Playstation 4 Games Catch-All

I'm not sure I've seen Jeanne D’Arc on sale before. Looks like a permanent price change to $14.99 from $22.99.

Guacamelee is perfect! I've been wanting a game like this since Shadow Complex.

I dunno if I'd say perfect, as I don't like the placement of the dodge button or the lack of control customization, but it's really good. Also the meme/other game referencing is a bit heavy handed. Feels like the game doesn't need it. A little nod to influential games is a really charming touch in some games, but they do it so constantly here that it's just distracting.

Hmm, game also seems to have a freezing problem. I had it freeze the PS3 a moment ago, about 5 minutes after I saw it freeze on the GB QL.

Dodge on Vita works fine, is it also L1 on PS3?

I haven't found the references to be heavy handed, could be I'm just not up on current memes. It's certainly a game that doesn't take itself seriously, but I was expecting that. In fact, given how Mutant Blobs turned out, I would have been disappointed if the game hadn't been full of nods and pop culture references.

I hope I get that 10 dollar back from PSN soon so I can put it towards Guacamelee.

It's L2 on PS3, or the right stick. I'd be a happy camper if I could switch it to R1 or R2.

You don't need to really be up on pop culture, half the stuff is game-related. Castle Crashers, Mutant Blobs Attack, Mario and Luigi, Majora's Mask, Link in general, and Megaman are all referenced on posters in the same screen (Combo Chicken's Gym). They're plastered all over the towns, too. Minecraft, Viva Pinata, you name it.

That's all just background stuff though, which is easy enough to ignore. The more active references are the ones that get to me. There's recurring Super Metroid references, and the sequence to end the Rain Temple really made me groan:

Spoiler:

You use an axe to cut the bridge out from under the monster you've been running from, then a lady says "Sorry but your princess is in another castle."

If that's not heavy-handed, I don't know what is. I get it dudes, we both played some video games. Drinkbox does a great job of subtly giving their games a unique flavor, and all this referential stuff just seems totally unnecessary. Or at least the sheer volume of it. I remember a couple nods per level in MBA. This game's beating me over the head with them every thirty seconds.

Grumpy Cat, Trollface, and Trolololo have made appearances. I'm guessing there are plenty more that I've not seen yet.

Frankly this type of thing doesn't age well (ask Duke Nukem), and the weird thing is that the rest of the game is really fun. I don't understand the need for all this noise.

Guess I'm gonna have to try this out with all the good talk it's been getting.

Guacamelee is a load of fun. Beating up a bunch of bad guys by flinging enemies is very cool. Also, it plays quick - the game has a fast pace, and if you de, you are immediatly put back into the action. Thirdly, it features literal loot piñatas! I'm just smiling the whole time I'm playing.

I picked up and played a couple hours worth of Demon's Souls off PS+ and I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. I heard a lot about how hard it is starting off but I feel like I breezed through the first level and killed the Phalanx demon without dying. I'm playing a Wanderer. I only had one legit death to a blue eyed knight but went back through and handily beat him. My other death was a stupid fall close to the beginning of the level so it wasn't a problem to get my souls back there either.

The combat is very logical. Seems easy to learn/hard to master. I'm sure it gets tougher, but I heard a lot about people putting this game down within the first 30 minutes because of the difficulty and I'm just not getting that.

That's pretty impressive to do the first level without dying. It's been a while but I remember getting killed by all sorts of traps and ambushes. Were you using a guide? Did you play Dark Souls first?

I meant above that I had defeated the demon boss without dying, but I did die once to the blue knight at the top of the castle wall, and I fell to my death being an idiot trying to take stairs too quickly. I didn't use a guide though and I haven't played Dark Souls. I just proceeded through the level pretty carefully, tried to lure out one or two enemies at a time instead of taking on a whole bunch, and just plodded my way through. I rolled away from enemy attacks a lot.

There were plenty of hints written on the floor, which I checked everywhere I went. There were warnings on the floor for pretty much every enemy ambush and sneaky enemy around a corner. The toughest part was probably the red dragon on the bridge, but I figured out that I could sprint out, lure the dragon, and he flew over and burned all but two guys to death.

The only thing I didn't do was explore one of the towers that had a warning that you should be level 30 before proceeding written on the ground. I looked that up and I guess there's a particularly difficult red knight there guarding some loot.

World tendencies can effect the difficulty. It could be that 1-1 is in the white, which means it's much easier.

Could be, though I have not a clue how to tell or what that even means. I haven't don't a lot of homework on this game yet. I'm enjoying the heck out of it, though.

Yes, probably pure white tendency. Even so, getting through all of 1-1 and past Phalynx with anything less than 10 deaths on your first time playing a Souls game is very impressive.

If you're enjoying it that much already, stick with it. It is truly a masterpiece, and Dark Souls will be patiently waiting for you when you finish to give you more goodness

I should have added that it's still impressive to get through it with as few deaths as you did. I never thought Demon's Souls was very difficult either, it's just not forgiving if you make a mistake, in hind-sight. I hope that makes sense.

Not forgiving, but death isn't quite as punishing as I thought it would be. I really don't mind re-treading the same parts of levels, especially if I can get to my bloodstain to reclaim my souls (and keep all the new souls captured fighting my way there).

I just got my $10 credit for spending $50 last month.

Yup, I'll be nabbing Thomas Was Alone.

Dang. I just bought guacamelee. I am tempted by The Show, so maybe that will go towards it.

Anyone played Rainbow Moon?

Search is your friend. There's a whole thread about it.

Also, some mentions of it in the JRPG thread, but that thread is massive.

I have not, but I thought I'd mention that they are coming out with a Vita version sometime this year. I've heard the game is massive, so it might be a good time waster if you have to travel a lot.

I picked up The Show during the promotion - best baseball game I've ever played.

I don't know if this is a spoiler for Guacamelle, or if I'm just being precautionary.

Spoiler:

Has anyone got past the platforming bit at the very top of the Tule Tree. There is some pretty tough platforming up there

Yes. I was pretty surprised by that difficulty curve when I went through last night. I can't remember, though, whether that was for purely optional content (chests) or for the mainline story path.

I got to the second-to-last boss (I assume) last night and managed to get through after probably close to 50 tries. Up until this fight I had found pretty much all of the boss fights pretty easy to gauge, beating them within a couple of tries.

There's more than just one special area. I've been loving them. They truly test my luchador skills. I think I've gone through all of the content before the last area. There's not quite another feeling like having all your skills in a metroidvania game.

I got to the part with the saws, how much further do I have to go?
