Gamer Boyfriends: I need gift suggestions, please!

Pages

Howdy,

So I am approaching the fifth anniversary with my awesome gamer boyfriend, and I want to get him a gift for our occasion.

Normally, I would just ask him directly, but this being what I would define a special landmark for us and he usually already has everything he needs game wise/gets himself what he wants... PLUS (you guessed it) he'll always say that he's "Really difficult to get things for..." so I'm kinda stumped.

Here is my idea... I want to create a "gamer boyfriend" survival pack . This should be a box compiled with items related to gaming or can be humorous to help any gamer survive through crazy non-gaming life.

The only item I have already have for this gift is a Day[9] t-shirt, cause it's something we both watch together and the dude is just too friggen funny to not want to learn from.

Think you have got a cool gift idea for me? Please share.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

What kind of games does he like?

I was exactly this sort of person before I broke up with my girlfriend, right down to the "I'm hard to buy things for." bit, especially once I got a job and could easily pay for everything I wanted. People really struggle to find me good presents, but she was really good at finding quirky, unique and functional things I never even considered, she seemed to have a knack for it.

One thing I appreciated was that she got me non-geeky stuff. For instance, she got me a Redwing's Jersey for our first Christmas, which was perfect! She also got me a Kobo e-reader last Christmas, which is still sort of geeky, but also very functional.

Honestly, sometimes we geeky sorts can get a bit sick of the geeky presents from well meaning family and friends, unless they really know what we like. I mean, yeah, I like Star Wars, but do I really need Star Wars mugs aged 27? Not really, some people might, but I feel like I don't need to broadcast my undying tolerance for Star Wars on my crockery... but to most muggles geeky = loves Star Wars on ALL THE THINGS.

You sound like you're mostly avoiding the tacky stuff like that though, so good work. Honestly, shirts are great, I've never been unhappy with a geeky shirt.

Have you considered a mechanical keyboard? They have a...romantic effect on certain gamer/podcasters.

I'd say.. game with him? You would not *believe* the brownie points to be earned that involve playing games with a significant other out of love for gaming, and not tolerance of a hobby. You can buy a big basket of this or that, but snuggling up and playing something together will yield fruit of an entirely different variety. Solve puzzles together! Try to figure out that story together! Discuss the motivations of that character together! Try to beat that tough platforming section together! Wear a bikini for added benefit!

Unless he's primarily an online shooter/MMO gamer... then I have no idea and disregard whatever I said.

Gamer isn't really all that specific of a description these days. I think we need more to go on.

Something that gamers sometimes don't buy but should: accessories.
-A cool rack/box/case for storing games.
-Controller charging stations. (added bonus: tidies up the place)
-Quality headsets.
-Cases for handhelds
-New unique controller if he could use one

Then there's gaming related stuff like prints, artbooks, soundtracks, guides, figurines, apparels, accessories like wallets or belt-buckles, etc. depending on what kind of guy he is. I know if my girlfriend got me a pac-man wallet for example I'd love it but some other gamers wouldn't

Survival pack?

The things that comes to mind:-

1) Power bank with multiple heads for charging of all his gizmos;
2) USB docking station for him to plug in all his gizmos at one time;
3) Portable hard drive;
4) Portable DVD player;

Basically anything relating to tech and gaming that are small and portable.

If you feel he can be trusted with sharp implements, gamers love quality cutlery.

Take some time to browse the various categories on Think Geek and I'm sure you'll find at least a few things that he'd like.

Hell, I'm slowly decorating my home with bits and pieces from my Think Geek wishlist. I just got Pac-Man shot glasses, Stargate coasters, a Mega Man air freshener for my car, everyone still makes a big deal out of my Aperture Science shower curtain, etc. etc.

It is also where I got my friend and his wife scented oils and make-up, which they both loved.

So yeah, Think Geek.

The Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Chef Knife is probably my favorite knife that I own. I enjoy it so much, I bought a second one.

I think most gamers with jobs have need for a good bag. May I suggest the Bag of Holding?

Bag of Holding - ThinkGeek

However, in general for gamer gifts I recommend surfing the digital shelves at the Think Geek website. They are the best resource for all things geek from Dr. Who to Zombie Apocalypse.

That's certainly a good one. The rocker on it is a little more aggressive than on the Henckels, so depending on your style of chop, it is either awesome or meh. I, personally, think the former.

I have the Henckels too and it's a fact that the Wusthof is 100x better.

You could buy some Steam dollars and drop them into a really cheap Ikea frame, or similar. Mark it "incase of Summer Sale, break glass". Bonus points if the frame is actually red, and resembles the "incase of emergency" ones.

Of course, this would be sooooo much better

Hmm. Not that I disagree, but you will find that among cutlery afficianados, this is largely a religious argument. One thing I like about the Henckels is that the shallower sweep of the blade makes it easier to insert in between someone's ribs.

edit: though, honestly, for that sort of thing, nothing beats a quality carbon steel yanagiba.

Fangamer is another good option.

Threadless is also a good online store if he likes to wear his geek.

$10 sale this week too, with some free shipping options thrown in.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Holy: what kind of budget do you have in mind?

Wet wipes are indispensable for cleaning up clammy joysticks.

Nice question... I smell Titanium, or other exotic materials in this thread's near future.

While he's gaming.

But ThinkGeek is also a good suggestion. Or...if he has a geek shelf in his work or home office, we always appreciate more crap to fill it. Or old, nostalgic toys from his childhood. I loved it when my wife gave me an original Transformers Dinobot for the above-mentioned geek shelf.

Indeed.

I just bought myself one of these and I can say I'm very much in love with it.

Which one?

Sorry, Grimlock (naturally).

My wife has gotten me two wonderful gaming related gifts - the first was a left-handed Naga, which quite frankly has changed how well I can play fast-paced games like Tribes or RTSes. The second was a new pair of Steel Series gamer headphones. They're about $100 but so comfy and have a high quality of sound. Granted, these things are good if your boyfriend plays PC.

You can also ask him if what his Steam profile is and see if he has a wishlist.
