Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U & 3DS) Catch-All

Awww, that sucks. I'm pretty sure the 3DS is only for local MP with the WiiU. And I don't think the person with the WiiU can take a local MP person into an Internet session. At least I'm pretty sure. I'll do some checking.

I think you can play local MP with other 3DSs, or with a Wiiu somehow. Since I just have the 3ds, I'm solo only, and it's cool.

Yeah, that's how it works--you can play local with other 3DS players or a WiiU can be the host for local play with a WiiU. What you can't do is use a 3DS to connect to a WiiU, then have the WiiU try to go online.

The only restriction is the Wii U must be wired by ethernet, I believe. I have no idea why that is a restriction, but it is.

Thanks to Blind_Evil and drdoak letting me tag along this past weekend, I'm HR3 these days for the online, and I'm in the three-star quests for offline too. I'm basically just to where I'd like to be getting lots of materials for weapon upagrades and better armor, but money's good for that too, so I'd happily team up for some lower-level/about my level stuff. Once the off-TV patch hits on the 16th and is confirmed working, I'll be available for quite a bit more online play.

Also: Certis, enjoyed hearing where you're at on the CC this week! I'm hoping you round that bend to "fun time" soon. It sounds like you're really close.

Happy to help, Ian. I had fun getting my murder on, plus it netted me a sweet set of gunner armor and enough materials to fill in some gaps from my little library of weapons.

I'm onto the 2 star quests. I bought a new set of chain armor from a vendor but that's about it. I'm trying to trap an armadillo bear thing. It's being kind of a bastard, though.

Yeah, that dude is a butt. Not sure if this is weapon specific, but I was able to hit him enough that he flipped over, then I just dropped the trap next to him as he was trying to stand up. 'Course, I was using the Long Sword, which has high damage output.

Look for the monster to limp (not the I'm exhausted and drooling sort of stagger, but a clear limp) and leave the zone. In the next zone, it will be sleeping or trying to get food, and I find that there is the easiest place to trap them in either a shock trap or a pitfall trap. Once they're in the trap, throw two tranquilizers at them and they'll be captured.

I find the Arzuros limp to not be very clear, so I tend to accidentally kill him. I remember it being like a big butt wiggle though.

Aaaaand I didn't think to do that before, but that works out a lot better than my method

So far I've had luck just throwing the trap and then aggroing the target beastie into it. I guess I shouldn't keep expecting it work quite like that, huh?

That works too, for sure. You have to do that if they aren't sleeping or getting food, even. I want to caution against setting it up in the zone where it starts to limp. A lot of wasted traps happened in my life and the problem is with a lot of newer players, they don't take the trap tool and thunderbugs for additional ones. Heck, I don't take additional traps with me at all in multiplayer.

Not all of us are trap masters, Ian!

Hey, no worries. I still waste paintballs about 1/3 of the time.

Yes to the wasted traps, definitely can relate to that. The worst is when you misjudge the readiness of the monster and use up all your traps without capturing it.

Also sometimes monsters can destroy your traps if they come out of the ground under it (I'm looking at you, Agnaktor!) so that's super frustrating.

The best is when you trap the monster, tranq bomb it but it doesn't fall asleep, then manage to hit it enough in the next few seconds that it's health falls low enough that its capture able, and you win! I had that happen, only once.

Good things to know, gamerparent. Wasn't aware of the trap-destruction issue at all.

Good old Brachy smashed one of my traps with his rage jumps as well. That won't happen often though unless you're trapping like I was to try to bust some slime loose.

Got a room up, stan is the password. Free play 2 lobby 1.

Thanks all for letting me hunt with you last evening. It was a good hour for me just to unwind after a long work day and take down Brachydios and see Zinorge for the first time.

I hope you all enjoyed a taste of Negate Stamina Usage, lol. Definitely looking at acquiring all the horns that feature that particular song for future weapons.

I think I've hit a mental wall with single player. I'm playing on 3DS and don't have anyone to play with locally. I've soloed my way to the HR2 guild quests and I'm failing quests pretty frequently. Now I'm starting to hesitate before I play the game because I don't want to spent 30-40 minutes of my game time only to fail and have nothing to show for the time I've put in.

My most recent hunt had me lose to Duramboros. He's slow and lumbering so I was sort of baffled and disheartened when I failed the quest. I guess I just got unlucky: I was stunned by one attack and he immediately charged me before I could recover.

Maybe I'll put MoHun down for a while and play something else; I might just be burned out from playing it so much. I'm sure I'll hear the hunting horn's call again before too long.

That's it. I'm jumping into this right now for a bit. Am I too far behind to partake in some group hunts with all you expert hunters?

I know the feeling, I had lots of trouble with Duramboros. As Blind_Evil suggested to me, maybe try a different weapon? I know that when I switched from Hunting Horn to Hammer I had an easier time with him. Or maybe try gunning? He's weak to poison, you could try poison shots. And gunning would put you away from him and his spin-y attack.

Nope, not at all. I'm not available tonight, but maybe tomorrow night we could do some hunts to help the newcomers? I'm open to that. Say from 9 - 11pm EST?

It is a real shame that the 3ds cannot do online without the WiiU. I do have some local friends with the DS game so I hope to try that sometime. Maybe for the next version of the game I'll have a WiiU or the DS version will include online.

It's been confirmed that Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS will do on-line.

sweet!

I've been considering MH3 on the 3ds as a warmup for MH4 anyway.

Now all we need to do is make sure MH3U sells a lot so that they will bring MH4 to the West.

Yeah that sounds good. I'll be available tomorrow.

Also 1 more Baleful Giggi for the completion of my armor set. Hoozah.

I never considered ranged weapons! I always figured they were only good in multiplayer with a melee buddy to keep the monster's attention (like a tank+ranged dynamic in MMOs). I definitely want to try them, maybe I'll try the gun lance.

Gunlance isn't really ranged, it's just a lance that you can make explosions with. Bow and Bowgun (light and heavy) are the ranged weapons.

Also there's no concept of aggro that I've seen. You just have a 1/x chance of being targeted (x is the number of players/NPCs).

There is a threat armor skill too.

I admit I was wrong about lances. I took down single player plesioth in one try with a lagi gun lance. That might be a go to for single player.

Oh, I see :/ well, I'll try something else to play with ranged, then (good thing I read this thread before I sunk a buncha resources into a gunlance!)

I just fought an Agnaktor and that is a seriously cool monster. All MoHun needed to do to keep me interested was give me a dragon made of lava. I'm back in.

Also worth noting: gunners (bow and bowgun) use different sets of armor than blademasters (generally half the armor and different skills/looks). They also have an extra page in their item pouch for ammo.

There is an armor skill called Sense, where at +10 it will give you the Sneak skill, decreasing your likelihood of being targeted by monsters, and at -10 it will give you Taunt, increasing the likelihood that a monster will target you.

Taunt is good if you're a hammer user, since you're usually trying to hit the head anyway. A little bit scary though, but that's the life of a hammer user anyway...

I have to back out of Friday night helping beginners, I forgot that we have company for dinner, so I'm not available! whoops!

Sorry to have to bow out. Maybe Saturday, if anyone wants.
