JRPG Catch-All

When will we see JRPGs without spiky hair?

I assume you mean JRPGs that have male characters in them... unlike Hyperdimension Neptunia.

Even the guy-look-a-like in the suit is a girl?

Oh right, if she was a guy, the hair would be spiky.

Bangs are kind of a big deal in Japan. Like Godzilla.

So, Drakengard 3 is in development for the PS3. No idea who is working on it or when it'll be released or if it'll be released in North America. Hopefully at the very least the cavia folks at Marvelous AQL are getting to work on it.

Huh!? No that's out of the blue. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it, though, especially after having played NIER.

Yeah, I wonder how much of the Cavia team will be on that. It's certainly a bit out of left field.

Looks like it'll have the same director, character designer, composer, and producer.

Sweeeeeet.

The composer/director relationship is one that needs to be emulated much more in modern video games. It has more of a film give-and-take to it.

Often, elements of the game were modified to match the music, rather than the other way around. [emphasis mine] Some tracks were used in ways that the composers did not envision, such as "Grandma", which was expected to be used in the prologue of the game but was instead chosen as a boss battle theme. The music was designed for different motifs to appear in various arrangements throughout the soundtrack, and also to convey a sense of sadness even during the "thrilling" tracks. Okabe was allowed a great deal of freedom regarding what the music was to sound like; game director Taro Yooko's main request was that he use a lot of vocal works.

Alert! Alert! Nier reference from Minarchist! Alert! Alert!

:P

Hey now, at least it's not Persona.

Hey, at least it's not a Catherine reference!

Did someone mention Darksiders?

Seriously, I was just giving Min a hard time as he didn't mention what game that quote was about. The link clearly showed that, but I'm not on a first name basis, as it were, with the designers behind Nier.

I didn't mention the game because it didn't matter. What did matter is that the director and composer were the same on the project from which the quote is pulled as on the new Drakengard project.

So nyeah.

Yeah, that KS campaign was a major flop. $400,000 or something, right? And didn't get anywhere close to that.

Class of Heroes 2 is coming out for the PSP/Vita on the 26th of this month. If you remember, this was the game that had the Kickstarter for a fancy edition that ended up not getting funded. It's one of those dungeon crawler JRPGs a la the Etrian Odyssey series or Unchained Blades, but this one has a cutesy high school theme.

I heard mostly bad things about Class of Heroes.

Where's my new Dragon Quest game?!

Yeah, but there were people who ended up really liking it. Something about the enemy design or something. I can't remember as it was entirely too long ago.

Browsing reviews on Metacritic, it looks like people who like old school dungeon crawlers enjoyed it for its charm, monster designs, and level designs, while people who don't like old school dungeon crawlers didn't like it for being grindy, unforgiving, and lacking in graphical flash. So, not an entry in the genre that will change anyone's mind, but one that might satisfy fans.

That seems a fair assessment of the game. There are enough entries in that genre I don't really feel a lot of desire to play a middling one though.

And of course CGR covered it:

Yeah I wasn't impressed with CoH.

Looks like there's going to either be a port, or a new Neptunia game coming to the Vita in Japan for a June release date:

Interesting...

There's also "Hyperdimension Idol Neptunia PP" which is, by all accounts, going to be an idol simulation game, like Id@lmaster, but with the Neptunia crew.

I'd love to play it myself. I'm a sucker for the characters and for that kind of genre... but I'm not going to invest in a Vista just for a game or two.

Looks like it's going to be both the Idol game and a remake of the first Neptunia game:

If they remade the first Neptunia with the improvements they have made in the second two, it would be worth picking up (if I had a Vista that is). Wonder if they are adding the CPU candidates in... mk2 (and possibly the upcoming anime) assume they were there all along, even though they were never mentioned or seen in the first game.

Also, is there anything in that link but ads? I open it in IE and all I get are ads. I open in Chrome with my ad blocker and all I get is a black page. :p

Chrome + Adblocker is working nicely on my side, then

Here's the text:

It seems that the Hyperdimension Neptunia series is doing extremely well in Japan. So well in fact that not only is Compile Heart working on Hyperdimension Idol Neptunia PP, an idol type of game for the Vita, but it has just been revealed at the Dengeki Game Festival that was held in Akihabara today that two more Vita titles are being worked on.

The first game revealed is actually a game that seems to star Noir, the PS3 type character, as the main character and it is called Chou Megami Shinkou Noel Gekishin Black Heart which I will not try to translate at the moment and a game called Chou Ji Jigen Game Neptune Re; Birth 1 which is a bit easier to translate into Hyperdimension Neptunia Re; Birth 1. While no details were revealed for Re; Birth 1, “Neptune, Restart” was shown after the game’s reveal so it could be a Vita port of the first Neptunia title.

It is interesting to note that a gameplay video and opening video for Idol Neptunia PP was also shown off, but Dengeki did not state what was revealed.
