Gamer Podcasts

It was terrific. The Infinite discussion was especially good. They brought up most my main issues, and alot came from Cannata! Hell, even the sign-offs were golden. Did that really just happen? Maybe I should finally stop listening now.

And I feel the opposite about the Joystiq podcast. I have never hated Doritos more in my life. My ears need a big hug.

For fans of A Life Well Wasted: Robert Ashley and Olly Moss were both guests on Giant Bomb's live show last week. As is usual with their shenanigans, little of substance is said.

Yeah, Jeff mirrored a lot of my thoughts about BI, though I'm not quite as bullish on the shooty bits.

Leahy was great throughout, but his finishing move almost brought a tear to my eye. It was the perfect way to go out, and hopefully it won't be another two years before he comes back on the show.

I had to stop listening even though I enjoy the podcast generally and would have liked to have heard what they had to say. There aren't many worse sins for a podcast than chomping on food. Ugh.

A Jumps B shoots posted their April Fool's episode. The description notes that it's their last episode. I'm not listening in the middle of the night as I'm just up for a pee-and-skim-feeds break, but I can't suss out whether it's really the end or if that's part of the joke. If it is, I'm sad, because I really enjoy this podcast.

Anyone know more?

So this isn't really a podcast so apologies for that up front but I didn't want to make my own thread for this and since the video creators thread seems to be reserved more for discussion among creators themselves, I just wanted to pimp my new YouTube series, Retro Flashback. It's a show that I'm trying to do two episodes of a week that showcases retro titles from various eras and systems and attempts not only to show off the games and explain them but also talk about why they're historically important to the medium. Basically, the idea is to showcase the roots of video gaming to a new generation of young people who may not have experienced them, as well as give some nostalgia to us old fogies. I actually did a dedicated video intro and blog post that goes into much greater detail.

I'm seeking feedback so feel free to toss anything my way, good or bad. This is an evolving process and I'm doing it both to hone my presentation skills and to get better at the craft itself. My biggest issue right now is terrible audio consistency between episodes. I'm well aware of this and trying to come up with a solution but budget constraints this month might make it tricky. I'll get it sorted though. All of my episodes also get submitted to /r/gaming and I could use some upvotes there if people want. In a massive sea of video game content on YouTube, this is something that no one else is really doing so I'm hoping to spread the word and get some interest going as I hope people will find it useful.

Anyway, that's my little plug. Hope you guys like it!

Subscribed. I LOVED Rolling Thunder.

I still think Code Name: Viper was better but Rolling Thunder was pretty good. I'm hoping once I get my capture setup refined, that I can start capturing some stuff of wackier platforms, including some older computers as well.

The Dumptruck is now on iTunes. Here's an interesting man to get you started.

http://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/20...

That's the best one of the lot so far. The guy is so incredibly blunt and fascinating.

I got Parallax and Mystic Violet, plus a couple other friends, to join me again for another round of Downloathable Content.

I think after this one I'm going to start looking into what it takes to get on iTunes and Zune, because now that my friend Sean is encoding it Zune doesn't like to categorize it under podcasts.

For iTunes, all you need is a well formed RSS feed. Just submit that to Apple's podcast directory and you'll show up in the store in a few days. They have a bunch of info for you on the matter: https://www.apple.com/itunes/podcast... I assume the requirements for Zune (and Stitcher, etc.) are going to be pretty much the same.

Anyone still dying for nostalgia should check out Watch Out for Fireballs if you haven't already. They essentially just play a classic game each week and then talk about it.

Thanks for your suggestion, Kuddles! I started listening, and am greatly enjoying the WOfF podcast! I do find that I enjoy the episodes a lot more if I've played the game (or at least had an interest in it, as was the case for Vampires: The Masquerade: Bloodlines).

Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion, and I definitely recommend it myself.

Thirding WOfF. I came to it after blitzting all the available Bonfireside Chat eps (same hosts, also recommended by kuddles) and have found it to be some of the more entertaining retrogame podcasts going. Extra love for the anecdote about playing live-action Mega Man 2 as kids in the Mega Man X episode - how many youths equipped an arm cannon by simply pulling their hand up their sleeve? I know I sure did.

So because I'm mad and managing one YouTube show wasn't enough for me, Stylez and I have decided to launch another one. I'd like to introduce you all to Two Guys & A Game. At it's most basic root, this is a co-op focused Let's Play series but Stylez and I like to think we bring our own brand of kooky snark to the commentary. We're starting off with a hum dinger, the latest Army of Two game but we're going to be playing a bunch of titles from different platforms and eras, though only one at a time so we have to get through The Devil's Cartel first. We also may do some special one-off episodes once in a while that are focused on things like spoiler discussions or showcasing a particular series that we like. Like with my Retro Flashback show, please feel free to promote this to everyone you know. We're really excited to be doing this and hope to drive some awareness to it. The audio quality in this first episode is so-so due to Elgato Game Capture HD and Virtual Audio Cable software being asstacular but I hope to improve this going forward. Enjoy and please give feedback in the comments if you want.

The new Joystiq podcast is up and they mention 'putting away the food.' I think they realise it was a mistake. Lots of info on Thief.

Haven't listened in a while. Were they doing live commercials or were they trying to work it into the broadcast like saying, "So I was eating Doritos at GDC..."?

I think it was more that they were eating while recording, so you heard the crunch crunch chew chew sounds.

Yes. Eating sounds galore. If anything they put me off Doritos for a good month or two.

I've started listening thanks to this thread - great suggestion. I'm enjoying the Fallout/Fallout 2 episodes and will keep coming back.

The latest Weekend Confirmed just wore me out. Garnett is fine, but like so many hosts, he's too glib for my tastes. Not that we've talked enough about Garnett, right?

Really, it was Nicole. I have never dug shallowness-as-schtick, and the way she does the Story Time segment makes me crazy.

Trying to skip all the Bioshock Infinite chatter has really cut down on my podcast listening time this past week!

Fourthded(?) I'm also a big fan after listening to the their Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Tactics episodes. Really good stuff - I could talk (and listen to people talk) about FFT for hours, so it was nice to hear some more about that game again.

Again, if you're into retrogaming, definitely check the Upper Memory Block Podcast. I like it a bit better than WOfF, maybe because I've been listening to it longer. But I like that the UMBcast has structure, a set time frame, and I find the host a lot more dynamic (even then he's solo'ing this, pretty impressive feat to keep the listener engaged when you're doing this on your own).
The UMB podcast just reached its first year anniversary and covered Fallout to celebrate, so I'm sure that'll interest some of you.

Scrolling down, I can see that the most recent page for Upper Memory Block has eps on a ton of games I care about - X-Wing, The Incredible Machine, King's Quest, Full Throttle, Alone in the Dark...unless it's horrible, I'm sold. Thanks Eleima!

More like past two weeks

I tried listening to the X-Wing episode of UMB but the guy started talking about Planetscape: Torment. I just had to stop listening. I will forgive a lot but that crosses the line.

I think you hear that more often that not.

According to Downcast my Gaming playlist has just shot up to 43 hours worth of retro gaming podcast goodness. Glad I stumbled on this thread. Thanks for the great suggestions!

Really? I have maybe heard it a handful of times. Whatever. Just inordinately bugged me beyond reason in this case and so stopped listening.
