Batman: Arkham Origins Catch-All

Pages

The next Batman Arkham game was announced today. It's a prequel in the same universe as the previous two games.

Batman: Arkham Origins Revealed

I'm in. Haven't even looked at the page. Where can I preorder?

I'm very on the fence about any of the little bit of information I've seen on this so far. Rocksteady is apparently not involved in it (the guys that did the first two Arkham games) so I immediately go towards cash grab territory...but who knows!

Announced for current gen hardware and not being developed by Rocksteady. Yikes!

...and no Kevin Conroy or Mark Hamil either I've heard.

You guys are killing independent Batman!

I take that kind of a good sign because it means Rocksteady are given plenty of time to make their followup to city for next-gen platforms. But, yeah, less enthusastic about yet another franchise I like being annualized with prequels and sequels until I can't be bothered even looking at them.

No Mark Hamill was a given because he's retired from voice acting. Rocksteady basically did a lot of begging just to get him to do it for City.

Yeah, I think the warning bells went off on this one back in February when Time Warner's CFO confirmed there would be a new Batman Arkham game this year. Never a good sign when a game is announced out of the blue with such a short date till release by a non-game company. Course word that Rocksteady and the writer of the first two games weren't involved quickly followed...

I've loved the first two games, but this third one just makes me nervous.

Obviously we don't know what Warner Bros. Montreal will do with the Arkham franchise, but given that, I am with kuddles in being less than thrilled about more annualization of vidja games. As for Rocksteady having more time to do their own thing, that's great! Although I'm not too interested in a silver age comics Batman game (if that's still the word on the street).

I had forgotten about that rumor. Origins seems to be the same universe and art style. Almost like a "Year: One" to the previous two games. Maybe the silver age game is what Rockstar is working on for next gen?

Now I am curious about what Rocksteady is going to release next if it is not a Batman game. What have they been working on?

I am pretty lukewarm on this one. I tend to think that prequels are lazy releases. We will see.

I'm all the more curious of what Rocksteady is working on, truth told. It could be that they wanted to take a break from Batman and this is what Warner Bros. did in the meantime.

The question is, what sort of game are we looking at? A Call of Duty: Black Ops, a Bioshock 2, or an Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood/Revelations/Black Flag?

I believe Rocksteady is still working on a Silver Age Batman game, which I imagine is next gen. This WB Montreal game appears to be an opportunity to squeeze out another Batman game on this generation using the existing engine. Hopefully it will still be a good game and not just a money-grab.

So... umm... very little combat in this one?

I mean it's one thing to have a game set in a prison being controlled by crime lords with hordes of criminals who generally hate the main character. It's something else to have a game set in a city, even one with a high crime rate, were the main antagonists are assassins, most of which probably don't normally have mobs of henchmen around them...

No Rocksteady, no "Best Joker" or "Best Batman" and not the writer of the previous two games that were awesome?

...well, this went from Day 1 pick-up to a wait and see, maybe for my birthday in early December.

I need to stop watching trailers on mute while at work. That video told me nothing.

"Origins"? Generic game name generator strikes again!!

Seriously though, I'll wait and see what the feedback on this one is. I'd play another Batman Arkham game though... so there's that!

Given what the video said, they should have gone with Batman: Arkham Assassins. That's much more original right? :p

I'm less than eager to delve into Batman Meets the Villains for the First Time. None of them have been radically reconceived in such a way to make that fruitful ground. The way previous games treated it as a given that they'd all encountered each other before was actually refreshing, it skipped over lot's of tedious MO exposition. These characters are old, we mostly know who they are, and can easily guess what their early encounters were like--they didn't end well.

I'm skeptical, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Rocksteady was a nobody, too, and look how that turned out.

At one point the words "World's Finest" were thrown around, implying they were thinking of adding Superman to the mix. Has there been any more buzz on that front?

Though now that I stop and think about it, I expect the WB overlords would put a stop to that so as not to "confuse the market" around the Superman movie reboot. Though the first two Arkham games overlapped with Nolan's Batman movies, so who knows?

The first one was great, the second one alright, but I think I'm done with this series unless I get it cheap on sale or they do something amazing. I think you need a good reason to put out three very similar games in a row, let a lone four assuming Rocksteady has another one in the cooker, but I guess these were successful enough for them to have to.

Batman... BEYOND. (God, I wish.)

Future-tech flying Batman in a dystopian future open-world Gotham City with a cranky, old, bitter Bruce Wayne barking at you the whole game?

I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but I would totally buy this. It's still one of my favorite Batman series. Would appreciate the rocket boots over the gliding mechanics from Arkham City.

I didn't mean it to be sarcastic at all. I loved the series and would totally buy this if it was done with the same quality as Arkham Asylum.

Sums up how I feel.
