Age of Wonders III catch all

Pages

I've probably put more hours into Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic than all of the Civ games combined. Released in 2004 it's maintained a strong following by modders and scenario designers over the years. A couple of days ago on Facebook Triumph Studios posted, "Did you or any of your Facebook friends play our Age of Wonders or Overlord games? Then it's time to Like us, because we will soon unveil our unannounced game here on Facebook!! (...with a minimum of 1000 likes even sooner ;)"

They're just over 1000 likes, but if a few Goodjers want to up the number maybe it'll speed up the announcement. Crossing my fingers that it's AoW 3...

edit: And it is AoW 3. Link!

Ooh, now there's a series that's dying for another sequel! Age of Wonders that is, Overlord never really clicked with me, but if it ended up reviewing well I could see that grabbing my attention as well.

Does Age of Wonders work okay in Windows 7? I loved Master of Magic, but for some reason never got into Age of Wonders. I wouldn't mind giving it another shot sometime.

I'm playing it tonight on Windows 7 in 1920x1080. No problems whatsoever,

Spoiler:

Unless you count goblin Butchers. I hate those round-attack life-stealing little pukes.

I have been playing the first Age of Wonders on 7 with no issue. The interface scales to the number of pixels on the screen, not the resolution. Just like the windows desktop. So the UI is HUUUUUUUUGE, but everything works fine.

Today they posted a 35 second teaser of music from the upcoming game on the FB site. I didn't recognize it from any of their games, but then I turned off the in game music for AoW years ago.

OMGSOEXCITEDYAYOMG

Today they announced AoW 3, with promo video.

These features grabbed me:
A brand-new tactical battle system renders each battlefield and siege in great detail; new rules include flanking and a massive set of special unit abilities.
An epic story campaign with two playable factions; Choose the mighty Commonwealth Empire or join the Court of the High Elves, founded after the reunion of the Dark Elves and Wood Elves.
Compete online in extensive multiplayer modes and scenarios.
High replay value through random maps, difficulty modes and tools allowing user created content
. Squee!

Well the 3 seconds of in game teaser looked nice

I look forward to it and hope it's on steam. I would play the old ones, but I can't find the discs I bought 10+ years ago.

Trying to contain my excitement, because I so don't want to be let down.

I'm at work but I hope it is still turn based combat? Anyway could be awesomsauce!

Looking forward to this. I loved the magic system in this game. But I hope they streamline the combat just a bit. One of the reasons I could never get too deep into AoW was sometimes the battles would take forever.

Holy moley, this is the best news I've heard all week!

The original was always too tough for me but damn was it fun. Can't wait for this.

Thats why gog.com is such a good friend.

Eurogamer has more info too.

Our good friend Notch is funding Age of Wonders III. It's good to know the $100 or so I've spent on Minecraft accounts and clothing is being well invested

It looks like the battle map is still a hex grid. So... I guess that doesn't mean anything but I really hope it's turn based too.

edit- actually the Eurogamer article says this:

In Age of Wonders 3, battles are turn-based. There's a simultaneous turn-based mechanic which means you don't wait to make moves and the battle is sped up as a result.

I don't know how I feel about simultaneous turns for a single-player game. I still feel rushed. Hopefully you can do real turn-based single-player.

Thxs for the info. I actually forgot to watch he vid myself. I'll prob give it a go and hope for the best.

The simultaneus turns thing is a little confusing. Wouldn't that mean the side that moves last gets an advantage because they can counter whatever the other side does? I've been playing AoW 1 and things get a little weird like that. Say you have an army sitting beside another army, if you click first and move that army out of reach the other player can't engage it with his. But if he moves first his troops engage yours and a fight happens.

I much prefer being able to plan things down to the smallest detail.

Didn't Age of Wonders II have a simultaneous turns option? I never used it though, does anyone know how it functioned in that game?

All the AOW games had simultaneous turn options. That was the only way to play PBEM games. Think how long games would be if you had to email every time you move one unit. You could do turn based play in single player and live multiplayer. You could also switch to simultaneous play if you thought you were going to crush the computer in your attack.

Wait a minute, is that how it worked. hmmm its been awhile so I could be making stuff up.

I think you're confusing it with auto-resolve battles. But yes, I believe AoW PBEM had simultaneous turns, so that you could all submit turns to a server, and then you would all get a new turn file back. I think it also had regular sequential turns, where you would always get email from the same person, and send your completed turn to the same next person. Of course, it has been a while, so it's possible I'm confusing this with PBEM Civ/Stars/PG, etc.

Also, if you can believe it, AoW:SM is ten years old! I'm definitely looking forward to revisiting the AoW franchise with a new installment.

Sure does look purdy. And pretty polished visually for a pre-alpha, I guess.

I really liked that pull-back to reveal a cloth map effect. Very cool.

Warlock: Master of the Arcane should hold you over until then.

Or just some more AoW: Shadow Magic.

This looks great. Looks like a day one purchase for me.

Yeah everything I'm seeing there looks really faithful to the series (which makes sense, it's still the same people making it). I hope they still have the cool sieges from the earlier games, I always really loved those!

I would but I'd miss the strategic battles. Some good siege battles lasted 20 minutes or so

Interesting cannon and flamethrower stuff.
