest with that big bear/armadillo thing on the first try.

Either I'm more geared up, or I'm just awesomer than when I tried this stuff in MH3 on the Wii. I don't remember Great Jaggi being this easy before. Too bad I have no desire to make the jaggi armor.

FTFY

Yesterday I did the hunt all large monsters with Great Jaggi (easy) and Pink Rathian (not so easy).

Dang it if her new head swipe plus fire didn't catch me out at least 4 times... only poisoned me once though, and it was just bad positioning on my part, not her new twisty flippy poison tail swipe. Which is cool. I like her new moves.

So finally I got her to the limping stage, and I went to capture her as she was sleeping in the nesting area, and OMG the stupid Bnahabra bug flew into the way of my tranq bombs and blocked them, and then she got out of the shock trap. Arrrrgh!

I would totally be in for playing tomorrow, so count me in the "n00b" group.

I should get added to the header for this. I'm drdoak9er on the Miiverse though, if you want to look me up in game.

What do I have to do to make it so my attacks don't just bounce off of the Barroth's big dumb head? Do i just need a higher weapon sharpness?

Cool. Thanks.

You're not gonna be able to make weapons that slice through his head until quite a while later, unfortunately. Blue sharpness usually does, white always does.

Green sharpness hammer and hunting horn won't bounce, I don't think. But they are impact weapons, vs. cutting weapons like everything else.

I've been mainly using dual swords. A change of weapon would be a welcome challenge. Once I figured out the mechanic of the hunting horn I've been eager to try it out. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

Are there any specific strategies involved in cutting off tails? I've only done it once to a Royal Ludroth in the Moga Woods.

Just gotta keep hitting them with cutting damage. It becomes easier once you have either other players or NPCs along to get the monster's attention and turn the tails toward you.

Doak, I'll be on in a bit. Wanna finish this part in Guacamelee.

That's it. I'm jumping into this right now for a bit. Am I too far behind to partake in some group hunts with all you expert hunters?

Nope, not at all. I'm not available tonight, but maybe tomorrow night we could do some hunts to help the newcomers? I'm open to that. Say from 9 - 11pm EST?

I missed this message. I'll probably start tomorrow night.

I'll hop on as a semi-beginner. If we're looking at 9pm est as a start time I can definitely be online and ready to go

I can probably be good to join around then, although I'll have to exit early (around 10 or so).

Can someone set up a room tonight and post it here? Maybe put it in the Beginners' lobby so it's easy to find.

Free play 2, lobby 2, name gwj, password stan!

Having played through most of Tri, I get the feeling that the monsters are a little bit easier on Wii U. On Tri, I often had to dig deep into my own potion supplies, but on U I rarely need to touch them.

I just left, so there's a spot open in this room! Doak, Lancejt, and JohnnyMojo are in there duking it out with HR2 monsters!

I've been trying to get 1 Monster Bone L from Barroth for about 8 fights, very frustrating getting that last items. Any tips for getting higher rank bones?

Try Rathian? There's no tips really, just keep doing the quests. The dreaded "Desire Sensor" might be on in your game. The only way to get what you need is to stop wanting it.

Hah I think you are right.

Yep, for example, I need Humspun Conch to make a new hunting horn. None of my fishing hauls are coming back with any. When I started the game, I had tons, but I converted or sold them all. Thems the breaks.

I remember Doak was looking for an Uragaan Ruby. I'm not, and I got two in two kills

I think I'll end up making the Steel Uragaan gunner set. Looks so weird.

I would like to play Monster Hunter right now, but my kids are watching TV. This off TV play patch can't come soon enough. Tomorrow, right?

I must have killed 3 dios solo and still no tail with the gunlance. If cha cha and kayamba could live longer than ten seconds, I could get my bow finished.

More than happy to help tomorrow if you want.

See, this is why I'm digging having this on the DS. My fiance and her mom wanted to watch the remake of Footloose. I finished off my jaggi armor set and upgraded my hammer.

I looked at the next upgrades for the long sword. I wish I could justify the bear dude version. It looks way cooler than the other one, but is more expensive with a worse sharpness curve. Maybe the next step up is better? Need to check the wiki.

So I put about 2 1/2 hours into this yesterday (sorry I still haven't gotten to any mutliplayer), and I essentially have just accepted my first guild quest and have gathered a bunch of stuff. Am I on the right pace?
