The Big Board-Gaming Catch-All

FSeven — Trying to get some boardgame nights up and running SOON! Will be in touch.

EDIT: Also, glad you jumped on Myth. I can't afford to right now.

If hosting is an issue, I'd be happy to offer up my house for gaming nights once I run it by wifey. We recently finished the basement which would be perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I had no idea how robust and extensive this world is. So many choices...

Jaipur and Lost Cities are two great head to head card games that are also friendly to pick up for newer players.

Jaipur is a big hit with my wife and me: light, two-player, competitive but no really direct confrontation. Lots of fun.

Gloom, and San Juan are other really fun light card games.

I would add Lords of Waterderp, Ascension, Roll through the Ages and Ticket to Ride Nordic and Swiss maps to that list of great two player games that my wife and I enjoy.

Demyx and I can second all these except Roll through the Ages (we don't have that yet). Quarriors! is also good fun for two.

I love Roll With The Ages. Played the hell out of it on yucata.

Roll Through the Ages is very fun. Played it at MinPenCon last year.

Myth

I've spent the last 3 hours in an online chat with turbotax so don't want to read all the text, but the pictures are interesting. Really, I just clicked that because of Myth: The Fallen Lords. Is there any commonality between the two, or is this something completely, completely different?

Sorry, about the late reply. But, as far as I can tell, this game has nothing to do with The Fallen Lords. I ended up backing it, but I really have got to stay away from Kickstarters.com so many things that look sooooo good

So far I've backed Dungeon Roll, Zombicide Season 2, Flashpoint: Extreme Danger, and Myth. I definitely have a type

Tell me about it. I've spent wayyyy too much on Kickstarter in the past 2 months.

Cragmyre wrote:

Zombicide Season 2,

I missed out on that one. I decided to go to ebay to look for a lightly used Zombicide game and I see people selling Zombicide plus some of the Kickstarter bonuses for upwards of $1,000. Makes me wonder if I should actually play Myth or sell it in a year with all the stretch goal bonuses and put a down payment on a new truck.

After getting a few wonderful board games that my wife is not really interested in playing, and as infrequently as I can get to boardgame events, I'm pulling my KS reins back too. I'm backing stinkyboard now because I'll use that thing immediately, and the Jeff Cannata show, whatever that works out to be, but I think I'll wait for you all to tell me a board game is beyond awesome after it's published from now on. Unless temptation is too strong, of course.

I'm pretty pumped to pick this up next weekend...

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but there is an Eminent Domain Expansion Kickstarter.

Got Love Letter to the table after playing a couple rounds of Skyline. Just me and the wife. Man, that game is a blast.

We played three rounds; I won two out of three. So many crazy things happen and we both laughed lots. For $10, everyone should own this game. Seriously.

Just picked up two games last night that you've all been hyping: Sentinels of the Multiverse and Love Letter.

My fiance and I loved Love Letter - light, quick, and guaranteed to elicit a "f*ck you, you bastard" from the lady of the house. Sentinels was a good time as well, but it will take a few more playthoughs to get her hooked. I think it's a great Magic-style card mechanic, coupled with awesome flavor and setting. Highly recommended, and makes me want to buy all the expansions ASAP.

Quick question for you all: what does flipping Omnitron's hero back and forth do? Does it impact anything?

Uh, yes, I don't have it sitting in front of me right now but it is important. One side, you play an additional villain card. The other side, you shuffle the trash and resurrect a drone/device. IIRC.

Well I'll be. There's a back side to those cards. Who knew?

Has anyone played "Super Dungeon Explore"? I won it at Tabletop Day at my FLGS. It's got a good rating over at BGG, but the amount of minis that need assembly is kinda freakin' me out

Haha, that's kind of important. Not flipping some villains makes the game literally unwinnable

On the other hand, it makes some villains much easier!

Minarchist — your comment got me to pick up Love Letter while I was in Compleat Strategist yesterday after our visit with our Tax Guy. (Funny how I always end up there after seeing our tax guy...)

Anyway, the wife and I played it last night with another couple and really really liked it. My only problem with the game is how cheap the components are. Crummy little wood blocks for tokens? Cheaply made standard-sized playing cards? I know. I know. That's how they keep the price down to an easy-to-pick-up-on-the-spur-of-the-moment-$10. But I would LOVE a deluxe version of the game with Elizabethan sized/designed cards. Oversized, thick, with stylized art... I might have to make a set of my own, actually. And get some red gems to use as tokens.

It was a quick night so the only other game we got in was King of Tokyo — first time playing with four people. A lot of fun was had. Might have to get the expansion.

Played Quarriors with the Mrs. for the first time last night. She loved it. She's already a big fan of Dominion and Ascension, and the addition of dice to the deck building mechanic was enough to make her an instant fan.

I enjoyed it as well of course, especially the part when we finished where she ordered me to immediately purchase both of the expansions for the personal collection and a full set for the castle as well.

Those aren't "crummy little wood blocks" those are SMOOCH CUBES, dammit.

Watch the Watch It Played series for a great gameplay example. Side note - I'm doing my best to raise my son to be just like his eight year old

I agree. I hate card sleeves but I'm sleeving this game. The crummy cards, how incredibly often they get shuffled, and the fact that one of them getting marked could spell doom for the game is a perfect storm of requiring sleeves.

I'm really looking forward to a small gaming "con" tomorrow in my area (Delaware). I'll spend the day playing boardgames with fellow nerds.

Right now it looks like we'll be bringing:
• Dungeon Command
• Castle Ravenloft (or one of the other D&D adventure games)
• Android Netrunner
• X-Wing
• Marvel Legendary
• A Game of Thrones (2nd Ed.)
• Lords of Waterdeep

Obviously we likely won't have time to play all of those, but it should be fun. Now I just need to decide if I will be bringing beer or scotch to drink over the course of the day.

I'm having a small gathering at my house on Sunday as well. Board games will be played of course, but the highlights of the day will be a session of Tremulus run by our very own Tanglebones, and a playtest of a card game that will be hitting Kickstarter in a few weeks or months called Gothic Doctor. Should be a fun day.

Awesome. Why is it that, when I hear "Gothic Doctor" I think of a lot of dull, rusty knives?

I haven't seen it yet, but for some reason I think you might be right.

It's probably a game where people attach leeches to their foreheads, and try to guess the size. Every time they guess wrong, a Barbie doll gets its hair cut. Person with the longest-haired Barbie doll at the end wins. Seriously, doctors evolving from barbers is so bizarre - even more than using leeches.

I'll suggest the addition of live leeches in the box when it ships. When the Kickstarter goes live I'll post about it here.

While we don't have as exciting a gathering going on this weekend, Demyx and I are hoping to try and show a couple of friends Sentinels of the Multiverse. Which will be interesting because co-op games don't usually go down all that well if we lose.
