NFL 2012-2013 Post-Super Bowl Offseason Thread

Eric Winston is still on the market. I still don't see a good reason for the Chiefs to have released him. I'm afraid it really was because he ripped the fans. But that is a really dumb reason to get rid of him.

I'm aware of all of that, but I'd like them to retain someone otherwise they'll end up like the Patriots, good or great on offense but never good enough as a team.

Break out your RGIII Jersey??

As I was typing that out I knew something like that would've happened.

Via the BS report I think Bill Barnwell said Jake Long's medical was very very long.... like 16 hours or something ridiculous. So maybe not the end of the world.

Maybe the plan wasn't exactly to clean house this quickly but you cant just overpay for Kruger/Eberle out of spite.

Still bunch of guys out there so theres still hope. Kinda what i'm hoping for with the Packers.

Problem now is its musical chairs. Keep waiting and let the prices fall or get stuck when the market is finally empty.

Reed falls into the category of the type of guys that are left. Great vet who.... might be done at any second.

Way things are going you could have Reed for 4m or maybe Woodson for the veteran min. Winfield is still out there also.

Report: Dumervil unimpressed by Broncos' offer, will visit other teams

Haha, no. No rooting for Shanny to kill his players. I'm from Baltimore and will continue to root for the Ravens and O's.

The good news is that when Ravens defensive players leave Baltimore, they go nowhere.

edit: Plus, after all these years, I think that the Wizard of Oz has earned your trust and respect. His ability to find potential defensive pro bowlers with low 5th rounders has learned men speculating if he is an illicit time traveller whose only mistake is not securing US Patent #1.

Keep Calm and Wear Purple.

Ozzie hasn't been quite as stellar as of late. I think they haven't been aggressive enough high in the draft, but they continue to be great about finding depth.

And when it is about the *system*, depth is the primary critical factor.

So...should I be happy that Ed Reed and his old (slightly younger than mine) body is coming to Houston?

I mean, I know he's good. Be he's getting up there for the NFL. My body is starting to get slightly creaky in my mid-30s, not that I was ever anywhere near the real of Ed Reed's body in the first place.

I dunno maybe if your lucky he has one more good year in him, but after being a Titans fan for so long and seeing them go after washed up veterans who used to be awesome...it hardly ever works out for the good when they change teams that late in their career.

It's, unfortunately, a one way street. Players go from Houston to Baltimore to be great and Baltimore to Houston to cash out.

Sorry.

Ted Ginn has joined the Panthers.

I'm going to try very hard to not make a "years of WR problems are finally resolved" joke.

DAMMIT FAILED AGAIN.

If the Ravens snag Dummervil for reasonable money it could still work out well for them. Suggs, Dummervil after the QB and Ngata plugging the middle? If they stay healthy thats a good start. Might be a big if.

Apparently Dumervil to Ravens is happening.

Move Upshaw inside and I'm feeling much better about the defense. My understanding is Upshaw is too slow to be a true edge rusher.

Someone just sent me a picture of Ozzie with the caption "Calm the f*** down. I said I got this.".

After watching Nakamura whiff at a few passes thrown over his head this past year, I can't disagree with that.

Don't worry, MMD! You'll still have many, many years to work on resisting temptation!

Overlooked in all of this are the moves Baltimore made to acquire a pair of worthwhile 3-4 defensive ends: Chris Canty and Marcus Spears.

Last year, Ngata got moved to the outside more than the team would have preferred. They didn't have a replacement for Cory Redding. Kruger was playing that role until the team wisely made him stand up and play OLB instead. Terrance Cody couldn't play outside, only inside, so Ngata moved outside to allow Cody to play the nose.

Now, with Canty and Spears, they have two players who can play the 3-4 end, both of who I'd expect to take the starting jobs and work guys like Arthur Jones back into a rotational spot. That will allow the team to move Ngata back inside, which, according to Harbaugh, is the plan. (They'll still move him around, but only for their matchup purposes, not because of a lack of sufficient personnel).

And with the outside linebacker positions pretty nailed down, Courtney Upshaw is going to have to show something to make a spot for himself. He's a bit heavy for an inside linebacker, and a bit small to play 3-4 DE (not that he's likely to get time in that now-crowded position anyway). His most likely contribution seems to be as a reserve OLB, spelling Dumervil and/or Suggs.

I expect the Ravens to draft an inside linebacker somewhere in the first 3 rounds of the draft.

Kinda got excited this morning thinking about how our safeties are now Manning and Reed. Not sure if that's the most important position to be elite at, but it's got to be good. I certainly trust Wade to get the most out of his guys.

I also heard an interesting tidbit on NFL network that the Ravens signed Spears, Dumervil, and Canty for the same price as the Browns paid for Kruger. That's some slick GMing right there.

Michael Huff to Ravens on a three year worth $6mil.

Ozzie, why do we ever doubt you?

Yup, smart move. The guy can play any position in the secondary, which is key.

Also, the Falcons finally inked a deal with Osi Umenyiora. The Falcons could really use some pass rush help, so that's good on them.

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are getting closer to a long-term contract extension that would make the star quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history, according to league sources.

Both Rodgers and the Packers are hesitant to comment on a potential extension, but league-wide speculation is that the deal could average $25 million per year.

100% worth it but at the same time interesting thing happening in the NFL with all the young guys getting it done on cheap deals.

Rodgers is worth what he gets but at the same time in a salary cap situation it hamstrings your team to compete to a certain extent.

In the draft we trust because between locking up Rodgers long term and leaving money for a future Mathews deal theres not going to be much left. Maybe a vet or two on veteran rental prices.

Romo is getting more guaranteed money than Flacco. Aaron Rodgers is probably the happiest man alive right now.

When I see contracts like that it tells me the guy wants to get money more than he wants to win. Which is ok, just hope he remembers it when his team gets 8 or 10 wins every year and goes out in the 1st or 2nd round.

Nothing a out Romo strikes me as someone who is a great competitor.

Raiders trade for Matt Flynn.

EDIT: Correction, deal not closed yet.

That's two teams in the top 3 who opted to trade for other teams' backup QBs rather than draft Geno Smith, and the third will very likely opt to stick with Blaine Gabbert rather than doing so themselves.

He's a good fantasy QB, that's about it.

Tell that to my fantasy team from last year.

The Bills have traded for Kevin Kolb.

That's now 3 teams (once the Flynn deal is finalized) in the top 10 who have opted to sign free agents rather than pursue drafting Geno Smith.

I have to say that I'm not really high on Smith. Most mocks have the Jaguars reaching for him at #2, but I think that's typical nobody-actually-pays-attention-to-the-Jaguars lazy reporting. I can absolutely see the team adding a QB in the draft, but I don't see it being Smith with the #2 overall pick. And I hope I'm right, because I don't see Smith as a franchise QB.

More QB movement. Raiders trade for Flynn finalized, plus the team guaranteed his 2013 salary.

Raiders then send Carson Palmer to the Cardinals.
