Google shutting down Google Reader 7/1/13

Right now Feedly seems to be the main alternative, but I don't like it as much. If the feed isn't in a folder, it's harder to find. Some feeds say "99" but you can only do 30 at a time and then have to refresh the feed. :(

I'm also trying out Feedly; I see what they're trying to do, but I skim over most articles. Usually the title gives me enough info to decide whether to skip the story completely or not. Feedly sent an email focusing on Google Reader refugees. There are some visual tweaks to make Feedly look and feel more like GR.

I guess they'll tweak their design some to make the transition for refugees easier. Procrastination will make July 1st a real challenge for most alternatives.

I'm still hopeful Google will either postpone the July 1st deadline and make the transition to G+ easier and more welcoming.

How do you select a podcast and make it pay out of the list? Every time I touch an entry it either doesn't do anything, changes its status, or tries to download it. I just want to go to a specific feed, select an entry, and make it play. I think that's a fairly simple task, but I can't seem to do it right.

If you don't have it downloaded, a long press will bring up a menu. Hit Stream.

I download everything, though. I generally work from a custom play list, which takes way too many touches to get a single episode into.

Well, I'm currently #31906 in the queue to import into The Old Reader and NewsBlur doesn't seem to be talking new signups right now.

I'm currently using Feedly but I don't really like it -- I miss the minimalism of Reader. Maybe I'll just keep using Reader until someone figures this out.

I installed Tiny Tiny RSS today, and I think I'm really starting to like it. I'll report more as I tinker with it more.

Bad news for iOS folks though, no iOS app, only Android.

Feedly rolled out an update last night across Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

A very nice update that improves the UI and performance, and which is designed, as they say in their blog post, to smooth the transition for Google Reader users. Apparently, a significant update to the iOS app is awaiting Apple approval.

Have to give these guys credit for not only pushing out updates quickly, but being very responsive to the ideas and suggestions of their new users.

I've been trying Tiny Tiny RSS for the last day or so, and I am really digging it. It installs pretty easily and is nice and simple to use. IT might be my go to reader from now on.

That update is pushing Feedly to more like I want it to behave. I'm still getting "end of stream" messages when I know there are tons of messages left in the feed though.

By the way, I'm currently #24861 in the queue for The Old Reader.

They appear to be throttling the number of items in each refresh. I've noticed the number increasing over the past two weeks—from about 30 to now about 50—so perhaps it's a performance issue.

But, you're right. It makes you refresh to get more items even when it lists them as unread.

I've also noticed an issue with some items not staying "marked as read," but that has been decreasing in frequency over the past week.

I'm happy with Feedly. Works for the way I read feeds.

They really seem to be adapting pretty well considering all the new traffic. At this point, they're my reader of choice.

I moved my feeds to feedly as well. It works well enough for what I read (mostly metal blogs) and I'll fire up the google plugin at least once a day while I'm on campus to check it out. For right now, I'm sticking with feedly unless they somehow decide to screw the pooch bad.

Digg is looking into building a Reader-like service as part of their next rebranding attempt. I signed up to keep notified of that, and will report back.

There was one thing I LOVED about reader that made me switch from standalone software such as FeedDemon: Podcasts. None of the automatically syncing applications ever worked without doing frustrating things. Reader matched my mindset perfectly. Play the mp3 right in the browser, or download it. Either way is good.

I like the suggestion of Feedly, and am enjoying the interface. Thank you to everyone who suggested it.

Feedly is what I've transitioned to as well. It took a week to get used to it, but now that I have it works fairly well.

I've been using Feedly for another week and while it's not perfect, it's pretty good. (On a related note, I got an email this weekend saying my stuff has finally been imported into The Old Reader. I don't think I'm even going to bother with it at this point.)

Unfortunately, I'm still getting that "end of stream" thing so no continuous feed as of yet. I think this may require me to use something else for webcomics so now I have to look into that.

One thing I liked about Google Reader was that I could navigate all my feeds in different folders with the keyboard. I could use J/K for next and previous and spacebar to page down and skip to next folder. Seems that neither Feedly nor TheOldReader allow that second part.

I hit J and K all over my PC and wonder why they don't work. Constantly.

NewsBlur offers those keyboard shortcuts (as well as N/P which I used), and seems fairly popular. It is, perhaps, a little too compact in its appearance, though.

J and K work for Feedly.

None of these solutions offers to use space bar to move from folder to folder like Google Reader did.

I went through 200+ items this morning without hitting the "End of Stream" and needing to refresh, so I think this is definitely getting better.

Been using Feedly exclusively for a while now on pc and iOS and I'm really liking it. There definitely needs some improvements, like not opening a new tab to send to a link to Pocket.

I used Feedler Pro on iOS for... ever and I still miss it. Saw on their Twitter feed that the program "won't die" when Reader goes dark. We'll see...

I just want everything to accept vim commands as input.

You are a sick individual who needs helps

In other news. If you're using Chrome here's a browser plugin to make it look like google reader
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...

I have mostly transitioned over to feeldy now. Mostly pretty good. The only thing I really dislike is that the Android and iOS apps both open articles in a browser frame embedded in the app and don't just launch the OS's default browser, which is annoying as long-click and hover actions don't work in the app's browser (as far as I can tell). And there's definitely something wrong with some of the settings behaviours between the desktop, iOS and Android interfaces, I've got them all set to start on the same page with the same article layout but they don't all show the same thing.

Dude. No.

FeedSpot barely ranks on ReplaceReader. It looks nice and compact, but it seems kind of buggy so far.

Oof. I forgot that the July 1st shutdown is looming.

I've been using Feedly exclusively since the announcement and haven't thought much lately that they're still using Google Reader as the backend. Hope their cutover plan goes well.

I have completely converted to Feedly and quite honestly forgotten about Google reader. Feedly is doing everything I want out of an RSS reader and it has a great iOS app.

Those are exactly my sentiments as well. I converted to Feedly and ever since they introduced the "text only" view, I've been very happy with it. It's in my browser, on my table, and on my phone. Definitely a great replacement.

This is a good point. Could all go sour if their project to reimplement google's RSS API is not complete in time.
