The Banner Saga: Factions

The turn-based multiplayer combat component was released as a free standalone game, called The Banner Saga: Factions, prior to the release of the full game. It became available to backers on 18 February 2013 and will be available to the public on 25 February. Factions allow players to pit teams of six combatants, chosen from 16 classes, against each other.

I didn't participate in the kickstarter for the full game but I figured I'd give this a shot when I saw it on steam. So far the art is excellent as expected, but the tactical gameplay is what's really grabbed me. It's completely sold me on getting the story portion on release. I've only played 10 or so games so I don't know how long it will hold my attention but every game I learn something new that I can apply in my next game. So far the match making seems decent. There's been some lag but nothing game breaking. There's an in game store where you can buy skins or upgraded characters but I haven't felt held back by not using it.

So if that sounds like your kind of thing try it out! And if anyone wants to play a friend game hit me up. I'm also more than happy to answer any questions.

I just try it out and I was impress. It feels a bit shallow at first but I would imagine depth is added later as you upgrade your units with different abilities. I'm just glad to see a free to play turn base game.

I really should check this out since I backed Banner Saga.

Ever since I played Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1 I've been waiting for this: multi-player for a TRPG.

Now that I have it, I can kind of see why it doesn't come up too often. The combat feels kind of slow. I think with better and more interesting units it will become more fun, though. You can buy prestige and a few classes, but otherwise things unlock with gameplay.

The game looks amazing. I'll have to look up the credits because it looks like watching a Viking version of Metalocalypse.

Same. I even downloaded it on Steam, but have yet to play more than 2 minutes. Granted, I'm mainly interested in the single-player campaign, but the MP keeps popping up in my brain as something I really need to dig into.

Giant Bomb has a Quick Look up.

Not interested in the multiplayer aspect but as an advertisement for what battle will be like in the single player game I'm sold (I didn't support the kickstarter). There aren't too many new tactical games that come out on the PC like this, they've seemed to be confined to the handhelds and PS3. Plus, you know, vikings.

I have played I guess around 10 matches of this. And.. well... the battle system is beginning to feel more like Arithmetic Lord hehe. The cartoon graphics that I thought at first were a great representation of that style of animation are sorta.. making it feel more and more like im on Sesame Street. Just waiting for the Count to come out and commentate the rather heavy arithmetic based combat. Why this gives me sort of a turned off and creepy feeling is something I dunno.
