Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Uhhh, so they posted part 1 of their PAX East panel.

...

That was something.

And by something I mean not good. Not good at all.

I doubt I'm going to watch. What's so bad about it?

To me it seemed either too forced or they didn't prepare well enough. There was some bits they did with Harmonix that I didn't really "get", and then around the 40 minute mark...

Spoiler:

Random dude hands Ryan Davis a container that has "Anonymous Breast Milk" that Ryan than drinks for $200

It just seemed like their idea for their panel was just to show up and wing it. And it seems like they figured that was enough, but it didn't really click with me.

I dunno, I thought the panel was pretty awesome.

Spoiler:

Especially how they kept focusing in on Ryan after the breast milk. Man o' man did he seem to regret doing that!

That has pretty much been all their panels. 1 hour of just riffing because they clearly planned nothing, followed by 30 minutes of extremely awkward audience questions.

Yeah, this. It's like a slightly less structured Bombcast, with a much less filtered viewer mail section.

Yeah, I couldn't stop laughing...

Oh god it was funny.

Maybe "panel" isn't the right word for these anymore.

I just finished the first part and loving it so far. This is pretty much exactly what I expect from one of these "panels." The John Drake tracking software bit was pretty hilarious. And then he totally trolled them with a mairiachi band! And I'll admit it, the breast milk bit had me laughing my ass off. Maybe I'm a bad person for it, I don't even care! The look of abject despair on Ryan's face. Delicious.

I'm glad everyone else seems to have figured out what I've been saying for ages.

CptDomano is wrong and a bad person.

accurate

Hey now, I'm usually a pretty big supporter of what the GB crew does and most of the time I love all of the content they put out. It's just that that jokes didn't click with me this time around. No big whoop. Although I will say I did like Patrick/Alex sniping at each other--that was pretty amusing. And also when Alex asks John Drake "How do I get people to like me?".

But anonymous breast milk drinking? Various bands coming in to "interrupt" the panel? Come on, that's bush league stuff, man. Dude.

Yeah, I think that's been pretty well established

See, now that was hilarious

All is forgiven now?

The Beat Of Quick Looks are uniformly outstanding.

I gotta say I side with the side that thinks that overall the panel wasn't terribly funny.

It was amusing, and the milk episode was outrageous enough that it will probably be a bullet point in GB history for the foreseeable future, but there have been far funnier bits in previous quick looks and proper podcasts.

I did not know these existed. Even though I watch most of the quick looks anyway, I'm watching this series.

On man, you are in for a treat.

I thought this was crazy:

Apparently, giant bomb is ranked in the "lower" catagory of Metacritic's score weighting system. Of course this is probably to help smooth out the effect of their 5-point scale, but regardless, it still seems like a bleak indicator of just how out of touch the overall industry is with the hardcore gaming community if that is the case.

Part two of the PAX East Panel is now up. It's funny, part one reminded me how awesome some parts of PAX are and made me kinda sad to miss PAX East even if it would have cost me $1500 to attend. Part two reminded me of how much I hate some parts of PAX and made me start thinking of what else I can get for $1500.

Christ, why are the questions at the panels always so terrible? For ALL panels!

Even if the core question is okay, the people asking them try to awkwardly shoehorn inside jokes as the lead-up and it's just always terrible.

For the record, I'm somewhat on this side as well. While I know just chilling and letting things evolve naturally is kind of their thing, they do these panels twice a year so it's become a little tiresome for them to wing it completely, and in turn actually makes the whole thing somewhat unnatural as now they are forced to be funny and/or stretch for time. (When you really step back for a moment, you realize there is a LOT of dead air in these things.) I wouldn't say I hate watching them or anything, but if I was at PAX, they probably would be the last thing I would stand in line for because there would be far more interesting panels going on.

The same reason comments on any news site are awful, as is almost every caller on a radio call-in show. People who have horrible opinions or are charmless are the ones who think what they have to say is important or fascinating. PAX then adds in an extra dose of social ineptitude due to the nerd contigent.

That's TWO on my side, blind! WHAT SAY YOU NOW?!

I've got a list and it's now two longer?

Jk, jk.

More like 1.5...

I tweeted this "@PXAbstraction: Giant Bomb has made a successful Kickstarter out of trolling a Harmonix employee. The Internet's next evolution has arrived!" and John Drake retweeted it. And then a ton of other people retweeted it too. My day has accomplished something. Or at least that's what I tell myself.

Hooray!

The DOTA2 TNT was utterly fantastic. If you don't have the patience to sync them for dual commentary, stick with the commentary feed. The caster does a fair enough job, and both Patrick and Jeff had entertainingly opposite approaches. FYI, the gameplay feed has audio issues until a fair ways in.
