Far Cry 3

All of my playthrough so far has been minimalist and no tagging. I've paid the price for it a couple of times, but I know its been more intense than the alternative. I just couldn't switch it back on again.

I do like the 'only scavenged weapons' rule, though. That seems plausible enough.

The big advantage of being minimal with weapons is that if forces you to do the takedowns, use the bow and to fight smart. The combat is much more engaging. I'm actually getting very attached to the game.

On the Rebel FM podcast there was mention of a single player expansion being in the works, which would be good.

If you haven't tried co-op yet then do. It's fun. Play the intro movie first. The whole enterprise is worth it for the Scottish gentleman.

This is on sale on Steam at the moment, and I am seriously considering it. I am using a Lenovo Y580 with 8gb ram, a 660M and an i73630QM. I realise that I am not going near Ultra settings, but will I get a relatively playable experience? Steam says that mobile versions of the Nvidia cards are not supported.

It appears you'll get most settings/options at a decent resolution.

Unfortunately, I bought this only a few weeks ago. A £15 discount would have been nice! I mostly enjoyed what I played of the game though so I can't really complain. Running on a Phenom II 955 and stock GTX 560 (1GB DDR 5) with 4GB RAM and I can pretty much max it at 1600x900 (monitor resolution)... so it really depends on what resolution you plan on using as to the performance you can expect. I don't think the game is really too demanding on the graphical front to make it look good - kinda like Crysis 2.

Anyone out there know if Far Cry 3 supports XP?

Thanks Duoae. I saw that thread too, but GameFAQs...never too sure! I think I'll grab it tomorrow.

PaladinTom, according to the spec on Steam, it will run on XP.

Just started playing this this morning... before I get too far in, I have to ask a question... am I seriously playing one of those douchey, spoiled, "look at my dads black card", frat boys in the opening 5 minute cinematic? If there's some reveal later, feel free to tell me to wait and see, but I was kind of rooting for the bad guys at that point.

It would explain the nice phone he had.

Finished the campaign a bit earlier, overall well impressed with the game (prob second behind dishonored as the best game of last year). I ended up using the controller instead of the mouse/keyboard as it was easier to drive that way. The world was a joy to run around in, just killing bandits on the road, running from bears/tigers, letting enemies get mauled by predators, sneaking around camps to clear them out & get them as a base (if you don't get seen) were really fun & that's just all exploring/side quest kinda stuff. I absolutely loved both Vaas & Buck, easily the best characters that have been in a game since Uncharted 3 & Portal 2.

I found the story to be good enough simply because the characters performances were that good. Jason Brody starts of annoying, yet the more you get into it there's something human about him, he's a whimpering boyband wannabe at the start, he then starts to build confidence & becomes more & more likeable especially with the interactions of the friends he has to rescue. I really loved the fire spreading amongst the grass & having it destroy (to an extent) the terrain around you. The weapons system was way too forgiving as some of you have said above but I took advantage of using everything. Wish I hadn't now, could have been a lot more challenging, I did die enough saying that.

Is the testing unit worth a play? I have still got it to do. I wasn't gonna go near co-op as a right few websites mentioned it felt weak & repetitive compared to the single player but since Higgledy recommended it I might give it a go.

The testing unit is pretty forgettable (as indicated by the fact that I can't remember what happened in it.) I think it's more interior spaces with combat and platforming. You aren't missing anything spectacular.

I've been mainly avoiding this thread but have around 7 hours into the game so far. I was never a huge side-quest type of guy but find if I open up an area I can't NOT do all the quests before moving on. It's put me at a surplus for skill points but overall I'm really pleased with the game so far. I wish I picked it up when it was "all the rage" but still really enjoying it. 3 things I've noticed:

1) Radio towers. I have spent more time than I should just checking out how cool things look from that high up
2) Hunting quests - WOW what a difference it made to concentrate on those. Bigger loot bags, more ammo. Entirely worth it to get those done first
3) Everyone on the island has a gambling problem. They also have a problem where they leave chips and random dice everywhere

Im a little farther along. You are not alone in starting late.

Love it... but watch out for tigers... damn them...

Heh, in retrospect, I think of this as a great game despite its story, instead of because of it. The general free-roaming and base clearing is tons of fun.

The guys at Giant Bomb who did the quicklook video had the same reaction you did.

I'll be getting to this one soon, as soon as I finish ME3 (not a joke) and Bioshock: Infinite. I hope I like it as much as everyone else seems to.

You'll enjoy it. The open world stuff is inherently fun. Tips:

1. Don't get too carried away with upgrades to weapon capacity. It can kill any challenge.

2. Leave a few outposts untaken if you'd like a few hostile encounters while travelling about.

3. Learn and practise the various takedowns. They are great fun in an excessively violent sort of a way.

4. If you see an area of lily pads, etc in a river or pond go and stand near them and wait.

I'm surprised you feel that way in retrospect. I felt that way as I was playing. "They really need someone who can craft a story because the designers and programmers know their sh*t". And then a tiger jumped on me.

So that April Fool's joke is actually a real thing.

And I'm excited!

The website is f*cking amazing.

I'm lost for words.

Cyberpunktastic!

:cough:

Would it help if I shot the water?

On Master, I throw grenades and Molotovs everywhere. Because you just never know...

Holy crap, it is real!

Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter taking place on a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil. Welcome to an 80’s VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who’s fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world. Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide. Playing Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon doesn't require a copy of Far Cry® 3.

Looks to be XBLA only though.

OMG! The game is worth it for the Official Website alone!

Not according to Eurogamer.

The downloadable PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 spin-off is due to launch on 1st May

Here's a YouTube link of the first 15 minutes (audio is a bit crappy).

My guess is it won't be up for long before Ubi pulls it, but HOLY MOLY! Whoever put this together gets it. They nailed the 80's cheese vibe. The setting, the tone, the writing. Oh man. Bonus props for the incredible soundtrack.

This is Day One material, folks.

Down already. Nuts.
