Moving to Raleigh

Heading down on Tuesday and trying to secure housing. Once that is done, will head back for a weekend of moving the heavy stuff.

Packing this morning. It wasn't until just now that it has all really sunk in. Wife is freaking out a bit.

Woohoo!

Good luck with the move Paleo. Those property prices make me want to leave MD too.

Good luck! I have done a lot of cross-country moves. If you want to drive the truck yourself Penske has the best rates and decent trucks. AAA membership gets you a discount, usually worth it to sign up just for that if you don't already have AAA. I do the packing myself and hire loaders from emove.com to come load and unload the truck on each end, the $2-300 is worth it to me.

Residence Inn by Marriott are a decent place to stay for a week or two while you find an apartment or other longer term rental. They have kitchens so you can cook, live more normally than a usual hotel.

I have moved from expensive to cheap areas and have done like you are, just go to apartments.com and sort by the highest price, the nicest places are still a lot cheaper than the expensive cities. Or rent a house but sometimes that is more hassle.

My brother lives in the area. There's a tiger rehabilitation center nearby, if that's your kind of thing. Just promise to go easy on them.

I am about 90% certain I have settled on a place to live, but need to check it out before deciding. That is one less thing to worry about.

Most of the gear is packed away for the move. I might have to do the sleeping bag thing for a week though as I won't have a truck until the 13th.

Good Luck Paleocon, my girlfriend and I are thinking about moving to that area also.

Best of luck, and godspeed!

okay. Found a place to live. Found a gym. And am seriously thinking of joining www.theproducebox.com so I can get fresh, local produce in the land of jello salads.

Wow, that was quick! That produce site looks pretty cool too. I always think heading over to the farmers market more often would be a good idea but this looks more suited to my lazy lifestyle.

Lucky guy. I lived in Raleigh for 3 years during grad school. I kinda miss it...especially Lilly's Pizza.

Do you play Ultimate Frisbee? They've got a great scene there in the Triangle area.

No, but I do play underwater hockey and they have a pretty good team in Chapel Hill.

We've been Produce Box subscribers for 2 seasons now. It's been great for us. They are good at replacing bad produce and they do events in the area at restaurants that feature food from the farms. They also sell locally made jams, local honey and meat seasonings that is delivered with your box each week.

Great to hear the endorsement. The main question I have is whether or not the box needs to be refrigerated right away and whether my apartment complex has a concierge that will take delivery whilst I am at work. I checked and they don't deliver to my office.

We put a cooler out in the summer time with ice packs and they empty anything that needs to be kept cold.

Embiggened to emphasize tasty, tasty pizza. Loved their topping selection.

Be sure to head over to Durham and watch some of the fine homeless that roam many a parking lot.

Best pizza in the Triangle, especially their bbq chicken pizza.

I am almost afraid to see what the Durham bus station looks like. I will be using it quite a bit to catch the mega back to DC on weekends to be with the wife. I figure I should cab it there from the office so I don't have to leave my car anywhere near Durham.

We moved to Durham last July and it's not bad. Though the Kroger near us does get some awesome homeless folks from time to time. I didn't mean to blow anything out of proportion with my previous post.

The Durham bus station is near the Durham Bulls Stadium and DPAC so it's a pretty decent area.

Oh yeah, there's a Lilly's Pizza in Durham that's kind of close to the bus station so that's a plus.

The gym I am looking at is Triangle Rock Club. It's a climbing gym with a cross training room that is basically just a reasonably equipped free weight room. The rates are reasonable, there is no contract commitment, and I really need to get back into rock climbing anyway.

Anyone out that way have an opinion on it?

If you like to climb, it's a great place with a really good reputation among the folks I know who go there. Like you've said, they don't have anything else outside of the climbing gym and weight room.

The Durham bus station is fine. Unlike many other cities with some bad areas, they've done a decent job of keeping the bus station clear of that nonsense. The main problem Durham has overall is panhandlers who tend to avoid the cops by moving from parking lot to parking lot via bumming rides off of people who should know better. Its easy to tell them apart from people who really need help, as they make up some whopper excuses which fall apart when questioned. (If you do ask a tough question they're likely to walk away as if you never interacted at all.)

Pricey.

There are quite a few CSAs and produce delivery options in the area now. Some, like Papa Spuds, include local fish, poultry, red meat, dairy, etc.

Um, it's like $59/month. Around these parts, you can join a ghetto gym for that. The local rock gym here (about half the size and has no air conditioning or cross training room) runs $90/month.

Oh, and thanks, deft, for the advice on CSA's. I figure I will probably be working long hours and my weekends will be soaked up with travel back to DC for a while, so delivery groceries would go a long way toward freeing up my time to do stuff like stay in shape.

Okay. I scoped out a kitchen table and chairs on Craigslist but I need to pick them up in Durham on Tuesday night and I won't have a vehicle nearly big enough to do the moving (I drive a Cooper S).

Can someone in the NC crew with a larger vehicle lend a hand?

I'm thinking we can use Yellek's van, depending on the time of day.

Yep. I get home around 6:30-6:45. If you need it earlier Stone and I can swap cars for the day. It takes about 30 min to get to Durham depending on where exactly and traffic.

You folks are the best. Looks like around 8pm is when we can work it out.

http://papaspuds.com/ is also good. I know several people who use them.
