You betray your heritage at your peril.

Serious comment: Why make it game-related? If you already are so nervous about picking the right thing, and he already tends to just buy what he likes, maybe you are approaching this from the wrong angle. Especially since this is an "anniversary" gift, and not a "birthday" or "Christmas" one, maybe make it something you know he likes that the two of you could appreciate together, but not something he would usually take the chance on.

I know when I'm in a relationship, the gifts I give (and like to recieve) aren't something that fits neatly into the same type of hobby support that you always get as gifts because people know you as the "gamer" or something (and run the risk of getting something that isn't quite what you wanted). The message is that you are happy to have spent 5 years with him, and buying a bunch of Steam games or a new keyboard doesn't express that message.

Sidenote - Fellatio meets all of this criteria.

You know, all this talk about fellatio to a female non-gamer coffee grinder might be making her uncomfortable. Seriously. Tone it down.

My wife always has the best intentions when it comes to giving gifts and things I'm interested in but she knows not to buy anything gaming related without asking me first. Does it ruin the surprise? Yup! But I'd rather give her ideas about what I want rather than her trying to pick. It's not that I don't trust her but I just don't know that she'd have any idea what to pick. I can imagine it would be as frustrating to her to pick a gaming related item than it would be for me to have to buy her clothes or shoes.

Yeah, I keep an Amazon Wishlist going for the same reason. If she wants to buy me something, my wife knows to look at the wishlist.

ditto

Necessary survival items? A 10-year-dip into a world torn apart by war, zombies and hunger. After 10 years pull him out, dust him off and voila - he has all the steely-eyed glint and amorality he could ever want from a survival pack.

Gaming Headphones?

Surround sound setup for computer or TV?

New Gaming Chair (note: possibly very personal thing that might need input from him).

New Case Mod for your console of choice or PC? (would require one of you to install / assemble it, but something you can each look at each time you play and think about the wonderful gift)

Couples Cooking class (good for food geeks)

Along those same lines, Cooking science stuff is popular now. Molecular Gastronomy I think it's called.

Have you thought about flowers? Some boys love to get some of the same frills and things traditionally reserved for girls, but are non-conventional for boys.

I'm curious to know what his other interests are, because games tend to be a pretty personal thing, and with the advent of Steam, it's really easy to get your hands on everything that you're dying to play.

If, however, you're dead-set on this being game-related, I'd look into getting him one of these:

http://hyperkin.com/retro-gaming/ret...

with a couple of classic game cartridges. Toronto is a pretty big city, so I expect there's a store somewhere that sells old NES, SNES, and Genesis carts. Maybe he never had a those systems when he was younger. You could play together.

Here's some ideas for games to hunt down in no particular order:
Mega Man 2 (NES)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 or 3 (NES)
TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Retro City Ransom (NES)
Bubble Bobble (NES)
Secret of Mana (SNES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 or 3 & Knuckles (Genesis)
Toejam and Earl (Genesis)

Prices vary with popularity and availability. There are a lot of different classic games out there that I as a long-time lover of games would appreciate having physical copies of.

I would also recommend a link to our website for him to join unless you're trying to do this anonymously on his favorite gaming website. We're good fun and have plenty to say about just about every video game under the sun!

You betray your heritage at your peril.

I take it that you proudly affirm your heritage by sticking to Daewoo?

You know, all this talk about fellatio to a female non-gamer coffee grinder might be making her uncomfortable. Seriously. Tone it down.

With that I agree. Also, I think that Kuddles believes that receiving a fellatio is such a rare "gift", it only happens on some special occasions like anniversaries.

Holy: speaking of practical gifts. Gamer or not, your boyfriend will sure appreciate a set of quality headphones or a headset. We have a thread the discussion of such goods over here. Again, knowing the budget is key.

It is VERY Korean to eschew Korean products.

Sorry, Grimlock (naturally).

Good.

The Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Chef Knife is probably my favorite knife that I own. I enjoy it so much, I bought a second one.

Well, I came in here to be helpful, but now I have the lust. Damn you, KrazyTaco and your lustful habits!

What was the question again? Oh yeah, survival kits. Do you like to cook? Cause whipping up snacks that can be frozen, and then pulled out and quickly toasted into yummy-state...who doesn't love that? You can make things like bread-shots that are stuffed with cheese, you parbake them, then freeze them. When ready to eat, they get popped in the oven for ten minutes and you have fresh homemade hot bread and goodies. Name them something clever related to his game of choice. Ooooh, puff pastry filled with stuff is another good one that freezes and bakes really wall. Candied or spiced nuts, in a jar decorated to look like a potion of endurance (make it game appropriate to his game of choice), do the same thing with a potion of life or energy or whatever, and make a batch of instant mocha espresso or some other energy drink of choice.

My personal favorite snack to tuck into survival kits: chocolate covered deep fried bacon. You're welcome. No really. Make it for him. Trust me on this one. (Unless he keeps kosher or halal, in which case, don't do that. That would be bad.)

All lovingly tucked atop an inflated hemorrhoid cushion...because dude, that is funny right there, I tell you what.

Edit to say: I'll be happy to share recipes if you need them.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. I do like your survival kit thing, I think you're definitely on the right track there.

Does he play Minecraft?

More Gaming Stuff

Hello everyone!

Thank you for the awesome ideas and the great suggestions. Let me clarify a little what my parameters are for this gift idea:

Budget: $200 approximatly

Explanation of "survival kit": currently, my boyfriend and I are transitioning from being students (who could game as much as we like) to full time work life. Needless to say, gaming has taken a hit, time wise.

The idea of a " survival kit" came to me as a way of keeping gaming in his everyday life without having to be actually playing. So I'm looking for things that have function in everyday use but can be a reminder of games/gaming.

As for gaming with him, it's one of our favourite things to do together. Im still a newbie, but it's fun non the less.

Also *looks over both shoulders* he is a member of this community, so I highly trust your suggestions when it comes to things beyond what I could guess/get out of him directly.

Hope this helps explain what I'm looking for and thanks again for all the suggestions!

Ps. Chocolate and bacon sounds great in and of itself... I would totally like that recipe please!

Ahhh!!!! I pressed enter instead of preview... Real post now a couple responses below.

If you like to game together, have you considered a trip out to Playdium? Something to look into for a night of arcade fun, although I haven't personally been out there since somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2000 or so.

Ooh! Ooh! I'm one! Not the one in question, but I'm still one!

First thing is to get him a portable gaming system if he doesn't have one already.

Trinkets cone second. A nice pen with a subtle game motif would be my preferred thing.

I would say spread it, and get a whole pile of little loot trinkets.

Keyrings, desk ornaments, bobble heads, mobile phone holders that all tie back to the games you enjoy/share.

I have a ? block keyring on my house keys the kids got me for Father's Day one year. Really inexpensive, but it brings a smile to face everytime I bring my keys out of my pocket. I'm sure you could sopend well getting similar loot form ThinkGeek, or even Gamestop.

Good call, I keep forgetting there are places in the world that have those sub $200.

Everyone needs a pair of keyboard pants.

if he's at all interested in retro gaming then I highly suggest the "Bookazines" or "Gamer DVD's (proprietary eformat of approx 30 issues)"

can be found here:
https://www.imagineshop.co.uk/retrogamer/

One could get lost for hours if not days reading all the minutia. If you find the UK postage fees expensive, you can also consider the ITunes version. They have smaller packs.

If you're interested in inexpensive baubles then maybe:

But honestly, you can't beat kuddles' suggestion.

Is it too late to be very obvious and say bl*wjobs?

Seriously people?

I don't know about too late, but it is a pretty classless way to alienate a female coffeegrinder and ensure that she won't stick around.

But whatever.
