Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U & 3DS) Catch-All

Did anyone post this yet? The folks at 8-4 Play podcast did an episode entirely on Monster Hunter. It's back from 2010 so it's a bit out of date but might be interesting.

Time – Topic Discussed:
7:18 – Monster Hunter 101
18:50 – Monster Hunter Fever in Japan
34:46 – Online Play with Monster Hunter
41:18 – History of Monster Hunter
48:38 – The “Claw” Technique
51:14 – Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
1:06:34 – Listener Feedback
1:44:43 – Closing Comments!

+1

It's an awesome episode of 8-4. I listened to it when it originally came out, and it really inspired/pushed/motivated me to get super into the Monster Hunter game.

Went online for the first time last night. Decided to stay with the long sword for now. I can see how it could cause issues if people are not careful in how they activate the spirit combo. But that would be an issue for other weapons as well. It's really about planning when to activate the spirit combo instead of just spamming the button because the meter filled up. The group I was in had more problems being hit by the bow user than any of the melee guys stepping on each others toes.

I'm so jealous of anyone who is playing this while I am waiting to move into a new house. I hope there's some folks around to hunt with next week whenever I get the TV and internet set up.

you're absolutely right, everyone has to be mindful of others no matter which weapon you use. Glad that you're getting into it!

don't worry, we'll be around. I'm pretty sure someone will be willing and available to hunt together with you...

I find it strange that I have to log into a "world" and then into a lobby before I can see the friends list or search for a room that will then move me to another lobby/world.

Even with these weird interface design choices, I'm still having fun and will likely continue playing for a while. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding someone to hunt with.

Anyone up for some HR1 quests tonight?

Okay, so question regarding the online play: How do I figure out what world ya'll are on? Should I just try to message someone directly, or was there a menu that I missed?

We have to keep hunting, or else how will we make it to G-rank?

there's a way to bring up your friends list and see whether they are online or not. Once you enter Network Mode, then as lancejt said, join a lobby. Once in, you should be able to pull it up, and warp directly to whatever city they happen to be in.

sure, what time?

Whewwww.....Man, I can't believe I skimmed right over that part. Derp! Okay, I'll see about popping on after work and checking that out

I'll play tonight. Time?

And does the friend list autopopulate from the system level list? You'd hope so, but Capcom+Nintendo....

The friends list does in fact populate from the system level.

Time: I dunno. I'll be putting the kiddo to bed somewhere around 8-8:30 CDT. So anytime after then should be good.

I'll have to see if there's a separate list for just MH. While I'm glad it does the legwork, I'm afraid my FL will fill up if I play like I did in Tri.

I'm giving the series another try. What is a good newbie weapon to start with?

I would say sword and shield. The ability to use items without having the sheathe first is a big plus.

I'll be around tonight to kill things.

But will you be playing Monster Hunter? Otherwise, that just sounds like Thursday night.

I don't know if I'm going to be up for multiplayer tonight. I need to murder the Great Wroggi a few more times to upgrade my junk.

It looks like my download finally finished and is installing. I've had to try twice and things take forever to download on the Wii U. I should have just purchased the physical disc. I'll be around tonight to play.

EDIT: I cursed myself by thinking it worked. Stall at 00:02 remaining. Stupid Nintendo!

I won't be able to play tonight. I'm having to redownload and install the game. I hope it works this time.

Oh, argh, that must be so frustrating. Hope it works for you!

I would say Hammer, but I always say Hammer.

It's fast to move around, you must focus on attacking and dodging, there is no shield to rely on, it forces you to improve your positioning and movement abilities. Lots of chances to stun the monsters by hitting them in the head. Ground pound, super pound, very satisfying. Only limitation might be reach, hammers tend to be short. Oh, and no cutting ability. So you'll have to play with others if you want tail cuts / carves.

Should be good for me too. I've got until about 10pm CDT when I'll have to go play with some people from the teamwork cast site. I bought my first set of armour from the Port, the Yukumo set. Marginally better than Leather, but at least I have a nice hat!

Since it wasn't super clear to me as a Tri vet, I wanted to point out that you get to the online section by talking to the cat at the bottom left of the village, heading to the port, and then selecting Network Mode or whatever they call it. You don't pick city or village at the main menu like last time.

I picked this up on 3ds even with no online mode. The call to kill the barroth over and over again was too strong. Too strong!

I finally got it downloaded, installed, and working. This is my first Monster Hunter so I'm excited to play it. I'm actually now have the conundrum of having too many games on the Wii U that I want to play: Monster Hunter, Lego City, Need for Speed Underground, and Punch Out!.

+5 Poison talisman plus +2 Poison decoration plus +4 Poison Wroggi Boots means you can't poison me anymore, Great Wroggi! Time to upgrade from this Jaggi suit.

Wonder if it'll stand up to Gigginox, too. Hmm...

Took out my first Qurupeco, but it was closer than I'd like. Blocking those fire attacks takes off a ton of stamina.

Slowly working towards a Qurupeco armor set, but my hunting horn keeps bouncing off nearly every part of it. Well, probably not every part, but man... brutal. I think I need to switch up to something sharper for this.
